2017 commit Ty Lazenby

Agreed. I've never been more excited (Trae) and discontented (Polla/Lazenby/Manek) about a recruiting class. Like 04 says, hope I'm wrong.

I'm not trying to pick on anyone but am curious to what guys are looking for in regards to recruiting classes and what they should look like? It all depends on what you feel your needs are and on paper OU just filled the most important needs in this class:

PG- Check- 5 star per rivals
SG- Ability to shoot from outside- Check- Juco AA
Post- A guy with size/bulk- Check- 3 star per rivals

and also added another guy (3 star per rivals) that could be the stretch 4 type that Lon covets.

For consistency let's use Rivals. During Lon's tenure most of his recruits have been 3 star guys with a 4 star spinkled in. The best players OU has had during his tenure are 3 star guys for the most part.

Hield- 4 star
Cousins- 3 star
Woodard- 3 star
Spangler- 3 star (yes, I know he transferred from Gonzaga)

My point being, at a program like OU you take the best 3 star/4 star guys you can get that seem to fit your program and build them up best you can and see what happens. Which has worked pretty well for the most part over the years.

sounds like he'll provide smarts, hard-nose play, grades, no bad attitude...

After "attitudes" by DSM (supposedly had a few issues) and possibly Buford (seemed there was SOME question) sure LK is ok with this...

Guess that puts the PG in TY and Shep's hands..with maybe McGusty a little if needed.

Sure Ty will be the 3rd or 4th option at the 2

I have noticed over the past few years that the first half definitely seems to be more open to playing time even to players you would never think would see the floor during Lon's tenure. Whether that be for "learning" purposes or just to play additional guys. However, attached is the breakdown for Mankin that year of 17 appearances and outside of a 19 point win against Missouri he only played "meaningful minutes" in other blowouts. The rest of his games were mop up no matter the number of mins played.

http://www.foxsports.com/college-basketball/austin-mankin-player-game-log?season=2014

Most of his minutes were mop-up, but not all. That's all I'm saying.

It's getting away from the main point, though. If we go to the NCAA tournament, and are healthy, I'll run a naked lap around my street if Lazenby gets much more than mop-up minutes. Feel free to quote me if he gets 15-20 minutes in a close NCAA Tournament game.

I'm not a huge fan of this addition either. I had to dig down deep to find a few positive things to say. What bothers me the most is knowing there are several hundred graduate transfers out there looking for a new home, which makes me wonder: What the heck have our coaches been doing the past month or so? They had to know DSM and Dante would not be around next season.

No matter how you look ar it, Lazenby appears to be a step or two down from the other signees in our 2017 class. Nothing will make me happier than to admit I was wrong!

EDIT: I'll add one thing. If we sign "Big Mac" or a similar immediate impact grad transfer, I'll take back everything I said about the coaching staff's efforts to replace DSM and Dante.

If it's ok with you I'll try NOT to remember this no matter what happens :ez-roll:

I kind of feel bad for Lazenby... put up big numbers in high school, put up big numbers in junior college, and everyone just keeps saying he isn't good enough. He's also 6'5'' which is a good size for a guard. Maybe he needed to put up 45 points per game or something?

I wonder his recruitment or hype would be different if he was black... Ever heard of the 6'5'' 215 black guard who averaged 23 points and 5 rebounds per game that nobody thought was any good? Me either.

No idea how he will fit in at OU, but this is kind of a strange recruiting story.

So people are down on Lazenby because he's white and he'd be a big-time recruit if he was black? That's a bold statement. The guy played at a JUCO and shot 34% from 3. It's reasonable to question how great he'll be in the Big 12.

Ok, so your position at this time is that Lon Kruger made a mistake and signed a player who is intramural quality? And Penn State, Utah, and whoever else offered him?

Happened with Arent. No one is perfect. There's no magical thing that determines if someone is D1

You would think they have seen enough players to know if they are D1 or not. I have no idea if he is or not.

I will say that hitting 3's can be an equalizer... Maybe he will be a spot up shooter type now that he isn't being asked to score 30 per game. He may not even play, but if he can come in and knock dome some jumpers that provides value on a team that is basically looking for bench players because we already have an established starting 5.

Who knows the last time that list was updated. Also, juco recruiting rankings are not very consistent to begin with.

I mean that list shows the #2 rated juco committed to Buffalo. Really???

How did he make Juco All American? He's ranked #65 on this list.

All-America selections are made by the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee. Here's the link proving he was a first team JUCO All-American.

Maybe someone at the NJCAA headquarters can answer your question. Here's the contact information:

Don't care for JUCO pick ups like this. Usually don't turn out to be any good, but hoping for the best.

But I worry more about the work players put in the offseason to get better more than I care about what late pickup we get. We need players to have the work ethic Buddy and Cousins had. Don't just go and shoot shots at a gym, go and do a workout.

You're probably right in that that list hadn't been updated in quite some time. Look at it another way. Lazenby could have been #65 to start the season. Also, that #2 player who is going to Buffalo was not even listed in Ada's link in the "Honorable Mention" category.

I know most aren't jumping for joy here, but let's see what we have. We needed another wing, and I believe we still need another inside player as well.

I've seen posters touting poached Penn State recruits in this and other threads recently. I'd be careful doing that.

I didn't look it up but I think it is entirely possible we have been to the Final Four more in the past thirty years than PUS has been to the NCAA tournament. It's at least close. Point is, Sandusky U sucks (No pun intended. Well, maybe a little.)

Don't boast on beating out PED U for recruits. Most of you posters on here are more knowledgeable fans than this. You're lowering the bar and trying talk yourselves into thinking some of the players in this recruiting class are better than they actually are.

I hope they all work out well. I'm just tempering my expectations.

And, yes, I am a PU hater. More from a football perspective.

Those are the final rankings from last year. Daquan Jeffries, former Edmond Santa player, ended up the year ranked #7. He was unknown going in to the season, but played well enough to move up the list. Daquan played in a more competitive league than NOC did. Jeffries headed to Tulsa. Thanks for the contact info to the NJCAA.

By far from an unknown... had a good freshmen year at ORU.
