What are your priorities for a new coach?

Great coaching leads to good recruiting. A lot of good recruiters can't coach. Calipari = no ring.

I shake my head at every one of you who continues this incessant "great recruiting" request.

you're falling into the same trap that Capel led us to in the first place.

We are NOT going to rebuild this program thru great recruiting. Quite honestly that's one of the dumbest things I have heard. We need guys who can win with the recruits OU can support consistently.

If you think Joe C. will find some recruiting genius that will have us outtalenting others then you need to send me to YOUR dealer because the stuff you're smoking is better than mine.

Reading way to much into anything. Win games and recruits will come. I would rather have a better coach.

Capel was a terrible recruiter, which is why we sucked. We need someone who can tap into the JUCO talent around the country and pull some solid high school talent at the same time. I'd consider that a "great recruiter."

For about 25 years this program's lifeblood was securing top junior college prospects to mesh with some good four year players. Capel had no impact juco's in his five years at OU, that killed him.

This.

OU may land the occassional top talent, but most of the time we won't. And when we do, it'll likely leave early. We have to be able to survive those years with lesser talent, and THAT takes coaching.

Not saying I want a crappy recruiter. Just that I want a guy that is known for in game coaching, or player development first.

Lets just be honest. Jeff Capel sucked at virtually all aspects of coaching. He did not evaluate talent well. He did not recruit well. He did not coach defense well. He did not coach offense well. He did not discipline/control his team wel. He did not comply with NCAA rules well. He did not get along with AAU coaches. He did not retain players.

The guy was a joke and he took OU for about $10,000,000. The mistake is over. With all that said, he did seem like a swell guy, just a bad coach.

I want a guy who is tough minded, won't take ****, and can flat out coach.
Next, I want a guy who can have a consistant recruiting strategy of being able to fill the roster with 4 years glue guys plus have one or two guys that we have to worry about leaving early every year.

Under Capel we basically looked like we had no system. Remember the article from the Kansas City guy from the year we were in the Elite 8 about OU? He basically said we had no system at that time. And we were a top 10 team. I don't know if were that bad with Blake but when you have a freak like Blake that solves a lot of issues. Just like having Jordan and Bryant and solves a lot of problems with the triangle offense that makes it not work as much at other places in the NBA.

At the college level the freaks of nature just don't go everywhere. And usually they go to the blue bloods most of the time. You can't have a program rely on just that. You have to get a system have roles for your team and recruit to that system. I think that's where Capel had problems because it looked like we had no system.

We have been over this. He sucked at coaching. The guy is a fool but he is a fool with $10,000,000 from OU and apparently a nice guy.

Actually, in this case it would be Castiglione playing the part of fool. Capel has a 10M$ head start on a new future and was fired before losing became his legacy. It's not like the ACC or Big East teams needing a cheap(er) new coach wouldn't convince themselves that it was OU (a football school in flyover country) and not Capel.
