Despite not being overly enthused about seeing the limping Sooners suffer a beat-down at the hands of URI or Duke - I do like the committee's reasoning over my whining.
They're saying schedule harder. Learn on the fly with non-conference competitive games vice the old method of scheduling cupcakes to implement things incrementally prior to conference time.
This actually does make more sense competitively because not every conference plays a round robin like the big-12. Thus there are advantages enjoyed by conference teams that possibly make circumstances inequitable. Judging NCAA-worthiness merely by conference records is a little skewed in that case.
Maybe this won Lon's plan? Maybe he thought it would be harder to do really well in a highly competitive Big-12 for OU's ncaa hopes so he put a lot into playing well in non-conference?
I do prefer the idea of playing teams of major D1 caliber over playing scrubs. Perhaps this is the direction everyone will start to turn and ncaa basketball will enjoy a major improvement over the upcoming years.
