Bedlam Round 1: OU at OSU

The player that enabled OSU to win, Loryn Goodwin, is a 5-9 transfer from UTSA. Last year at UTSA, she scored 17.5 ppg. This year, she is averaging 22.4 ppg at a big school with more competition. Then, let's look at how she actually did.

Last year, she was 38.0% from the field, 27.4% from three, and 69.1% from the free throw line. Why would you go after a player who was a 27.4% three points shooter and hit less than 70% from the line against lesser competition? OSU needed a guard. We really didn't. We were looking at finding a Jacobson who Notre Dame seems to have gotten a waiver to play without sitting out a year. We needed size, not a rather average shooter for a UTSA level school.

This year at OSU, she is hitting 46.9 from the field and 32.0% from three. She is still only 67,83 from the line, even after hitting 9 of 10 against us. Prior to yesterday, she was shooting 65.7 from the line. Her FG% is up, and her scoring is up. But, she also just flat out had a good game against us. She isn't as spectacular as she looked. But, she is the player that OSU needed. They had a Coleman and a Jensen inside with Holt behind them. If you remember last year, we beat them because they had no guard who could bring it up the floor against us, turnover city. Not only was it what they needed, she got better at shooting. We needed help inside. Wasn't there. If you didn't notice, we got some size in the recruiting class.

I think most coaches would disagree with you. In the Big 12 Goodwin is currently: #1 in scoring. #13 in rebounds. #4 in assists. #1 in steals. #2 in A/TO. Her best performances have come against the best teams on the OSU schedule.

Yes Goodwin is Good! This is also like her 3rd or 4th college team, just goes to show taking a GS would be a good way for OU to go if they are looking for a starting post next year...

Goodwin will be newcomer of the year for the big 12 and will be in the convo nationally however i think that is westbrooke or carter that it will
Come down to.

She is very good in how she controls most situations and that is huge at this level.

I think the stats speak for themselves.

She is very good.
She is:
46.9% from the field, 32% from three, 67.83 from the line, 22.4 ppg
Against us, she was all-world:
52.63%, 66.7%, and 90% for 31,

She isn't usually two of three from three or nine of ten from the line. She is an average free throw shooter who was red hot from everywhere.

You're right, O-State2009. Goodwin is spectacular. She usually has her best performances against the best teams. But I guess she decided to have one against us too.

Also, OSU's Braxtin Miller has been the best freshman I have seen in the Big 12. She is just fun to watch. She can drive to the rim, has a nice midrange game and can knock down big threes. She looks like a star in the making.

That is a massive boatload of points. Some ladies are going to have to step up big time. Unless the freshmen are gangbusters, I just can't see next season being much better than this one so far.

Looking at the number for Miller, Shay has a higher PPG avg, but Miller might have better numbers across the board, could be a close race for Freshmen of the year, but I think I would take Shay over Miller...

It will be a close race and too early to call right now. They do have a common opponent in UT:
Miller: 39 minutes. 23 points. 4 assists. 4 TO. 3 Reb.
Pellington: 15 minutes. 16 points. 3 reb. 1 assist. 2 TO.

I think it depends on what you are looking for in a player as to who you would take at this moment. I would take Miller obviously.. But with Goodwin, OSU doesn't need a Pellington.

Pellington isn’t a point guard

Well, I believe she was a PG in HS and was listed as a PG by most sites. And she runs the point for you guys. Also, I meant OSU didn't need a slasher/layup taker as that is provided by Goodwin (and Combs if she is healthy), not necessarily the position.

I Think playing point guard in high school isn't the same as College Aaryn Ellenberg comes to mind immediately, I noticed Shay also shared Point guard duties with team Canada over the summer, right now I think Manning is playing a Point Forward role...

Then tell me what position do you think Pellington is? Small forward? Shooting guard? Or just a positionless driver?

Ellenburg was a shooter regardless of position.

All I know is without Goodwin, we probably would have beaten OSU, that's how drastically she has affected their team. That being said it seems both ostate and ou will start over with just a couple key players coming back next season, should be interesting!

Whatever happened to Wheeler? I thought she was pretty good.

Wheeler has disappeared. She was paying out of position last year at PG (according to Littell and the OSU radio guys) out of necessity. She was supposed to be a starter at the 2 this year, but she hasn't been very good at all. Not sure what her issue is, but she appears lost on both ends of the floor when she gets in the game.

She might line up at Point guard, but she doesn’t have the normal point guard duties, OU has been playing with 3-4 guards for a while now, so she does play a little positionless I would say, if you watch the NBA you would see players like Ben Simmons or the Greek freak heading the ball a lot but they aren’t really point guards, Manning is playing a similar role for Ou...

Ana, Shay, or Gabbi can be seen guarding anywhere on the perimeter.

Right now, as Mac says, the point guards are Maddie and Penzo. Pellington is the designated driver. She doesn't distribute as much as she looks for an opportunity to create for herself. It may be that she is new to the team and doesn't know what to do as yet. Although she breaks down the defense, Shaina has fewer than two assists per game. The offense flows better with Penzo or Maddie out front.

Next year? Tatum is accustomed to being a distributor, as is Taylor. I think Sherri would like to see Shaina evolve into another DRob. DRob was somewhat similar as a freshman.

From what I have seen, Goodwin is the best player in the conference. However, someone from Texas or Baylor or Tynice Martin if she gets back real soon will probably be the Big 12 POY.

Re Fowler. Don't care what her numbers were. Any coach seeing her play should have wanted her.

And we were coming into the season with very questionable solutions at point. Gabbi is a spot up shooter and garbage scorer. Has little ability to penetrate and usually retreats when she does. Maddie could be more help elsewhere and makes too many turnovers off her penetrations with few assists from the point and Pellington untested.

Who is this "Fowler" you are referring to?
