Will Newell Start the next game?

My problem with Capel stems from 1 game to the next. Game 1 we will play 7 players against a good but not great team. Then the next game against poor competition we will play 9 or 10 guys to see how they play. NOT GOOD!

That was the problem with the Neal playing pattern early. What the heck is he supposed to think? I know I had no idea what he was trying to do. Newell had a hot hand and he got to play a lot the other night. Let us see what the rotation will be next.

The minutes should basically be scripted like the first series of football games.
Barring injury or foul trouble they should stick to a script in basketball. I believe knowing your minutes will allow you to set your mind to achieve the best you can do. If you are on a short rope, well, it usually does not benefit anyone.

Having criticized Coach Capel for last season playing highly touted players despite the fact that they were exhibiting a bad work ethic in practice and workouts, thereby reinforcing their sense of entitlement and oversized egos while rewarding their half-hearted efforts, I'm certainly not going to point fingers at him this season for adopting the opposite approach.

He should absolutely require the guys to earn playing time by working hard and showing improvement during practice.

:clap:clap

I'm sorry, but that's an absolutely terrible, terrible idea. Your mind should be set to achieve the best you can do regardless of how many minutes you play. These guys are college athletes, not in a grade school summer camp.

If you practice better than the next guy, and then you do good things while in the game, you get the minutes.

And this is probably why you aren't a college basketball coach. You play the guys who give you the best chance to beat any given opponent. Against lesser competition like Sacramento State, you can afford to give guys on the end of the bench some experience, especially if they have earned it in practice.

Do you seriously think Bob Stoops did not play more players against a weaker opponent as he did against Texas or OSU this year?

no, it was real easy to post that. You mean to tell me you are ok with a player starting one game, then not playing at all for a couple of games, then getting extended minutes in a game? It is baffling and bad for kids confidence, especially young kids (which a large percentage of this team is)

I am, especially if they don't practice hard.

Different game. Do football players run for minutes straight? I don't think so. They stand around after a play for the most part and are taken out after a big run. Right? If you can't get your best players rest so they can go full speed at the end of a game you are doomed. Basketball is a different in that the few players are on the floor at one time. This means their mistakes will stand out. Like when we shoot the ball we only have one player near the basket to rebound. That player will either get the rebound or he won't. So this leaves only one other bad thing that can happen. He will foul. Therefore, this makes Fitz get in foul trouble. I think why he is isolated under the basket is because when he is in we spread out from him. Leaving him by himself allows him to be more one on one. He is pretty good like that.

Ever notice when he is out and we have Thompson and C.J. in that we get more offensive rebounds? There is the reason. We do not run isolation plays for them. They are closer to the bucket allowing them to crash more. Don't question whether or not I coach.

If you are not able to see my point I have made I can't help you.
