When did they back out of the classic?

Not sure why, but there was an article this week saying Ostate was playing a men's and women's double header next year in the all college. It looks like OU isn't playing in it next year. The article also mentioned that OU and Ostate should play against each other but Joe C is against it.

OU and OSU have no business playing each other in that tournament. Why? They are guaranteed two games every season, and some seasons meet for a 3rd time.

I'd love to see a round robin type deal with OU, osu, TU, and either Arkansas or Oral Roberts, but I don't think OU or osu would go for that. Even a similar setup to what they have now, with it not being an actual tournament, but 4 of the area teams playing one game against each other. Let OU/ORU and osu/TU play one year, then the next let OU play TU, and osu play ORU.

Why don't they go back to the tournament style with 4 teams in 2 days. I always liked it and there were some good teams that came in and played.

The 8 team tournament wasn't too bad either. Back in the day I saw San Francisco with Bill Russell and KC Jones playing in the all-college.

If memory serves me the NCAA decreased the number of tournament exemptions that they give out. A tournament like Maui only counts as one game. When they decreased the number of them it cut some out. The All-College was one. If it counted as one game I am sure they would go back to a different format and we would see better teams.

I thought the deal was that they removed the exemptions.

Thus, all of the various preseason tournaments only count as one game... so you got a proliferation of them... Orlando, Puerto Rico, Anaheim, etc.

I thought it was the proliferation of these tournaments in more interesting locations is really what killed the All-College as a "tournament."

It could still be viable, IMO, if OU and OSU were good and they brought in a few marquee opponents.

Exactly! I think we've helped them enough! I don't even think that would save the All-College. Attendance would go from 3,000 to 5 or 6,000.

I am not sure why they don't make it an instate thing

Once at BOK and the next year at the PEAK

one year OU vs Tulsa and OSU vs ORU
the next ORU vs OU and Tulsa vs OKState

this would be awesome when it was at the BOK and would be worth the drive if it was in OKC

Well I got a minute so I looked it up. We were both kind of right. Now each team may play in 1 exempt tournament a year (See link). But if you are limited to one and most people play theirs at the begining of the year that is hard on the holiday tournaments. Something about the article (from '06) doesn't quite ring true. It seems there were a lot of events going on this past week.

Yeah -- I might not have said it quite right, but this is what I meant. :)

The rule change allowed for more exempt tournaments to be created, because everybody can play in one ever year. So instead of just Maui and the Great Alaska Shootout, you get the tournaments in Anaheim, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, Orlando, etc., going on in November, effectively killing the chances of any kind of a Holiday tournament.

no reason to play at BOK

Exactly. The All College Classic is presented by the All Sports Association of Oklahoma City not of Tulsa.

But I think the point is that if they are going to let the event flounder because they have bigger fish to fry (Thunder), then why not partner with the Tulsa Sports Commission and see how it does over here?

It certainly can't be worse than drawing 4K or whatever it's been drawing lately in OKC.

I like the idea

It makes much more sense to let a great event like the All College die than try playing a game or two in Tulsa to see if it can be revived.

They haven't let anything flounder. The dynamics of college basketball scheduling and rules have been the problem not the people operating the event. Changing the venue isn't going to change those aspects.

I for one would love to see all 4 state teams in a tournament situation every year. Attendance would go up and there would be some upsets. Why isn't this a good idea to some people?
