Does Buddy have a chance to be POY if he comes back? If he puts on another ten pounds of muscle and can improve his handles it could make a few million dollars per year difference in his contract. I'm sure of one thing, if Buddy does come back, OU will be considered a top eight team.

National? Almost no chance. Conference, he might win this year. He's probably the front runner.

Care to elaborate?

My opinion is personally he is just not that good. Not this year, and likely not next year. And OU as a team probably wouldn't do anything to help his cause.

Hes not but I think the ceiling is pretty high with his abilities. If he's in the right situation he has a chance to have a long pro career in the NBA but how many guys have we seen in college ball which you could say that about? Time will tell if he ever makes it. His game has a lot of holes in it right now but his hustle makes up for a lot of those.

To add to this...if you gave Hollis Price his size he would have played in the NBA. Corey Brewer was roughly the same size and I think he was a better player than Hield in college yet he never played in the NBA. The strike was bad timing for Corey though.

Brewer wasn't very tall either. Listed at 6'1 and 6'2, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was right about 6'0 even.

Kaminsky Wisconsin and Okafor Duke. Is that enough???

Yea but we're talking next year not this. If Buddy can put up a stat line along these lines 19ppg 6 boards on 35-40% from 3 and 45% or so from inside the arc along with a steal or two a game (very possible) and OU has a strong season which is likely then how would he not be in the conversation for NPOY?

If Buddy finishes strong then he should go after just watching Justise Winslow play against North Carolina and the fact that he is considered a lottery pick makes me wonder about NBA scouts these days. Does anyone here think Kelly Oubre is better than Buddy? Oh wait he has potential and more upside sure. The NBA scouts evaluating talent these days are ruining the game by picking young talent who for the most part can't even dominate college basketball except a rare few eg Jahil Okafor.

Right now...probably not.

But you take an 18yo Oubre over Buddy every day of the week if you're an NBA team. Buddy will be relatively the same player next year he is this year, he doesn't have a body to grow into, there was no recent growth spurt that has effected his game. He is a good scorer that has holes in his game. Only way he ever sticks in the NBA is if he becomes really really really good at shooting the ball. Otherwise, he is a dime a dozen in the professional basketball world.

Because 21-23 year old kids have tapped their potential? I never understand this stance. Buddy has all the tools he just has to continue to improve and expand his game. Maybe he'll be the same player next year but with his work ethic and drive I have my doubts.

You think, across the globe in other professional leagues, that Buddy has some built in advantage over those guys? He's a real good college player, that plays a ton of minutes and gets a lot of shots. Most of those professional players fall in some similar category.

NBA is a different beast, you better be a superstar or have one or two skills where you are elite. If you don't, you won't stick.

I think OU listed Brewer as 6'3" on the roster back in the day, and Hield is listed at 6'4". I think they are closer in height than you believe but it's been a long time so I could be wrong.

I got my heights from SoonerStats, but they could be wrong too. I thought Brewer was a short guy, which was one of the reasons he had trouble in the NBA. Or sticking in the NBA. Great player for OU though. Tough as nails.

Soonerstats has always been accurate so that's probably correct. Wow...I thought he was taller than that. Revisionist history I guess.

He was tough as nails though. He could ball.

Never said he had any built in advantage only that he's a kid and still has plenty of room to improve. To say he won't stick in the NBA in his future because of where he is at the moment indicates that you think he's reached his ceiling? Or am I just misunderstanding?

I agree, and that was sort of my point in asking the poster to elaborate. I don't follow every team/player in Div. 1, but I can't think of many players who would be head-and-shoulders favorites over Hield if I were considering POY candidates for next season.

For sure! Best player in the best conference in the country (arguably) It'll be interesting to see who goes and who stays. We should have a much better idea then.

Buddy has that motor and heart I don't see in Oubre something that is not teachable. I see why Popovich always ends up with players that are not on the who's who list of stars he goes for that guy the guy who leaves it on the floor.

I keep hearing high ceiling high ceiling and that you can find shooters a dime a dozen where? Not in the NBA a lot of athleticism and brick layers. Fortunately that has started to change now as we see with Curry, Thompson, Korver etc that the need for good shooters helps to space the floor along with transitioning of the break.

I watch a guy like Eric Gordon and his game and when I look at Buddy's game I see similarities, but to me Buddy plays better defense. There is a lot more room for growth in Buddy's game.

Wow

Buddy needs to develop a couple of moves that will allow him to separate himself from the defender when he's closely guarded. I believe he'll do that as he improves his handles. His hops are good when he gets a running start. I just don't see that same degree of lift when he's shooting his jump shots. He's more of a set shot, rhythm shooter, much like Kelley Newton used to be. I think he'll have more trouble in getting his shot off when he goes up against taller, quicker, more athletic defenders than those he is facing now.

Those are not things that can't be overcome in time. They just make the road to success in the NBA more difficult. In other words, it may take Buddy longer to get there than a player who is not entering the draft with two glaring weaknesses that have the potential to hold him back. That's why I think he would be wise to come back for his senior season.

Some will say he'll have more time to work on his weaknesses if he leaves a year early. There is some truth to that. The question is, will the NBA coaches and GMs be willing to wait that long? That may depend on where he is projected to go in the draft.
