What are your yearly expectations of OU basketball

What do you expect from OU basketball year to year

In my lifetime (b. Sept 1981), OU has missed the post season 3 times and has only had two losing seasons, all under Capel. I don't see how it is unreasonable to expect that kind of success to continue.

True.

Expect or like to see?

OU has never been a top program, despite those who think that Billy and Kelvin had us there. We have never been listed as one of the top schools by a majority of elite players across the country. They list Duke, Connecticut, Ohio State, North Carolina, UCLA, Georgetown, Kentucky, Kansas, or even Memphis. Memphis? Do you know how ridiculous it is that Memphis be listed as anything?

If we want to be one of those schools, we have to commit to building that program. I am not really concerned with the short-term won-loss record. I am interested to see whether we can get in on some of the top talent. If we could get one of the top prospects every year, one of the top ten, we would be able to build a program.

As good as Tubbs and Sampson were, they only got the top players if they happened to be from Oklahoma. Who was the last highly-rated player that either got out of NY or Texas or California or Chicago? They did it with mirrors, JC players, and role players to go with some not bad just less than stars.

At least Capel was talking to the top prospects. We need someone who can talk to them, get their attention. If Blake would help, it wouldn't hurt. Heroes help. We need a coach who can get a bunch of just less than stars who can play roles, but who can at least get visits from the top four or five players in the nation occasionally. If we have that, we can build a program. If not, we are dependent on the smoke and mirrors of an individual coach. Strangely enough, even Tubbs and Kelvin left with some people happy to see them gone.

I would like to see the Sweet Sixteen at least every other year, and the Final Four once every five or six years at most. That is a program. Until we have that, we are bragging about minor accomplishments, pretenders.

The University of Oklahoma until Capel was a top 20 program very year. Kelvin Sampson averaged 23 wins a year which 23 wins will get you a solid 18-25 in the rankings.

untrue and ridiculous.
I think you're just trying to be contrary.

I was born in 1982 and the only losing seasons I've ever known were under Capel. We deserve better because we've DONE better.

well I was born long before 1982 and OU certainly has the ability to finish well below the mendoza line you establish there.

I think more than a quarter-century of sustained success should raise expectations.

What does that have to do with anything? Our fans aren't asking for conference championships and Elite 8 runs every year. That is what KU, NC, and those top tier schools insist on. Our expectations are lower than that.

Fans like you hold back the program b/c they have no clue just what we've done over the last 30 years. I think Traveler posted a link a week ago that rated OU as the 15th best men's basketball program over the last 30 years. Think about that for a minute, before you shoot down "making the tournament" as being a ridiculous expectation for our program.

Sorry, coolm. OU has all the variables required to make them a perennial NCAA tournament team. In fact, they've demonstrated the very same in the past. All they need is a coach to bring it all back together.

I understand the point you are trying to make. But, it's irrelevant. One can still hope for, and expect OU to reach the NCAA tournament every year; because despite the fact that some things are out of OU's control, enough of the factors are within their control to make this goal accomplishable on a regular basis.

As such, I agree with the consensus on here.

no doubt about it. the minimum expectation is to make the tournament every year, whether it's a 12 seed or a 3 seed. it's not going to happen every year. but this is a top 25-30 program, and should always be among the competition for a bid.
