Bedlam Round 1: OU at OSU

Shaina is shooting 51.7% from the field. It may be ninety percent layups, but every player in the nation would love to be able to get to the rim that easily.

DRob shot mostly layups, didn't hit 51.7%, and became a successful pro. I'm more concerned with her free throws. But, DRob had the same problem when she arrived. I'll be disappointed if she isn't hitting 80% by her senior year.

second quarter was just embarrassing the whole team should walk back to Norman including sherri.
And shaina needs to shoot 1000 shots every day after the season ends because right now she's a great ball handler and slasher who can't shoot except for layups

Yeah, she needs to shoot 10 foot jumpers in the lane every day until she has confidence that she can shoot and make them.

And then she needs to practice shooting free throws.

It's amazing to me that a pg can't do some of these things. Her whole game is getting to the bucket and shooting a layup.:o

Interesting numbers from the box score......

OSU played 8 players......the three reserves that came off the bench had a total of 19 minutes and scored 2 points.

OU played 9 players........the four reserves that came off the bench had a
total of 36 minutes and scored 1 point.

OSU was without starter Areanna Combs. She injured her knee in the prior game against UT but came back in and finished the game. TV said it was an "undisclosed injury" keeping her out. Other than her, those numbers will likely remain consistent for the Pokes.

Agree about vivi. Why would you continue to sit her when the game is getting away from you? If she gets her third foul but keeps you in the game, you at least have a better chance. If she ends up fouling out with lets say 6 minutes to play and you are only down 4, at least you have a chance. Stupid decision.

All bad decisions are stupid decisions after the fact. It's called 20/20. Unfortunately you have to make those decisions before the fact.

Sherri Coale doesn't do postgame interviews anymore?

I got to disagree.....

If you date a person for a few years and decide they are the one, you get married. Nine months later, they file for divorce....their fault?

I would think fault lies with both parties....and instead of sitting still, you got to go get some players...hopefully a transfer or juco.

Everyone acts like anyone can just go to the JUCO level and grab an elite player in April and everything will be just fine. That's not how it works at all and you guys know it. Castro for OSU was a JUCO player and she signed in November of last year. Does anyone think Dungee, Mulkey, or any of the coaches thought they would be transferring in November?

Yes, there is definitely blame to go around on both ends but look at each individual case. Dungee transferred at least 3 times in HS so is it really a surprise that she left as soon as something got hard? Then transfers to Arkansas and Mike Neighbors who is known for being a complete players coach. Now I don't know much about Mulkey, but she transferred to Rice with 2 of her HS teammates and back in her hometown. Could be as simple as being homesick.

Let's get over the whole transfer thing, it happens way too much in the women's game and OU was a big victim of it this year. I agree that it looks like Sherri's recruiting is picking up a little. We'll see if it gets better next year.

There are usually not postgame interviews for road games.

Not picking but no one on any team in America is not practicing free throws. I hear that suggestion every time we have someone miss a shot.. Maybe the question is whether she is shooting extra free shots. I have never heard of the women doing any extra work the way Buddy and Isaih did.

The player that enabled OSU to win, Loryn Goodwin, is a 5-9 transfer from UTSA. Last year at UTSA, she scored 17.5 ppg. This year, she is averaging 22.4 ppg at a big school with more competition. Then, let's look at how she actually did.

Last year, she was 38.0% from the field, 27.4% from three, and 69.1% from the free throw line. Why would you go after a player who was a 27.4% three points shooter and hit less than 70% from the line against lesser competition? OSU needed a guard. We really didn't. We were looking at finding a Jacobson who Notre Dame seems to have gotten a waiver to play without sitting out a year. We needed size, not a rather average shooter for a UTSA level school.

This year at OSU, she is hitting 46.9 from the field and 32.0% from three. She is still only 67,83 from the line, even after hitting 9 of 10 against us. Prior to yesterday, she was shooting 65.7 from the line. Her FG% is up, and her scoring is up. But, she also just flat out had a good game against us. She isn't as spectacular as she looked. But, she is the player that OSU needed. They had a Coleman and a Jensen inside with Holt behind them. If you remember last year, we beat them because they had no guard who could bring it up the floor against us, turnover city. Not only was it what they needed, she got better at shooting. We needed help inside. Wasn't there. If you didn't notice, we got some size in the recruiting class.

We do have a pretty good class coming in...but look who we lose... Vivi, Maddi, Gabbi and Williams.

Syb can tell us, I'm sure, but that's pretty much 3/4 or more or our per game scoring. You really expect freshmen or our soon-to-be sophomores to fill that void? I can't see that.

We have NO center and NO true 4 with any real college playing experience. I'm not even sure we really have a center, if you really want to know. We have 2 tall girls now and one coming in that is 6-2.

When you look at next season, Llanusa and Pellington will be the only real veterans we have.

I would say we are as likely to have 5 new people on the floor as we are just 2 or 3.

New kids could be great. But they haven't played college ball and can you name a player lately who has come to OU and dramatically improved in her time here? I can't.

Yes, I'm down on this staff and team -- because I've got no real reason that I can point to to be otherwise. Even if players are better we still have this coaching staff; once great but way past it's prime.

+1

However, I do think that the freshmen will be good. I think IF both Shaina and Ana stay and don't transfer out (I just have a feeling Shaina may transfer after this year, maybe because of Dungee and Mulkey, idk), they will only improve next season. Add in the raw talent of Williams that gives us the 3 most athletic, fast guards we've had at one time since the last final four team. Add in Lampkin, who I think will be surprisingly impressive and is probably very underrated and Veitenheimer, who looks like a taller, better version of Ortiz, then we may be a very good team by the end of next season. The only question mark I have about next years team is, like you say, our Center. Do we have a new commit? I saw some chatter about a 6'6" girl committing, hopefully Soares. If it is true and it is her, we should be very dang competitive. If not, we will play with Lampkin (hopefully instead of Simpson) as our 5 and just have a very fast, athletic team.

Any idea on who this supposed new commit is, if there is one? I hope it is indeed Soares, as I see she's #53 on Hoopgurlz and hasn't signed with anyone yet.

I just watched the game. Ugly is all I can come up with. If there’s any coaching going on for OU, I didn’t see it. In most things, you get back what you put into it. Apparently the coaches haven’t put much into it.

It’s depressing. Make a horrendous pass into the bleachers, pat your chest and say my bad and it’s all ok. Repeat it and it’s still ok. Miss a free throw and slap everybody’s hand. Miss the next one and shrug it off. Not in shape, have trouble getting back on defense, don’t go, who needs a rebounder. Oh, you leave a shooter wide open in the corner, rush over and collide with them after the shot so they can go to the line for 3 shots. Get your ass handed to you, no reason to get angry, show some emotion, it’s just a game.

All of this is what I saw. This team and this staff lose interest if things don’t go well. They will not make the tourney and everyone knows it.

I will not miss these seniors. I always support the players, but this group makes it hard to care. I would not call them competitors, they’re just players playing ball.

I’ll give this staff 1 more season. Another like this and my donation stops as will my attendance.

Nailed it on all points.

Lots of good points in this.
I hate the inability of the team the last few years to play hard EVERY game, and the repeat of same mistakes over and over again. Makes it hard to be a rooter for this team

61.8% of the points and 53.1% of the boards.

IMO, OU shows all the signs of a stubborn, getting older coaching staff that doesn't want to hit the road hard to recruit. IMO Sherri Coale is very lucky to be at OU, most other places would send her packing by now or at least would have made some changes in her salary. I'll keep saying it things will remain about the same or step or two backwards with this staff. Yes I look for some players to transfer out of the program again this year and some will again put the blame on the players. I will also add like I have in the past by saying I'm sure SC is a fine person but for as a coach these days her prime is gone and not likely to return.

I think we can be good next year... For once in a long time OU will have the best player on the court vs some teams, Madi Williams is that good, she’s been having some big scoring games this year, and was said to be one of the best defensive players in the 2018 class, only thing that could slow her down is she will probably be asked to play out of position and used at the 4 next year...
With Martin not playing yet for WVA the best underclassmen guard I have seen in the BIg12 is Shay, all she needs is a true point guard to play next to her and she should have an All BIg12 type of season next year..
OU does have a 6’5 kind in Aspen, but idk how good she is, and I would expect to see EJ playing over her... Dee Lampkins was said to be undersized by Sherri and from watching her highlight I think she is more of a face up 4/wing then a true rim protector...

Anyone that has been around the game enough knows that a true point guard will change the look of a team dramatically. I think you are right about Lampkin more of a 4 really more of what Maddie should be- difference Maddie can shoot the 3 but i think Lampkins quickness to the boards will be a huge lift. I don’t think the size factor is much when it comes to boards if you want a rebound you will go get it- look at the SEC they ya e a 5’11 kid leading their conference in boards. The big issue i think we have is we need a big to powerfully score and be a body on defense wearing down the others teams bigs. Honestly i think this team will be a great rebounding team next year - Madi lampkin and Shay and defensively i think you will be shocked at the quickness of Veitenheimer she is a close second as the top lockdown defender behind Madi. Her athleticism is there but it’s more her instinct to the ball. Things will turn for this team next season but we need another Vivi or two
