Any takers want to guess what our moody coach will do? I think he sticks with Blair. Personally I would start Blair, and he would have a short rope. Even if he played well I would get my explosive frosh about 20 minutes per game. He does have a high ceiling.

I would play everyone but Cade and Fitz about the same minutes. Neal would probably get the fewest but his minutes should be steady. Of course, Fitz's minutes depend on his foul situation.

Honore would only play if we needed another foul.

I have given up on trying to predict starting lineups and sub patterns. There is no rhyme or reason to them this year

No, Carl Blair will continue to be the starting PG. It appears that the starting lineup is pretty much set. But I think we'll start to see more substitutions like we did tonight.

I like having Newell off the bench, at the very least he brings energy off the bench. He could also provide scoring punch off the bench when he's shooting like he does tonight.

It's kind of hard to post that when we don't see practice. Just as Capel said tonight with Tyler Neal, perform in practice consistently and you will see the court.

no, it was real easy to post that. You mean to tell me you are ok with a player starting one game, then not playing at all for a couple of games, then getting extended minutes in a game? It is baffling and bad for kids confidence, especially young kids (which a large percentage of this team is)

After scoring 16 points in 24 minutes against UVA, Neal played about 10 minutes the next game and got 2 shots, and hasnt really been seen since.

Its impossible to tell if Newell earned more time or a starting spot from his performance.

i agree with this.

If you don't practice well enough to earn yourself playing time, then yes, I'm fine with that.

The kids know they have to consistently play better.

Not to mention, different opponents and schemes can be better or worse for the types of players we have, affecting their PT as well.

With as many new people as we have and with their limited abilities, how else would you have Capel judge who pkays other than their effort in practice???? Their individual performances in games are so varied that the ONLY way to play them and reward the hardest workers is based on practices.

He may be the most talented scoring guard we have. He needs to play a lot more.

I'ld like to see Blair, Newell, Clark, Davis & Fitz line up a few times!

Playing a guy who isn't giving it in practice is going to reinforce bad habits. If he really is having issues with how he's practicing, then he shouldn't be playing more than he is (if the issue is related to effort; if he's just in a slump then I agree with you).

Playing players who don't have the right attitude is how you end up with a team like you guys had last year.

This is just a guess but I do not think Neal is dragging it in practice. I like how he rebounds high. He needs to bulk up and be a good power forward. He could definitely shoot the mid range.

OH by the way, Cam Clark may have the ugliest shot in the history of the game. He needs to be a slashing player with very few shots beyond 15 feet.

AND don't give me all this practice bull! I don't what they do in practice as long as they go and go hard. If Cam shoots lights out in practice it sure does not equate to his shots during the games. Maybe Neal sux in practice but if he goes all out and plays well in games I am all for playing him. I have known quite a few players that looked like they should not play but when the lights came on it was a different story.

No one is saying that Neal is dragging it in practice.

And I would love to see your list of amateur players who don't practice well but perform at game time. Certainly, there are some of those players out there, especially those who are ultra talented but with bad work ethics (ahem, see 2009/10 OU Men's Basketball), but that list is going to be fairly small. And this year, we don't have any ultra talented guys on our roster. To earn significant playing time, they have to consistently perform at a higher level than their teammate at that position. Then, in games, they have to take advantage of that playing time.

Having criticized Coach Capel for last season playing highly touted players despite the fact that they were exhibiting a bad work ethic in practice and workouts, thereby reinforcing their sense of entitlement and oversized egos while rewarding their half-hearted efforts, I'm certainly not going to point fingers at him this season for adopting the opposite approach.

He should absolutely require the guys to earn playing time by working hard and showing improvement during practice.

I would agree if he had a history of doing this. But he really doesn't. I don't know if Capel knows why he plays the players he does or how much they will play. I think he just guesses.

I love some of the logic used on this board. So all of you in favor of Newell now becoming the full time starter just because he had 17 pt in 17 mins...do you really think Newell is going to make 5 stinkin 3's every freakin game????

If he shot 33% (which is probably where he will end up at the end of the year) he would have been 2/6 from 3 and had a total of 8 points. So if that happened next game..and Blair happened to hit 4 3's does Carl win back his starting position?? SOme of you guys need to get a frickin clue. None of you are at the practices day in and day out...Blair is more of a PG and the offense has run smoother when he is out there. Should Newell play more..absolutely..but IMO he should take other minutes. Clark and Cade do not need to be playing 37-40 mins a game...we need fresher legs in there at the end!

If you call running smoothly turning it over something like 30 times in 10 games as PG sure Blair has ran things smoothly.
