Who could we get to replace Capel?

personally I have thought Capel was in over his head from the beginning and was able to catch lightning in a bottle with Blake Griffin. Props to him for being set financially for life from OU. But OU deserves the kind of results from paying that much for a coach.

It looks like Jeff Capel's tenure at Oklahoma is going to end after next season. With all the defections and controversy, it's going to be damn near impossible for OU to do any better next season. We may have a slightly better record, but we're probably going to miss the postseason again. In that case, Capel will have to go. As I've said in other threads, we're a football school, but we have a rich basketball tradition and two straight seasons without postseason play are intolerable.

Very very weak....What were you thinking 51 weeks ago. Yes we had a very long run of post season play but this is not unusual for college hoops or some of you so called "fans". Please educate your expectations and your loyalty. Looking to jump ship at the 1st chance does not help a program.

There are 7 or 8 major coaching vacancies this year so far, so the list of coaches you would want at OU after a hypothetical horrible 2010-2011 season would be a lot different than the list of available coaches this year.

This may sound a little harsh but I think some of those who are wanting Capel's head were the same ones who were all in a panic that he was going to be hired away from us last year. I'm sorry but those reactions are what one would expect from junior high girls.

This was a tough year. No one could imagine it being this bad. Injuries, bad chemistry, discipline and lack of depth. Who could have thought that Allen wouldn't improve to give good minutes? Longar did. Sometimes players just don't work out. All of the above is Capel's fault. But a year like this can happen to any coach. Look at Barnes, Donovan and Williams, for instance. There needs to be significant improvement next year with the year finishing with a promise for an even better year following. Joe C will give him another year, probably two and there is not much anyone can do about that. So it would be best for us to support our coach in the meantime.

We can take comfort that Joe C will not let the program drift down to perpetual suckage. He has too much pride for that to happen. But he is a smart, good motivator of people. His first reaction to adversity is to support his guy. He will give Jeff plenty of time to right the ship. If he does not, what quality coach would ever want to come to work for him if he will get fired the first time he stumbles?

Let me be clear. Right now Jeff Capel is the coach of my Sooners and he has my support. I liked him last year. I like him this year. Loyalty only has meaning if it carries you through rough times. Loyalty means nothing if it is all about good times and winning.

Dear trueOU, please do not lump us in with internet message board posters. Otherwise, great post.

Sincerely,

Jr. High Girls

By 3rd years, do you mean law school, med school or other? B/c if you're talking about law school that's just weak. Especially 2nd semester b/c your GPA and class rank are basically set by then. I had season tickets at IU and went to almost every game in LS except around finals and managed to graduate with honors at a top 25 LS. That's really just an excuse. However, if you're talking about a different program, please ignore b/c I have absolutely no clue. :p

We're talking med school.

Good point ABD. The coaching list will be completely different. Which is why this thread is useless.

I'm not looking to jump ship at the first opportunity. If I were, I'd want Capel fired right now. Despite the fact that he coached us to our worst season since 1981, I want him to get another year precisely for the reasons you mentioned. Despite a great deal of adversity within a few months of taking the job, he tuned the program around. I admire him for that. However, next season isn't much better than this one and the NCAA comes calling about the Gallon thing, what choice do we have?

I know the names will be different next year, but I was just throwing some hot prospects out there. Surely, I'm not the only one on this board who believes that OU could be looking for a new basketball coach in a year's time.

The witch hunt has already started by the tard 87 & denver seems to have joined in plus this bms clown.
Caple will be given at least 2 yrs more. Why not get behind the program?

You have jumped ship because you treat it as a done deal and even if it was a done deal how are you helping. Its more likely things are much better next season and showing support is the way fans can help.

I really hate having an intelligent coach who can actually read, write, and speak English. Coaches are supposed to be stupid and say dumb things that would embarrass any university were they to be said by anyone other than the coach. Yeah. We really need a new coach who can get us back to ----what was that again? Getting beat by the national champs in the elite eight is embarrassing. Let's see. Who, exactly, would be good---Bobby Knight, Dick Vitale, Woody Hayes?

It's obvious that some people have given up on Coach Capel and the program. This is sad. Some of you are in for a big surprise. What will be amazing is that the same exact people throwing our coach under the bus will be the same ones praising him next year when he gets this turned around. Felton Jeffery Capel is a winner. If you don't think he realizes how bad things were this year then you're crazy. He knows some people have to go and he knows that he has to do a better job. Let's give him a chance to right the ship. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!

Capel's going to be here, but if he does go, I'd honestly like Tommie Griffin.

As head basketball coach?

BTW, no way Capel is gone after next season barring unforeseen off-the-court problems.

1. it's silly to look at replacements now. coach has at least 2 years left.

2. if you're gonna speculate then at least be smart and look at the coaches kicking butt with less in the ncaa's.

No way? If OU is terrible next season there is no way he keeps his job at OU. You cant go 13-18 and have a similar record the next year and keep your job in major college basketball unless you coach in an impossible situation like what Baylor was in.

I was trying to give a sarcastic stupid answer to a ridiculous thread.
