I watch a lot of golf and they quite often talk about best player to never win or never win a major and it got me to thinking where does the OU program rank among those who have yet to cut the nets down?

Yes, OU is the top men's basketball program to NOT have won a national title.

OU and Illinois are #1-2, in whatever order you want to put them.

Hopefully in 15 days its Illinois without a debate

Others besides OU and Illinois:

Mizzou (they've never even made a final 4)
LSU
Texas
Georgia Tech
Virginia
Pitt
WVU
Purdue
Notre Dame

I'm not saying those programs are as good as OU's but just trying to illustrate that there are a lot of really strong basketball schools and major universities that don't have CBB titles.

I think Illinois and Houston are the only schools with more Final Four appearances than OU (5 vs. 4) without winning the title. Houston hasn't been on the map since Guy Lewis retired, but most of us believe that will change shortly if Kelvin stays awhile. Regardless, it's difficult to not include them in the conversation with players such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Elvin Hayes...and 5 Final Four appearances in the past half-century.

Most NCAA tourney wins without a national title (if wikipedia is to be believed and I added this year's tourney results so far)

Illinois- 40
OU- 39
Notre Dame- 36
Texas- 35
Wisconsin- 35

Here is hoping that OU comes off that list before it has the dubious distinction of having the most tourney wins without a title.

Look at Mizzou. They have KC, St Louis, and Chicago. For them not to be competitive every year is absurd.

Yes, and MIZ...ZOU has won only 2 NCs in ANY collegiate sports! Baseball in 54 and track in 65.

I'd say Illinois is the clear #1 with their all-time win percentage and 5 Final Fours. OU is next.

After that it's hard to rank. Notre Dame has one of the better win percentages and a boatload of Sweet 16 appearances, but they only have a single FF. Texas has a surprisingly high all-time win percentage, a lot of tourney appearances, and 3 FFs. Purdue has been very solid, but they only have 4 EEs and 2 FFs. WVU has a solid all-time record but only 3 EEs and 2 FFs. UVA has 2 FFs but a weaker all-time record. LSU has 4 FFs and an even weaker all-time record. GTech's all-time record is bad. UH has 5 FFs but has been a nobody for more than 30 years. Mizzou has been solid, but I can't rank a program that has both zero FFs and an all-time win percentage outside of the top 50 over any of these others.

I'd rank the top 5 like this:

1. Illinois
2. OU
3. Texas
4. ND (could be #3 instead, if you can overlook the lack of FFs)
5. Purdue

Illinois not winning one with access to Chicago city talent is criminal.

Illinois' pipeline into Chicago is dead. It has been, ironically, since Lon Kruger was there. Many in Chicago blame Kruger for the fall of their program. He's not popular around here.

Wasn't Kruger the first Illini coach to snag Mr Basketball in Illinois 3 consecutive years? He left Self with a lot of talent.

Now, I can see Illini fans not liking Kruger for possibly not playing the game with the dirty Chicago coaches.

That would be my line of thinking as well. Lon Kruger is way too smart a man to not try to capitalize on the talent in the third largest city in America.
