Bad coaching by Lon

You may be correct...But you have say he has done pretty good with the talent on this team.

Nah, didn't affect the game that much. Our point guard missed 3 free throws at the end of the game and Spangler takes a 3 point shot and I could go on and on and on. Many mistakes our players made and if you are going to be the point guard with the ball in your hands you HAVE to make free throws. Lon can't make them himself and I promise you he didn't want his center jacking a 3.

That and he should have used his timeouts earlier to manage the game better, and get the starting 5 some rest. Woodard and Cousins looked tired which sacrificed their play on defense.

I agree with this post 100%. Was okay for a minute or two around the four minute timeout to give everyone an extended breather...but not for as long as he did. It got out of hand too quickly.

Lon's only taken 5 different teams to the NCAA's, lol. Come on you guys and gals, Lon is a GREAT coach and none of you all know why he stayed with that group - could have been injuries/attitudes/etc. We could go back to having Jeff who couldn't coach his way out of a sack. I'll take Lon's decisions over internet posters ALL day, lol. Is he perfect? NO. Do you all know what was going on with the other players and why he left them in? HECK NO. So guess all you want but remember who is one of the best coaches in the country.

Guys, you don't give up a 14 pt lead with less than 5 mins to go in the 1st half and come out on top. LTech, knew at that time they could beat us and that is what they did. We took bad shots both halves, turn the ball over way to many times at very critical times, while some say the coaching was questionable, the coaches are not on the court.

Now for the good of this game, these kids are now ready for conference play because of this overtime loss. They will learn from their mistakes and take it to texass.

Happy New Year to all you Sooners!

Tubbs said many times OU was turning down good shots to take bad shots and that is what OU will learn from tonight. Lon was trying like crazy to point this out - you could tell by watching him on the sidelines during free throws and time outs. Sometimes you have to let the players feel the pain of a loss to understand what coach is telling you should be followed and followed immediately.

I'm pretty good at my job, but I have bad days. This was a bad day for Lon, as well as the players.

I have a story. Before practice the 1st day after the UTA game I asked coach Kruger a question. I said, "last season the team didn't start improving and getting good until after the SFA loss. Can this team make the same kind of improvement off of a close win?''

He said, "that is the goal. That is always the goal. But, unfortunately, sometimes you have to lose."

Bingo. I thought Clark must have been in foul trouble because he sat him so long at the end of the half. It was obvious from my seat at the game that the players were gassed. Badly needed a time out.

I agree with the poster below. Some days you just aren't at your best.

No Hornbeak killed us too. Woodard wasn't very good in the 1st half and Beak could have spelled him.

Exactly. Lon didn't have his best game coaching today. I've always thought that he tries to save his timeouts too often instead of using them to calm the team down and stop a run. Even really good coaches make mistakes sometimes.

You can always expect a post like this after a loss.

We lost the game because we went too much one on one and took really tough shots under pressure. And because we didn't handle their ball screens very well. And our freshman point guard had what I hope is his worst game of the year.

Not that Kruger is a perfect coach by any means but I'm a little reluctant to pull out the got outcoached card every time we lose.

What is the deal with Kruger in Overtime games? He is now 0-4 at OU. Capel was 7-0 in overtime games at OU. When it went to overtime you always felt we would win. Now it seems like overtime games never go our way even at home against LTech

I agree. Sometimes, a freshman point guard is going to play like ....................... a freshman point guard.

You can have a bad game coaching without being outcoached. I am not sure I would say Lon outcoached in this game. We seemed to always have a plan, players did not always execute. I think LA TECH players wanted it more and were making there open shots.

I missed the first half but I tend to think one big reason OU lost that game was Hornbeak's injury. It makes OU thin when OU has foul trouble. There were certainly others such as a few key missed free throws, turn overs, some bad shot selection and poor defense.

He did that in the UTA game. Not having Cousins is where this really hurts. Anytime he pulls Spangler and Clark out at the same time right now, the opposing team goes on like a 10-0 run. Not bashing Lon though. He's done a fantastic job this year, and even the best coaches make a mistake or two. Hindsight's 20/20. Although, I don't know how else he can get them rest unless he just makes a point to not rest both at the same time. This loss leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, so I know it does with the team, but luckily this isn't football and they have real opportunity to make this game a distant memory with the next five games coming up.

BTW, I was REALLY impressed with the crowd last night. I think that's why this loss stings a little more to me. Haven't seen that good of a crowd in a long time for a game against a regular team (i.e. not Kansas, OSU, or Texas).
