Baylor at OU

Doubling Sims with Griffin was...how do I say this politely...not a good move. Griffin needs to be in the paint. She darn sure isn't in position for a rebound 25 feet from the basket. She can help clog the middle on defense and close some easy interior passing that Davis benefitted from. Plus, she isn't quick enough to stop Sims anyway.

In general, our zones suck. We give up open shots and dribble penetration.

We were closing the gap with Griffin and Kaylon in the game together and as soon as she took one out the lead opened quickly.

Those are just a few of the things I didn't understand.

Edit to say: Aaryn and Campbell would not have fouled out when they did if Sherri would have substituted.

Yet Sims was kept in check and only had 12 points at the half using that strategy. I thought it was a good move, however when Sharane picked up her 2nd foul, she should have brought Kellogg in to try to stop Davis from getting every rebound.

Once again i said after the Gonzaga game we should start Griffin and Kaylon but everybody disagree with me.

Sherri has only used that combination very sparingly all year. But, I have seen us do some good things when both are in the game together.

But with Griffin out front we were not doing a good job of defending the interior or getting rebounds. Sims wasn't necessarily killing us scoring but others were as they had a pretty nice lead at the half. Doubling Sims makes sense with guards but not a center.

That combination won the Gonzaga game by getting defensive rebounds and stopping easy shots in the paint. And we just saw how good they play against Baylor.

It's plain to see by looking at the box score that offensive rebounding absolutely killed us in the game! Baylor had 16 to our 6, and took 73 attempts at the basket to our 56. Add the early foul trouble with Vegas, Gioya and Sharane each saddled wit 3 fouls at halftime, and it is a recipe for a perfect storm. Further contributing to our first half deficit of 16 points is the fact that we hit a puny 7-12 from the charity stripe in the first half to Baylor's 13-16. 58% to 81%. Bad, bad BAD. No excuse for not being able to hit a high percentage of an unguarded shot!

Gotta love what this board has become. An upset win over a top 15 gets a 43 post game thread with maybe 10 or 12 of them positive. A very intense loss to a top 10 gets a 125 post game thread with 4 maybe 5 of them somewhat positive and one of those was about Hook by the Baylor fan. I know you see a lot more from the easy chair and looking at the box score than you do when you are actually at the game. FWIW, I think Sherri tried real hard to get a T tonight; maybe the official was afraid it would fire up our team and lead to a comeback win. You guys have fun; I guess I just needed to vent.

In the twelve years I have been a season ticket holder, there have only been two games that our girls have played that I left the game early. The Andrea Riley game at OSU when we lost, and tonight. It had nothing to do with our players or Coach Coale. I don't like to use the term "Worst officiated game", but this one really ranked right up there. We could barley touch the bears, but they could go over the back on rebounds and we can't get a call. Napier is an embarrassment to officiating and I really wished someone would have given Sherri a T.

I left with about five minutes left and just got tired of watching our kids get abused by an inept officiating crew. Sure we had four straight turnovers during a stretch that could have put us in the game. Sims is by far the best I have seen this year. Our free throw shooting was an abomination, but we certainly didn't need the officials to pile on too. This is not sour grapes by any means, but Baylor is not that good, or really all that talented. However that are tough, and play hard. They will also play to the level that the officiating crew will let them. I see no reason what so ever why an official should be intimidated by Mulkey. Officials should control the game equally for both teams, and punish those coaches who go outside the side of decency. Why they don't is beyond me. I gained a little more respect for this group of Sooners tonight. When they got down 21 they could have thrown in the towel, but they came out the second half and showed some guts and grit. I hope this game pisses them off and they can play with equal passion and run the table. They showed me they can, and I am proud they didn't give up in spite of having to play against 8 on the floor tonight.

Unfortunately, most boards are like you described in your first 3 sentences. They love to tell you they just need to 'vent'. Running around the block 2 or 3 times would be a much healthier way to 'vent'.

This team is a mystery to me.

They look real sharp at times and at other times they make careless turnovers, take wild shots and just play awful. And with three seniors and a junior starting. Maybe they will put it together but they got to do it soon. We could be looking at as many as 5 more losses.

We have career highs one game and nothing the next.

I agree with some that the officiating was borderline stupidy. Worse than inept. Of course none of the calls were as bad as the one against Wyatt last game where she was on the floor with the ball and had a foul called on her.

Totally agree!

I thought overall that was Edwards best game. She played good defense, scored 9 points, 6 rebounds, only 1 turnover and 1 foul. Very good job!

That may well have been the worst call I've ever seen.

Commentators love to say 'Never foul a jump-shooter.' I would add something to that. Never foul a jump-shooter, but if you are going to, get your money's worth and make sure they don't hit the shot.

Agreed, two really nice performances back to back against good competition. Looks like she is starting to come into her own and giving us some really solid minutes.

Regardless of the officiating and how much we can not stand Mulkey, we shoiuld be beating Baylor this year. We have everyone back except JoAnna and they lost everybody except Sims. Manning would have probably started for us but Baylor lost their potential second best player for the season in Alexis Prince. Who should be 5-5 in the conference and who should be leading the Big 12 with only one loss? Is Mulkey a better coach than Coale or a better recruiter?

I also left early. The officiating was terrible, and I did not want to yell what I was thinking. The players played with a lot of heart and grit....but.
A senior fouled a 3 point shooter after the ball had left her hand by jumping into her, again. Time after time, we let Baylor offensive rebounders get rebounds because we didn't block out. Not sure how many points in the paint Baylor got, but they had a lot of uncontested inside baskets on penetrate and then feed inside to ladies wide open under the basket without proper defensive rotation-going to happen some, but we did it way too much.
We seem to not play smart too often, and fail to stay with good fundamentals way too much.
Also, a lot of good from Edwards and big improvement lately from Carter. Derica Wyatt does a lot of good sound basketball stuff all the time, and all of these freshmen should be big contributors in the near future.

Hate to say because I don't like Mulkey, but she seems to be better at both than S Coale.

Our girls fought hard and almost got there before a late onslaught by Baylor. However, these girls just don't play smart and Sherri's defensive decision to zone a lot of the game just killed us.

Finally, when your 5-10 Strong forward and your 2 guard are the best rebounders on the team, then you've got a serious problem -- and we've had it all year long because Sherri has failed to find enough quality bigs to allow us to go with Griffin and Williams together.

I love that the girls keep trying hard most of the time. I still think Sherri's a great coach.

This just isn't going to be a great year for us. I see great improvement in some potentially great guards for us. I see leadership and fire from Sharane that I hope will become an infectious addition with the other girls.

I think, good coach as she is, Sherri may have come to the point that she spends the off-season really going after some help for next year and I think she may begin to decide some changes are needed starting with her.

It's helped Bob, obviously. Maybe she will see the benefits too.

I don't expect much for the rest of this season, just some good hard play. If we make the tournament that won't be a surprise if we don't that won't be surprise either. If we get knocked out early. That's to be expected I think.

If we make it to the Sweet 16 then it was a miraculous finish by these girls.

I'm not giving up on this season, but I'm excited about the prospects for something really different next year.

I just don't get all the berating of Sherri and our players. I can understand from a fans point of view being disappointed or upset but dang... I can't believe how many people here want to tear down our team. There is a difference between constructive criticism and an absolutely negative beat down. I don't think Sherri gets out coached every game like some do or that our players are as bad as some seen too. I see potential and think they may still end up surprising some folks down the road.

My thoughts exactly! Great post!
