WBB Story

A bit of reality.

In 2018, Louisville was 5th in home attendance, 6th in overall attendance. OU was 27th and 19th.

Go back to 2014: Louisville was third. OU was thirteenth.

Go back to 2009: Louisville was tenth. OU was fourth.

Iowa State: 2009 third, 2014 second, 2018 third

Iowa State has been to two elite eights and three sweet sixteens. They have never won a Big Twelve title. Finished second three times and tied for second another time. Yet, they are constantly in the top five in attendance.

Interesting story which goes to show that if the program is doing what it takes to have a consistently successful program, the seats will be filled and contributions will come in. It looks like Walz needs to try to get some endowments since he has a successful program. He recruits, strategically coaches (we've seen that first hand during the 2009 FF) and hires effective assistants.

OU's program landed a financial windfall with all 15 endowments funded between 2005-2007 at $200K per endowment. I'm sure the signing of some of the nations top recruits and winning consistently helped. IMO...it appears the program started coasting and sitting on their laurels after those endowments were funded. And that's sad.

The University of Oklahoma women's basketball program is making history this week by achieving a feat accomplished by only a few such programs in the nation - successful completion of a fund-raising campaign endowing all 15 scholarship positions.

"We began the endowment program in 2005 with a goal of creating a perpetual source of funding for our women's basketball program," said OU head coach Sherri Coale. "The full endowment of all 15 scholarships puts us in a position to achieve self-sufficiency, an accomplishment achieved by very few programs across the country."

In the span of only 30 months, Coale and company have completed the campaign, which endows each position with a $200,000 gift from OU alumni and friends.

Those endowments were funded between the time the Paris twins signed their LOI and the beginning of their Junior year. Correlation?

The irony is that Sherri has not had a full team on scholarship (15) in over a decade.

I don't know that you need a full 15 players on scholarship as it is doubtful that the last two player from a talent perspective brings much to the table and they could create more team dissatisfaction from a minutes played perspective.

It is worth noting that MBB only allows 13 scholarships instead of the 15 WBB gets and they are able to function effectively. WBB has not had more than 13 scholarship player since the 2015-16 season. They did not have 15 scholarship players from the 2012-13 season to the present.

Bingo Sherlock! Great strategy on SC's part. Well, then again...I think Guy Austin (Marketing and Sales guru per his bio) showed up at the end of the first season after the twins arrived. His family members were donors to the endowment fundraising. He replaced an African American (can't recall his name) who was the Operations Director suddenly before the twins signed then was suddenly gone after AOlujuwon signed. Rumor had it that the parents noticed the lack of cultural diversity on the staff so they brought in an over qualified Dr. of Education all of the sudden who had no background in sports. If I remember correctly, the coaching staff all received some hefty increases in salaries. I don't recall seeing incentives but I'm sure those who had incentive bonuses were super happy! Hopefully SHansmeyer got her fair share before leaving as the primary recruiter for the twins, who then convinced AThompson to come along with AOlujuwon and then DRob.

The weirdest pent house to the curb program that I've ever heard of!

EDIT
It looks like SC is consistent. Dr. Bill Pink is the name of the former Operations Director. I stand corrected. He is a student-athlete alumnus of guess where? You got it...OCU. SC's an alum as well. His bio does not include his time spent with OU WBB. Hmmmm. It would be kinda' funny if it wasn't such a shame regarding the decline of the program. Does she know anyone outside of Oklahoma that qualifies to coach in her program?

I think it's very sad when I go to the men's board and there's a thread from guys that don't really even follow women's basketball, about how horrible the women's program has become. if people that don't really care a whole lot about women's basketball or actually starting to voice their opinions it's got to be pretty bad and something needs to change. A lot of the talk was how in the world Colton qualifies to be an assistant coach... This is the biggest mystery In this program to date. Said something about Bo Overton leaving and then since he left the recruiting noticeably got worse? I guess I don't know who that guy is but he needs to come back ASAP!

Bo Overton was a quality assistant that left OU after the 2003 season and was replaced by Chad Thrailkill for the head coaching job at UMKC and is currently the OCU WBB head coach. Pam DeCosta during her first tenure at OU 1996-1998 identified Stacy Dales not Bo.

But if you are going to identify an assistant that was key to the quality BB players that commited to the Sooners 2005-2010 Stacy Hansmeyer was the key to the Paris twins, Olajuwon, Amada Thompson and DRob, Nyeshia Stevenson and Carlee Roethlisberger signing with the Sooners. Hansmeyer left OU in 2011 and our recruiting has not been getting high quality players since 2010 when we signed Whitney Hand who could have been a Hansmeyer signee but I am not certain.

And both reportedly left because of Sherri and her refusal to ink players the likes of those mentioned above.

The best year that OU has ever had was 2002. We went to the finals against Connecticut, a great UConn team.

1. She hired Bo Overton after being here for two years.

2. There was no Staci Hansmeyer

3. There had never been a Courtney Paris or any highly-ranked recruit.

Two people were responsible for building the program: Sherri Coale and Jan Ross.

Bo Overton hasn't won anywhere except at an already national championship OCU. He had a losing record at UMKC and the Chicago pro team. He was a fine assistant.

Among the reasons that I have heard that OU has declined:

--Staci left
--need a male coach like Bo Overton (as though women weren't enough)
--Courtney needed to lose weight

I figure that she and Jan will rebuild again with whatever type of player they can recruit to OU. We had a series due to one recruit. But, that wasn't enduring. But, we had something that was working before her, and it can be done again.

Now, you can go back to your complaining.

Several posters here made frequent mention that Courtney needed to lose weight to be in her best physical condition and to elevate her game. No one made that an issue for OU's decline as a basketball program. OU basketball program was at its peak when Courtney graduated after the 2009 season.

OU made the Final Four in 2010 and the Sweet 16 in 2011 when DRob and Carlee were seniors, Hand a sophomore and Ellenberg and Griffin, Hook and Jeffcoat were freshmen. Ellenberg #15 PG, Griffin #10 center and Jeffcoat #4 center were ranked in the top 100 nationally and in the top 15 or better at their position by HoopGurlz. Not a program seen as in decline by anyone in 2011 and followed by only 1 Sweet 16 appearance in 2013 since.

FWTW anyone notice Rice is in the top 25 and Arkansas is having a decent season! Just wondered.

Yep, and I can think of two young ladies that might have a thankful smile on their face with their circumstances at their new schools.

Yeah I just saw that Rice is ranked for the first time EVER apparently!! I've looked at a few of their games and Mulkey is having a very steady, if not great season. Looks like she's a good rebounder (she should be) and has scored in the high 20s a couple games too. If we had her she would have impacted the scoring of so many teams that best us, we'd be sitting at several more wins IMO.

Dungee I've actually seen play on TV and she's a very consistent scorer and leader for her team. She and Ana together could have been great out there on the perimeter or taking the ball to the hole. When I heard we landed Ana those were my thoughts in fact, I was so excited!

Those two are great examples of how players improved after leaving OU. Not sure how much better they would have/could have been had they stayed.

I'd rather look towards the future at this point.
Anyone thinking SC will add anymore to this incoming class? I feel like she needs to, especially bc of my expectation that at least 1 player will transfer out...Or do you all think she'll remain inactive and satisfied with the 3 we have and hope for the best??

I think Dungee overstayed her welcome. Nancy had some issues. I've seen more on Texas boards, but I have no idea where they get their information.

The Rice schedule presents Mulkey with an opportunity. If she were in the Big Twelve, I suspect that she would be about what she was when here. But, the strongest teams that she plays at Rice are teams like Western Kentucky. She faces no tall posts. Probably has nobody in the conference over 6-3. Still, she only averages about six rebounds. If she were against Keilani Brown, Lauren Cox, Egbo, White, Burkhart, etc., the typical big Twelve posts, think she would be averaging 12 and 6? Not without getting tougher.

Two who might have been, But, it wasn't all about basketball.

I'll agree with that. Rice definitely doesn't have the schedule the Big 12 presents. But to be ranked top 25 must mean somebody thinks they're good, regardless.

Syb, who do you think will leave after this season? Do you think everyone will actually stay? I would be surprised if they all did, honestly. I hope they stay and come back better next season but SC's track record as of late has been poor as far as that is concerned.

Can Scott, at 6'1" actually play down low for us? Madi is just too short, she needs to be a Wing, not a Forward IMO..

Is Bloom big enough or tough enough to be an asset? Or is she another 'project?'

I see Lampkin coming back much improved next season. She's about the only freshman I've seen consistenly improve throughout the season.

One person appears to have some issues with the teammates. A possibility.

Scott is a slightly bigger version of Madi who is a bit more offensive. I don't think she is better, just different.

Madi is a star who simply needs some help. It doesn''t help if the other team feels they can use their post and PF to cover you. Get someone else inside.

Sherri made the comment last night on her show that Jessi, Ana, and Nydia are going to be excellent stars. I don't think there was any doubt on Madi. Jessi and Nydia are beginning to get the idea of what college is about. She said last week that Tatum would make it this year. It'll come together.

Bloom. I just hope that she can play 6-4. She usually likes to face the basket. Likes to run, shoot from anywhere. Quick on putback. In only one game did I see her play the role of a banger. She was dominant for about ten minutes when she did. Took over all aspects of a game: blocked shots, boards, putbacks, defense. Everything within ten feet belonged to her. I haven't seen that attitude but rarely. We'll see what develops.

Sometimes kids have to find a place to fit. If you have a Madi, that changes what you need from Bloom.

I always had the feeling that Courtney, Amanda, and Ashley had a problem if they were on the court with each other. They all played the same role. Amanda seemed to be more effective when Courtney and Ashley left. I felt that Rush was a post who moved to PF when Courtney came, and she wasn't rearly a forward. I loved having Amanda with Abi a lot more than with the Paris'. Would love to have had a Llanusa when Courtney was here.

I'm interested to see how the fits work when we have Bloom, Nydia (Aspen?), Madi, and Liz. Who helps, and who fights for the same space? How does the combination affect Ana or Gabby? If you have a couple of scorers, Taylor's role changes because they can;t go out to her as much. Can Shaina develop a role in which she is effective? Jessi seems to be doing it. Shooting 50% from guard.

I was always disappointed that Nyeshia was so quick, but used it so little on defense. i was surprised that she became a shooter. I would have thought she would use her quickness to steal and get layups. I expected the same of Shaina. But, they have to find the fit that works for them. I think Shaina should concentrate on defense and a short jump shot. DRob learned to hit a fifteen footer, along with layups and free throws. Still can''t hit the three.

A few things...

1. Bo Overton initiated the recruiting with the Paris twins. He was also recruiting Erika Arriaran (Texas 2005 signee) who introduced the Paris twins to Overton. Arriaran and the twins were on a club team together. Hansmeyer took over where Overton left off. Arriaran chose Texas after Overton left and my understanding is the twins came close to joining her at Texas. Jan Ross sort of eludes to it in one of those videos during the CParis jersey recognition.

2. Always funny when I read anything about CParis not losing weight. I might be able to see the point if she came close to breaking numerous records or if she came close to getting one double double or if she came close to being the first ever unanimous 4 time All American, or if SC came close to getting $250K from 15 donors, or if the attendance came close to being decent from 2005-2009 or if ....fill in the blank. I believe it was the 2005-06 season when OU played UCONN where Geno stated in his post game interview that it would have been a much closer game if the other players were not standing around watching CParis. The guards provided very little help if any that game; like they were shell shocked. Clearly her body has not prohibited her from being one of the best to ever play WBB. And FYI...body weight didn't stop DAdams (TAM) from helping her team to win a NC. Oddly enough, she was one of the players that wanted to go to OU.
