What type of PF does Sherri want

Honestly, she has me confused. About the time I think she wants to run a 4-guard offense, she signs Portia, Kellogg, and Gibbs.

Can someone please fill me in on what is going on?

She wants Caton Hill or Joanna from the last half of last year; the ultimate would be Elana Delle Donne...but it is difficult to find someone 6'1" to 6'3" with some bulk that is a good 3 point shooter.

I think she wants some flexibility based on the opponent. Sometimes, if you are lucky one player gives you that flexibility, but that's unusual. Sometimes, you need a 4 that's more like a big guard. Sometimes you need a 4 that's more like a true power forward.

I think she want's an athletic post who can hit a consistent 15 footer.

Folks,

I think she wants a Whitney Hand who is faster, an inch or 2 taller and bit broader in the shoulders with the same brain level.

What she has now is 3 or 4 players who each possess some of those qualities but no one who possesses them all.

I think Pierre-Louis looks like what I think Sherri wants. She appears to be mobile, strong enough to rebound and get to where she wants to go, and she is a good shooter facing the basket. Right now, I think of her as a power forward, with Kay Kay being a center.

I wonder if Sherri wouldn't prefer the Elvin Hayes type of PF with Unseld as the center. Hayes was taller, mobile, and a good shot. Unseld was too short, but was a brick wall who could rebound and hold his position. UCLA used this when they didn't have an Alcindor or Walton. Clifford Ray won an NBA title with that style and Rick Barry at PF. Someone dominate the middle, and let's have a PF who can play anywhere and rebound as well. It does pull the opposing center away from the basket.

I don't think there's much question about what Coach wants in a power forward; just look at the long line of successful power forwards at Oklahoma and pick out the common characteristics.

Okay, the names of Caton, Joanna, Whitney, and Pierre-Louis have been thrown out. While all of them are good players (except Pierre-Louis as the jury is still out on her), the only one of them who would be considered a guard is Whitney. I think most would agree that Caton and Joanna better fit the mold of a true PF but they certainly are not guards.

I don't see Gibbs, Kellogg, or Portia comparing well at all to any of the players mentioned above. Sherri is currently starting Kornet at that position who does fit better into the guard category than she does a power forward position. So, I'm still confused. If Sherri wants a player like Kornet to fill that position, why recruit Kellogg, Portia, or Gibbs? But, if she wants a Caton Hill type player, why recruit Kellogg, Portia, or Gibbs?

I think if Kellogg, Gibbs, or Portia were ready to play, they might be our PF. They aren't, and Kornet, more of a wing, is the best option.

Kellogg is potentially one that fits the mold. Even with her height she made a lot of treys her senior year in high school. I hope she eventually takes Portia's minutes.

We will probably have to wait a year to see what Kellogg and Wyatt can do. It looks like a 7 lady rotation in the tough games. 40 minutes for Ellenberg and 34 for Hook even with her injuries. Foul trouble gave Portia a few minutes but largely it is the starters plus Carter and KayKay.

So, we are all basically in agreement with what I said -- a slightly larger Whitney Hand who can bang a bit.

I thought Thompson was 6-2 or taller, a bit taller than Hand. Amanda could be close to what Sheri wants too, though.

I think so too. She's just young right now. She looks better to me as a freshman than did Joanna. Joanna really didn't come into her own until part of her junior year and her senior year, after Whitney was injured. Shaya looks very similar to Joanna, to me, at this point and I think she's quicker than Joanna. Shaya is going to be fine, just will take her a while.

If Kellogg can shoot threes, now would be a good time to do it for this team. I just don't see her in the category of a Whitney, Amanda, Caton, etc.

Remember that at one time when she was a freshman, the fans were screaming that we wanted McFarland instead of Abi. Then, Abi came on strong at the end of the year, and we wondered how we would replace Abi.

Banjo got it! A Leah is what she wants. (You beat me to it, Norm!)
