When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

if i had to bet, id say he will be back

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

Thought this was interesting as well

From the same article:

Think things were healthier when Blake Griffin was still around? Let's take the Sooners' Elite Eight season. According to the 08-09 annual report, OU lost $1,567,000 on men's basketball.

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

Translation: Capel probably isn't going anywhere. If he does, don't expect much out of our next hire. OU isn't going to pony up a bunch of cash for even a somewhat high profile mid major coach for a program that loses money even at its highest points. I'm starting to agree with Sooner04. OU b-ball is dead, or at the very least on life support.

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

didn't realize we were in the red like that. sad.

yep - things need to stay at status quo. getting that book back in the black is much more important than winning a few more games IMO. those finances are a matter of university survival and education quality so JC better strap in and start fixing things for the long haul.

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

I'd like to know what financial status of the basketball program was before Kelvin stepped down?

The question in my mind is has the basketball program lost revenues because of Capel's performance? Or is it because the AD isn't managing the program as it should be managed to make money?

Uh. No.

Separate budgets. And just b/c basketball is in the red (which I don't understand, b/c I was told it made money under Kelvin), doesn't mean the athletic department is in the red.

Pretty sure OU, as a college, isn't in danger of "surviving."

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

Not to mention, the quickest way to fix any basketball money problem is to start winning again, infuse enthusiasm into the program, and make more money.

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

How do you account for all the loss in money?

We have a butts in seats problem. But not a paid attendance problem. We're averaging 9k+ tickets sold I believe. So how in the heck are we losing that kind of money?
TV contracts?

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

TV contracts?

Bingo. I think you guys are missing the point though. It doesn't matter even when the product is really good. (Blake & Elite 8) we still lost 1.5 million dollars.

Blame Beebe.

Uh. Yes.

You don't go throwing good money after bad. I don't like spending in the red ... even if I am a liberal.

I am sure you meant to say "not surviving", and you miss the point. I am saying that the finances are the a priori concern. You don't violate their health in order to win a few more basketball games.

Not missing the point at all.
My point is that it is impossible for OU to make money in basketball.
We sold out nearly every game that season. We entered and won arguably the highest profile preseason tournament. If we were losing money, there's absolutely nothing we can do to make money.

Therefore, it's irrelevant. And Capel staying or going shouldn't matter.
Football is always going to carry us.

And I'm saying that even though basketball might not be making money right now (I don't see how that is possible), the athletic department as a whole is still in the black, by quite a bit I'd imagine.

I remember reading at one point a few years ago that athletics-wise, only football and men's basketball paid for itself. If that is true, then you'd be against firing any coach of all the other sports, b/c they are all in the red every year.

It does matter to the extent that we'd hafta go 6 million in debt to buy out JC's contract AND hire a new guy...plus for a respectable new guy we'd need to up the ante on salary.

Exactly. Sorry wasn't calling anyone out just trying to clarify. Kind of sad now that I think of the repercussions of this point.

Re: When considering coaching change, follow the money >>> Tulsa World

Here is my question. The Department of Education has very different numbers than the athletics department annual report.

http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstDet...264743d332f372f3230313120323a32313a343220504d

They have men's basketball well in the black, taking in well over $8 million in revenue and spending $5.7 million. Obviously they are looking at different data, but what is the difference? Simple accounting tricks? That is my first instinct, but does anyone know for sure?

I think the buy out is 2 Million!!!!!!
