Expect or like to see?
OU has never been a top program, despite those who think that Billy and Kelvin had us there. We have never been listed as one of the top schools by a majority of elite players across the country. They list Duke, Connecticut, Ohio State, North Carolina, UCLA, Georgetown, Kentucky, Kansas, or even Memphis. Memphis? Do you know how ridiculous it is that Memphis be listed as anything?
If we want to be one of those schools, we have to commit to building that program. I am not really concerned with the short-term won-loss record. I am interested to see whether we can get in on some of the top talent. If we could get one of the top prospects every year, one of the top ten, we would be able to build a program.
As good as Tubbs and Sampson were, they only got the top players if they happened to be from Oklahoma. Who was the last highly-rated player that either got out of NY or Texas or California or Chicago? They did it with mirrors, JC players, and role players to go with some not bad just less than stars.
At least Capel was talking to the top prospects. We need someone who can talk to them, get their attention. If Blake would help, it wouldn't hurt. Heroes help. We need a coach who can get a bunch of just less than stars who can play roles, but who can at least get visits from the top four or five players in the nation occasionally. If we have that, we can build a program. If not, we are dependent on the smoke and mirrors of an individual coach. Strangely enough, even Tubbs and Kelvin left with some people happy to see them gone.
I would like to see the Sweet Sixteen at least every other year, and the Final Four once every five or six years at most. That is a program. Until we have that, we are bragging about minor accomplishments, pretenders.
