Willie Warren

He didn't try to play well for the team, he cared about stats and highlight plays.

I don't believe that at all and think it is quite unfair. He was a heck of a player and played on a young team with new pieces and not a lot of experiene. They needed him to take over at times.

He averaged like 16 points and 4 apg. He took 11 shots per game. It isn't like he was out there chucking it up

Like I said he was a good player, from watching the games and hearing about his attitude in practice my opinion is that he wasn't a good teammate. TMG averaged 5 assists and 12 shots per game, was he a good teammate?

I don't blame Willie for the debacle of a season when he was a sophomore. He was injured for part of that year. I put that season squarely on TMG and Tiny, as well as a head coach who didn't know how to handle undisciplined players like them who were out of control way too often.

WWIII was not entirely without fault, though. He was at odds with those two most of the time. It also didn't help that he created a riff with one of his teammates (AJ) by stealing his girlfriend. The old saying, "all is fair in love and war" doesn't apply to a team sport like basketball.

he was a good sooner that played hurt and sick most of his soph year ..

He was definitely not a good Sooner. Boycotting activities, sleeping with teammate's GF's. The list goes on and on.

Not. A. Fan.

I pretty much put TMG, WW, and Tiny in the same camp. Tiny was probably less of a problem than the other two, but then again, he did take the money that got us in trouble with the NCAA.

I actually really prefer to wipe my hands of the entire Capel era. I know we had some good teams with Blake, but I really did not enjoy OU basketball during those years, for a lot of reasons.

I'm with you on all the above. I'll ask the question again - did the una brow pay for him? Just curious to get the boards take. I've always believed he did, but can't substantiate it. Just a guess

Am I remembering wrong that WW and Crocker led a revolt against summer workouts? To me that set TMG and Tiny up to fail. They came to a situation where there was a negative leadership and jumped right on that negative leadership side.

Could be, but I don't remember that happening. There was so much dissension on the team that season, nothing would surprise me.

I certainly remember allegations that he slept with AJ's girl friend and TMG's girl friend. It is pretty bad to do that but when it happens twice in two years it suggests it is some mean spirited, ego trip. Like you think you are a better man if you can destroy your friend's or teammate's relationship.

I also remember claims that Crocker and WW led a revolt to not participate in summer workouts following the great 8 season.

one of those internet message board rumors

It was not a rumor. I got it straight from a member of AJ's immediate family, and he got it from AJ. The locker room scuffle between Willie and AJ was also true. That's why I said there was a lot of dissension on the team that season. I had an inside source back then with ties directly to a member of the team.

For example, the riff between Willie, TMG and Tiny was worse than most people realized. They simply didn't like either other. Now you know why a team with three Mickey D All-Americans could do no better than 13-18 that season.

one side of the story. It is still a message board rumor

My source was and still is a pillar of the Amarillo community. I know him personally and I believe every word he told me. No way he or AJ would make up a story like that.

Take it or leave it, doesn't matter to me.

If Ada says it, I'll take it to the bank. I believe he had a solid connection.

I had some connections back then, too, in Houston because I was still refereeing. TMG was a great player but was a thug. Tiny was a decent kid but messed up with that loan to pay the prep school so they would release his transcript, and tried to pay it back and wanted to stay at OU. The NCAA wouldn't let it happen. I think he could have become a decent player for the Sooners.

I heard all the rumors about WW and AJ's girlfriend but I never heard anything about TMG's girlfriend. TMG just quit going to class. He never intended to stay. I also heard about the revolt for summer workouts led by WW and Crocker but I never knew if that was true or not.

It was a time of dissension and Capel needed to quit being a buddy and start being a coach/disciplinarian.

Willie Warren wasn't a good person. He wasn't as bad as TMG though. The TMG stories were unbelievable and Capel tried every type of discipline and none of it did any good. One time when he was being punished by riding the stationary bike while the team practice he got up to leave. Capel said what are you doing and TMG said leaving **** you and walked out of practice. He sat the first half of the next game.
