Beard to Texas

the only difference between Self and Beard success is that Mario Chalmers hit his big shot and Culver missed his.

Well, that and the fact that the past two years, Beard has delivered the kind of results that posters on this board ragged on Kruger for. There's definitely a double standard at play there.

Surely you can't be serious. How many times has Self finished in the second half of the Big XII and won less than 18 games? Better yet, since you imply his success is because he is at KU, how many times in his career?

The answer: he has never finished less than 3rd in conference in his career, including stops at ORU, TU, and Illinois, and only won less than 18 games his first two years of coaching when at ORU. He has won his conference 19 out of 24 years he has coached.

Beard finished with 18 wins and 6th place or worse 3 of 5 years at Tech. And is now earning about $2MM more than Self.

I really thought Lon and Kevin were going to delete their burner accounts once they left. Guess not.

Sorry, but Beard ran circles around Lon since his arrival 5 years ago. There's really no other way to see it.

Here they come. The signal has been sent.

And don't forget that Beard posted a tidy little 7-3 record against us while in Lubbock. He wasted no time moving that program right past ours.

Texas basketball just got a whole lot more boring for their fans.

Did you ever actually watch any of UT's games while Shaka was there? Tech played at a faster pace than Texas for 3 of the last 4 seasons. Shaka's Texas teams have mostly been painful to watch. For that matter, the way Texas played under Rick Barnes even during his successful years wasn't always easy on the eyes. Winning is a lot less boring than losing, regardless of the style.

If he lands the recruits Shaka did, then those recruits are going to hate how slow his style is, and how much he demands on the defensive end.

This post doesn't make much sense. Shaka was also demanding on defense, and Texas was generally very good on D under him. (His offenses were mostly mediocre to bad, especially at the end of close games, and they sucked at FT shooting most of the time.)

Going more than a little too far there. Self is far more proven and accomplished than Beard.

Lol, I would take Bill Self without even blinking.

You'd have to go back to his 2nd year as a head coach to find the last time he lost 9 games in conference.

Chris Beard went to an elite 8 and then a NCG in his 2nd year at Tech, and has since gone 18-13 and 18-11 going 9-9 in league play and 9-8 in league play.
And while the last post I quoted was over the top, this comparison is pretty weak and lacking in context as well. Self took over a premier job that had just lost the NC game by 3 points. Beard coached at Texas Tech.

We all knew this was coming. Good hire for texas. Beard is a good coach. It remains to be seen how good he will be at texas.

This doesn’t really change anything for OU. We have to hire the right coach or we’ll continue to be in 7-10th place regardless of who is coaching at texas.

He wasted no time moving that program right past ours.

This season, Tech finished one seed spot ahead of OU, with the same conference record as OU. Last season, Tech finished two spots behind OU, with the same conference record.

Yeah, you are proving my point. Beard's style is slow, just like Shaka played at Texas. Their fans hated it, their star recruits didn't like it either. It's one the reasons Texas struggled to win.

Yeah, I expect Beard's Texas's teams to do well on defense, just like Smart's. I don't see Beard being a massive upgrade over Shaka Smart, and he's definitely not Bill Self.

Yes, Bill Self went to a program already established, and he's done exactly what he did at Tulsa, Illinois, etc. he won. That's what he does, win. He may cheat to get recruits to do it, but he wins. Just because Beard went to a NCG 1 year doesn't put him on that level. If it does, then I guess Lon Kruger is on that level as well since he took OU to the final four, which isn't Kansas either.

a final four where you lose by 40 and a NCG where you lose in overtime is not the same thing

Anyone trying to minimize this hire is out of their mind. After their national title appearance, yes.....Tech has come back to the pack the last two seasons. But Beard is a helluva coach. And to intimate or insinuate that Beard's last four/five years are comparable to Lon isn't fair to either coach.....because there is no comparison. Texas is significantly better with him on the sidelines.

So what you're saying is that over the past 5 years (Beard's tenure), Lon's best is comparable to Beard's worst?

Yep.... the people who have chosen to die on Kruger hill completely ignore context... Tech, as a program, sucks compared to OU. He moved that program past OU. He played in a national title game for crying out loud.

He was at Tech for 5 years... finished 1st in the league once and played in a national title game. At Texas Tech.

He also went 7-3 against OU in the last 10 outings between the two schools.

AT TEXAS TECH.

This is OU basketball... Some of you are forgetting that.

i like Lon but i agree with stormspencer as well.

UT hoops got a good coach in Beard. i have some suspicions about the guy, personally, but impressed with his coaching.

meanwhile, we certainly weren't after Beard or IU's hire. Joe C should be number one cat on the block.

You know as well as I do that since we last played in the Final Four, TTech has been noticeably better than us...playing for the National Championship plus an Elite Eight appearance...pretty impressive for that school. Hopefully, Texas hiring Beard will motivate Joe C to up his game a little so we can at least continue to beat them one out of two games.

I’m a superstitious guy...and since I said on this board that Shaka Smart was a great hire for Texas, I’ll say it again. Chris Beard was a great hire for Texas 🙂.

And you may be forgetting how bad a shape we were in when Lon took over, on and off the floor.
