Nobody is arguing that they won't be in the tournament. We know this. What we are talking about is the epic collapse and the prospects for an early exit from the tournament. Which has been the norm the last few years.

We went from a projected #2 seed to a probable #6 seed over a two-week period. Call it what you want but it's an epic collapse.

The two weeks before that OU went from a #6 seed to a #2 seed. Maybe this team is just in the top 20-25 and a 6 seed. I'll take that without hesitation.

Those results are very solid in terms of ROI. This fan base doesn’t invest much time or money into the program yet it is a top 25 all timer. Lon out here trying to recruit against bagmen at every turn. Idk what your expectations are but they are not realistic if u expect more than making the tourney every year. Other teams are investing millions more than we are and they have a real fan base that supports the team during its games. When Lon starts missing the tourney with any sort of frequency he will be asked to move on.

Maybe if they built an arena conducive to college basketball that was on or near campus and made going to a game an experience instead of a headache then more fans might show up. I agree that fan support has been lacking, but school support has also been woefully inadequate.

The definitely need a new arena but that will require significant donor support. I’ll go out on a limb and state that if donors wanted the new arena that badly they would have 1.

The fans are the lifeblood of the program and are by far the most important piece to sustaining long term success. Kansas and duke fans make fat donations earmarked for basketball and they sell out every game. Ou fans don’t come close to providing similar support. We will never be able to consistently compete with those programs without instituting a bagman system like baylor, tech, et al. We won’t be paying any recruits as long as our current compliance is in place. With these constraints, the likelihood of finding a squeaky clean coach who can outperform what Lon has done here is very low IMO.

2016 - 2 seed: 40 point loss to (2)Villanova Final Four.
2018 - 10 seed: Loss to (7) Rhode Island 1st round.
2019 - 9 seed: Loss to (1) Virginia 2nd round.

Big 12 seeding: 8, 4, 2, 3, 3, 9, 9, 7, n/a, 7(this year).
2-8 record in the Big 12 Tournament with a 1-1 at best added on this year with how we're playing. Add to this a sub .500b record in Big 12 play the last few years.

Lon is a great person, and coach. He should be a hall of famer. That Final Four season was one of the most fun sports seasons I've had as an OU fan. I appreciate his steadying of the ship after the Capel years, but I find it hard to believe we can't find anyone to improve upon those numbers going forward. Because with the current young group of players and the recruiting we have so far, it ain't getting any better.

Why n/a for last year? Even though there wasn’t a tournament, we played a full conf season and knew what we were seeded.

Obviously we haven’t made the 2-3 plays that could have made the difference in winning some of all of these close games lately. We’re not that far removed from being the team that made those plays to win those games and have shown we can play with and beat top 10 teams. No reason why they can’t get back to that in the next couple of weeks in both tournaments.
