Around the Big 12

yesterday is the first game of yours i have watched .. and your first against a legit oponent

1 bench guy played over 10 min .. griffin with 13 and then shine played 9 ..

you got 2 points 6 boards off the bench .. and played all the starters but hickey 30 min +

I saw that, too, Boulder. OSU's starters are impressive. But unless a couple of players on their bench don't step up, they're in for a long season. You can't get through a season by playing your starters most of the game. If the players on the bench don't develop soon, the starting five will wear down eventually.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Lots of teams (including OU) display a lot of depth early in the season vs. inferior competition, but by the time conference play rolls around, the rotation gets tightened up significantly.

For OSU, I could easily see Newberry and Allen relegated to less significant roles (as evidenced by their minutes vs. OSU northwest). That doesn't necessarily mean they won't be a more well-rounded team this season, but I think the description of their depth above may be a little overblown.

Favored by 13, won by 13.

Bench guys got plenty of minutes. 12 guys played. So far a pretty good defensive team.

Yes, but Boulder's point is that no one except Griffin played more than 9 minutes. Four subs off of the bench got clean up minutes, 1 to 4. The other point he made is that there was little or no production from anyone on the bench.

That may change in time, as the back ups develop their game. It's just that quality depth appears to be a problem right now.

It was odd that Ford limited the playing time of the big subs Allen and Solomon. However it should be noted that one of our usual subs Carroll started because Hammond was out with an ankle injury.

I think you guys need to watch or look at the box score of more than one game.

Yeah, for whatever reason, the bench didn't contribute that much against Oregon State, but that game has been the outlier. Last night, against the best team we've played this year, we got 20 minutes (and 10 points) from Tavarius Shine, 13 minutes from Mitchell Solomon, 9 minutes from Leyton Hammonds (in his first game back from injury) and 8 minutes from Griffin.

Look, I'm not saying we're Kentucky or anything... I'm just saying that we actually do have some guys on the bench who are good players who can contribute...unlike the last few years when we've been rolling cast offs and walk ons out there.

I think it is quite possible OSU will be better this season. I haven't been paying much attention to them. What happened to Burton?

I watched most of last night's game against Tulsa. Shine looked good. The other three players on your list did not. A combined 3 points and 3 rebounds between them wasn't enough to impress me.

What's up with Burton and Soucek? Wasn't Burton touted to be a great get? As I recall, Soucek was an important role player late last season, yet he didn't see the floor until mop up time when the game was virtually over at the half. Griffin, on the other hand, who was the only sub to log double digit minutes against Oregon State, saw his minutes cut to only 8 last night.

Are you scratching your head trying to figure out how Travis determines who plays and who sits? I sure am.

Soucek is terrible. That's part of my point... He was a major contributor off the bench last year. He's not going to see any meaningful minutes this year unless there's a rash of injuries. Same with Sager. He was the number one guy off the bench last year for crying out loud.

Burton has just been outplayed by Carroll, Hammonds and Shine.

I don't think it's s big mystery what's going on right now. Ford just has a bunch of new guys and he's going with whomever is playing well on a given night. That's part of what I'm saying... He has that luxury for probably the first time.
