Why is shot selection always an issue?

This isn't just an OU problem either, most high level programs deal with this while the small to mid major programs seem to have a better grasp of what they're trying to do on the offensive end.

Do these kids just not have a high enough basketball IQ at this point in their careers to understand what is/isn't a good shot? The cycle is maddening. Start off slow by missing a lot of jump shots. After a time out the focus returns to ball movement and running offense. Defensive intensity usually picks up as well. The flow of the game completely changes for a couple of minutes maybe even an entire segment between TV time outs. Then the quick long jump shots start coming around again and the process starts all over.

because they are mentally immature human males who have yet to develop a mature pre-frontal cortex so their judgment is clouded by emotion and adrenaline via the limbic system.

when they hit 27 or 28 or so their PFC will take over making such decisions less emotional and more reasoning based. so in the meantime Lon tries to "burn in" some basic rules that provide structure enough for them to follow even in those swells - and maybe even take advantage of them.

we have the advantage of objectivity vice being in the moment of it like they are. having as much of that objectivity left is what makes good on-court awareness. thats what you desire.
