You know to me its pretty interesting how much we expect as fans of this program. Let's look at some facts/serious takes:

- The state of Oklahoma really only produces an average of 1-2 Big 12 Caliber players per year (sometimes more...sometimes less).

- This is a football state

- The OU football program is a monster and the g.o.a.t. imo

- Women's basketball is very, very popular in this state

- Our fan support has been traditionally putrid

- The students at OU traditionally don't support basketball

Its pretty remarkable that the success that Oklahoma basketball has had over its history despite those obstacles. Its amazing that we have winning records against every team in the Big 12 not named Kansas and have experienced so much postseason experience and success.

What do you (as an OU fan) expect from OU basketball on a year to year basis?

In this new 10 team league I would like to get to the point where we regularly finish in the top 4 of the league and make the tournament.

I think we should compete with Kansas year in and year out for best in the league. I think that we should routinely be ranked in the top 15. I believe that we should have top 10-15 signing classes.

Should be perennial top 3 in league play, occasional league crown
Perennial NCAA tourney team, occasional deep run

Under Kelvin Sampson, we made the NCAA Tournament every year but one. I don't think that's too much to ask.

make the tournament every year.
finish no lower than 4th or 5th in the conference.
compete for the conference championship at least 1 out of every 3 years.
trip to the final 4 at least once in 10 years.

top 4 in the league, make the tourney... every few years make a run for a regular season or postseason league title... pretty much what kelvin did here is what i expect... without the cheating...

1. winning record
2. improvement

What were your expectations 6 years ago?

My expectations now are different than they were 6 years ago. Back then, I expected an NCAA tournament bid every year and top 4 finish in the conference.

Now, I'm just expecting improvement.

I think we're having a communications gap here. I'm not saying that I expect a new coach to immediately come in and finish in the top 4 and go to the tournament. What I am saying is that when we have things "up and running" at their best then I would like to think that on a yearly basis we can finish in the top 4 and go to the tournament. I don't expect it to happen every single season. I do think that is a good (and attainable) goal to shoot for, however.

I don't believe in this whole "this is our goal for the year" philosophy. There are so many variables and items that we don't even have access to see that anything we set as a "goal" is even less than a guess. This makes the whole thing dangerous because no matter how much we say different ... we actually temper our feelings based upon that ignorant goal.

Plus, it is little more than cheap, dime-store psychology. It actually creates an ebb and tide of motivation vice a consistent increase and is much less efficient than realistic micro-achievements that can be evaluated daily, weekly etc... to modify behavior.

I expect (overall) the team to play better at the end than they did at the beginning. The logistics and specifics of that is up to the coach.

If you are in the top half of a conference like the Big 12 you make the Tournament. The Big 12 will send at least 5 or 6 every year.

Next years expectations are of course lower because of how bad we've been.

See...HOW can you make an OU expectation like that which involves things that are totally outside of OU's control?

That's ridiculous.

Here: My goal is for it to rain tomorrow.

Boy...sure hope I reach my goal or I am going to be upset.

Understand?

To sum up your expectations, you were happy with Capel this past season because our team was better at the end of the season than at the beginning?

Then, why were you so excited when it was announced he was getting canned?

Coolm are you serious with this logic? Basically you can't comprehend how one sets goals for oneself in a competitive market? If I say I want OU to make the Dance every year, that basically means I want OU to be in the top 30-35 teams in the country every year. I don't care that we can't control the talent in this conference, but based on the recent history of the Big 12 which we are assuming will continue, the top 5 teams are among the top 35 in the country and get in the tourney.

I'm not sure how you don't understand this. OU should be in the tourney every year, if not we aren't in the top 35 teams. I want OU to be among the top 35 teams, no matter what is going on with other programs. If the program can't compete with these best teams then we need to get a coach who has the skill to get us there and keep us there every year. Improvement over the course of the year isn't enough, there has to be improvement from year to year as well.
