2019 NCAA Coaching Carousel Thread

Mike Anderson fired at Arkansas. Huge mistake for them. He is a great coach.

I'd have Anderson at OU in a heartbeat.

Arkansas is targeting Kelvin Sampson as their #1 target.

Kelvin can do way better than Arkansas. Those hillbillies don’t deserve him.

Man I definitely don't agree with you on that. He has been a power conference coach for 13 seasons at two programs with pretty good history, and he has made the tourney six times and only advanced past the first weekend once. I see nothing about that that indicates great, or even very good. His results would make him far worse than any OU coach in recent decades except Capel. I'm curious what it is specifically that you like about him.

UAB went to 3 straight NCAA Tournaments under Anderson. 2003, 2004, and 2005. In the 13 years since he left they have been once.

He went 77-29 his last 3 seasons at Missouri, including Big 12 Championship and 3 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. In the 8 years since he left they have been totally irrelevant.

They've had seasons of 9-23, 10-21, 8-23, 12-15, etc.

Frank Haith did well with Mike Andersons players the year he left, but its mainly been a dumpster fire of a program since.

The last 4 years at Arkansas he had teams of 27-9, 26-10, 23-11...

This year they were 18-16, which isn't good but they lost a bunch of all-conference guards.

They lost to Texas on a buzzer beater... Lost to WKU by 1... Lost to LSU in OT... Lost to Texas Tech by 2... Lost to Missouri by 1... Lost to Kentucky by 4 (in a game that was 1 point game with 12 seconds left)...

I know you have to win the games... but when you are coming off 26-10 and 23-11 seasons and lose 6 games at the wire with a really young team, I think you deserve another year.

As for Anderson at OU... he has done well at total trash programs. UAB and Missouri have had no success without him, and he did pretty well at a dead Arkansas program.

I like his style of play, and I think he would do really well at a better program like OU. Just personal opinion...

Wow, so he won 27, 26, 23, and 18 games the last four years, and got canned? That is dumb.

I really think Kelvin might stick at UH, pretty much regardless of any offers he gets. I could really only see him taking a legit top 5-10 type job, or maybe something "back home." Though since his dad has passed away, probably not much reason to do that (ie, move nearer where he was).

He has a REALLY good thing at UH. UH took a chance on him, and let him hire the staff and support staff he wanted. They threw a bunch of money at the program. They return some pretty solid players.

I think he stays.

Last 5 seasons:

27, 16, 26, 23, 18.

Averaged 22 wins per year over last 5. And again, lost 6 games at the wire this year with a young team.

Also won games against Indiana (by 1), Texas St. (by 3) and lost to a terrible Texas A&M team that fired their coach as well. Even with a young team, this year could have looked that much worse as easily as it could have looked a little better.

People on here keep screaming for consistency from Kruger’s program and claim he’s “lost it” or he’s not the “right fit” because of that issue but are arguing that a guy that won 16 after a 27 win season is ok? Maybe the AD at Arkansas agrees with a lot of the posters here that feel Kruger’s time is on the way down and he feels the same about Anderson after going from 26 to 23 to 18?

I’m not saying it’s the right thing to do but it’s an argument worth making if the AD feels the program is headed in the wrong direction.

That’s with a SOS around 60 from what I could find :)

I thought Anderson did a good job at UAB and Mizzou. That team in 08-09 was great, and the program collapsed pretty quickly after he left. Not very impressed with his work at Arkansas, though. 2 NCAA wins and 3 appearances in 8 years isn't great work. We could do worse, but we could also do a lot better. He's not a dream hire like Kelvin or Buzz.

Also Kelvin isn't going to Arkansas unless they break the bank A&M style. He's in a great spot for him, and Houston can afford to pay him. I also think he wants to pass the job on to Kellen, and there's little chance of that if he bolts for Arkansas right now.

Agreed.

Big 12: No changes to date. Really do not expect any at this time.

Five potential options to be Alabama's next men's basketball coach
https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.co...abamas-next-mens-basketball-coach/3275380002/

They list:
  • Thad Matta, former Ohio State HC
  • Chris Beard, Texas Tech HC
  • Gregg Marshall, Wichita State HC
  • Mick Cronin, Cincinnati HC
  • John Brannen, Northern Kentucky HC

“Today’s climate in men’s college basketball is very unique. In fact, there are ongoing legal issues with the FBI, as well as ongoing NCAA investigations. And we don’t know how all that will play out at this point,” Byrne said. “That said, we’re going to be very thorough throughout this process. We want to make sure we keep the University of Alabama’s reputation at the forefront of what we do.”

These statements appeared to unequivocally dismiss rampant online speculation that Alabama might pursue deposed former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino. The 66-year-old Pitino is currently coaching overseas for a EuroLeague team in Greece after being fired with cause in late 2017 when he was implicated in a “pay-for-play” scandal uncovered by the FBI.

Another candidate seemingly out of the running is Iowa State's Steve Prohm, an Alabama alum that served as a manager for five years under former Crimson Tide coach David Hobbs. Prohm received a contract extension Tuesday to remain with the Cyclones through 2025.

Arkansas Tidbit: Mike Anderson and Lou Holtz are the only two coaches ever fired in football or basketball at Arkansas without a single losing season.

Not sure how interested Beard, Marshall, or Cronin would be. Other two probably would be though.

Has Bama ever been good at hoops for any kind of extended period of time?

I think Matta is an underrated coaching candidate. He had a bad stretch there at the end of his tOSU run, but he was phenomenal until that point.

Thad Matta = Rick Barnes. Sometimes, guys just need a change of scenery.

Arkansas used to be a top-notch program but they haven't made the Sweet 16 in 23 years.

The people who complain about Kruger should take a look around at some of the other programs & realize that we've got it pretty good.

Just in the region I would point to Arkansas, Mizzou, Colorado, ok state, and Memphis... All in a hole.

That being said... I expect OSU to be really tough next season.

Bama hired the Buffalo coach and UNLV has a new hire.
Still can;t understand Danny Manning having a job.
Do you think Nevada's early NCAA exit has taken some of the shine off Musselman's chances for upward mobility?
Some other programs need new blood but perhaps the buyouts prohibit changes.

Intriguing hire. Oats did very well at Buffalo.

Me either. There might be a worse P5 coach in the country, but I sure can't think of them.

I'm thinking UCLA or stay put. Kelvin has proven he can win in Houston, and don't see him taking any of the available jobs outside of UCLA. The Bruins may go for a younger, dynamic hire who can recruit better than Kelvin - but I seriously doubt they will find a coach better than Kelvin. If I were them, he'd be at the top of my list.
