At this point Kruger gets a D at best.

Blaming Joe C for the current state of the men's basketball program is absurd. Joe has tried everything within his power to promote the men's basketball program at Oklahoma. Since the Student Body and the local community don't give a dayum about men's basketball at OU, what would you like Joe to do? He fired JC and brought in one of the best college basketball coaches in the country.

He should have fired Capel before last season b/c it was obvious that last season was going to be a rebuilding season and to fire someone after a rebuilding season just showed me that Joe C showed no support for Capel. And b/c of that, we have to go thru another crappy season. Kruger didn't bring in anyone that we couldn't do w/o. A PG that can't shoot and a big man that gets no minutes. And so far, I'm not impress with any of his recruits that he has committed. They all seem like they are going to need a year or 2 before they become contributors.

Recruiting was basically over when LK was hired last year. He did bring in the Wyoming kid that will be eligible next year. Grooms is a decent player but limited.

It's going to take time, OU is not exactly attractive to five star recruits right now. The 2013 class is a big one for OU, we'll see where we are in a couple of years.

We don't need 5 star recruits to win a bunch of ball games at OU. Haven't we learned that lesson yet?

We don't need 5 star...but we do need top 100 talent to win in the big 12. Were not going to get back to where we want to be with the Neals, Arent's and Grooms in the world.

I would like him to make more of an effort to get people to attend games. I would have liked him not to release Damion James and Scottie Reynolds before they met Capel. I would have liked him to spend the money on a good coach rather than hire Capel.

I don't know why OU fans have such a love for Joe C. He is a good administrator but he isn't a savior. He didn't find Coach Stoops, he hired someone to find coach Stoops and Boren was the one that said OU would win at football.

Overall I give Joe C a good grade because of football but he really hasn't done much for the other OU sports programs.

No you don't. OU rarely signed top 100 talent under Tubbs or the first several years under Sampson. Maybe one a year and they were usually kids from Oklahoma. Since OU made the improvements with the practice court, they have signed much higher rated high school kids and really haven't gotten much out of them. I have zero problem with Top 100 kids and would love OU to get players like KU but historically that has not been the key to OU's success in basketball.

What other programs are you talking about? I think Sheri Coale was around before Joe C. But let's look at his resume:
Bob Stoops - Arguably the best collegiate football coach of the past decade
Jeff Capel - Led OU b-ball to the Elite 8
Sunny Galloway - Made OU baseball relevant again.
Lon Kruger - No matter the struggles with this year's squad, we will still finish better than most people thought preseason and it's his first year.

So what other OU programs are you talking about?

Castiglione can't be given credit for hiring Golloway. If you'll remember we had the humiliating episode with Gene Stephenson and after he backed out Golloway was hired by default.

Stop hating on Joe C. He is doing the best he can under the circumstances. If it wasn't for Joe C, the football program would have died.

Oh, Sid. Your passive aggression is so hard to spot.

The key to OUs success was having great players and bringing in top recruits. Well OU hasn't been lately and now we are 2nd to last in the big 12 while Baylor, ISU, K-st, OSU, etc...(except for T.T. who is dead last) are ahead of us.

Its not a fluke that ISU is going to be back in the ncaa tournament this year since they have a great player on their team surrounded by solid recruits. Baylor is ranked in the top 10 b/c they have been bringing in 5 star recruits.

I don't care what the history of OU shows you...this is the present and the present has NBA kids force to go to college for a year. And if were not bringing in those kids or any of the other top 100 kids but our competition is then we are going to be at the bottom of the big 12 til that happens.

That is ridiculous and the fact that OU fans act like the AD is beyond criticism is just weird. Under joes watch OU has gone on probation inat least three sports. He flat out lied about drinking in the new stadium. I personally read the promotional materials and the AD sold the Club Level with alcohol as part of the deal. He has made his fair share of mistakes.

With that said, I still give him a passing grade because the AD is in the black and football got better under his watch. I just don't have the love affair with the guy that some OU fans seem to have.

Check Sid's history Denver. He HATES Joe C. Pretty sure sarcasm was the order of the day, in his post......:):)

For whatever it's worth, I know there were plenty of people in Columbia who weren't sorry to see him leave.

How does anyone fall for el Sid's act?

What programs have not improved or excelled under Joe C?

Despite the current state of MBB they have still reached the final four & 3 elite 8's during his time. Who else in the Big 12 can say that? Quick hint, it ain't Mizzou, OSU, or Texas.

WBB has made it to multiple final fours.

Baseball has improved steadily, I know I enjoyed my trip to Omaha 2 years ago.

Softball has turned into a perennial power and won a NC.

Wrestling has a top 5-10 team every year.

Football.

Volleyball has been consistently ranked in the top 25 (I think).

Mens cross country and track are top 5-10.

Womens track finished in the top 5 this year, top 10 last year. Both achievements represent program firsts.

Men's and Women's golf are top 25 programs.

Mens and Womens Tennis are top 25 programs.

Gymnastics are a dynasty.

Soccer sucks.

What else am I missing?

Plus he has done a solid job of fundraising, upgrading & building new facilities. Implementing Heisman park, negotiating the new Fox/OU alliance, etc.

Virtually every sport at MU is better now than it was when Castiglione left.

Facilities are on a completely different level. So is fundraising. The overall health of the athletic department — financially, athletically, and academically — is on a completely different level.

Castiglione's done some good things at OU. But his accomplishments at MU were minimal. Basketball was the only program do really do anything noteworthy during Castiglione's time here, and that was all Norm.

I have no idea how he should be judged by OU fans (and don't really even care) but I know Alden's done significantly more at MU than Castiglione ever did.

Doesn't change the fact that the majority of MU supporters were upset when he left. To insinuate otherwise is revisionist history. I remember the outcry quite well.

You would obiously know more about Missouri athletics than anyone on this board, so I'm not doubting you. With that said, Joe C is easily the best AD OU has had in the 40 or so years I've been following the Sooners.

No, he's not perfect. Most of his mistakes, though, have been with the Men's Basketball program which is why there are some negative posts about him. Even with his mistakes, the fact OU had one of the highest Men's Basketball recruiting budgets in the country last year is a strong indication he's taking a proactive approach to getting this program back to where it was during the Tubbs / Sampson years.

I believe the hiring of Lon Kruger will pay great dividends, and we'll start seeing those results next year. I thought we would see some this year, but that didn't materialize...but I have no doubt it will happen.

I'm kind of a Joe C fan myself. He seems to be a hard working, do it the right way guy with high standards. He went out on his own bucking the local wisdom when he hired Capel. It turned out to be a big mistake. He most likely won't make one like that again. And of course the last baseball coaching hiring process didn't look to pretty either. But, he is a good one.

I don't fault Joe C. for hiring Capel. At the time the hire was made, I thought it was an excellent hire. We grabbed a young, up and coming coach, who had coaching experience, came from a basketball family and played at a basketball powerhouse, and was known as a good recruiter. I really thought that might be the way to get OU to the next level, instead of hiring a good coach that was say, older, and might have had a lower ceiling.

Capel didn't work out. And while it would have been tough to fire him 1 year removed from an Elite 8 trip, that is probably when it should have happened.
