Big12 coach of the year

While I would take Kruger everyday over Barnes if you look at the perspective of where the teams were projected and where they finished their is a strong case for Barnes as COY.

The coaches preseason B12 projections had OU tied for 5th with KSU. They projected Texas to finish 8th ahead on only Tech and TCU. OU had lost their top 3 scorers and 4 starters. Texas had lost their top 4 scorers and 4 starters.

Net, net Texas finished 5 spots higher than projected and OU finished 3 spots higher than projected. Hence the logic of picking Barnes. Now I concur that Barnes against Kruger head up OU will win an extra 2 of 10 games against Texas on coaching alone.

But this year Barnes' team over achieved more than did the Sooners. Consequently Kruger kind of does get screwed but Barnes earned COY.
.

The difference in what the two teams (over)achieved is not as stark as some posters have suggested.

texas tied for third so you could just as easily say they finished fourth, a four-spot jump from their preseason prediction. And OU was tied for fifth in the preseason rankings, so you could just as easily say we were picked for sixth, so we also finished four spots better than predicted.

This.

UT is much closer to 4th place than 2nd.

We don't have to like or agree with the selection of Barnes as COY but we cannot dispute its legitimacy. To attempt to use the worse case scenario of the preseason prediction process to justify that Barnes should not be COY is only a means of displaying our bias.

I think Kruger should be COY but Barnes selection is warranted with criteria used for selection. At least that is the consensus of the ten B12 coaches. Damn it.

Lon was robbed.Head to head sweep clinched the rase. According to Horns ,head to head is all that matters anyway. :D

Gallon had some issues but I don't recall him having character issues like the other 2 (TMG and WW). As I recall other than the fact Gallon accepted a handout from Capels asst coach he would have been welcomed back in the program.

gallon was coming back to OU .. but the NCAA wouldn't rule on his eligibility ..

and he did not want a dez bryant situation where they just took their time and didn't rule ..

and he didn't take a "handout" ... he got a loan from a 3rd party (with the ast coach knowledge) to get his high school transcripts released ..

Semantics

Both coaches deserve recognition for what they accomplished this season. Personally, I felt Barnes won the award (in the coaches eyes) for how well they played over 10 game span, not the entire conference slate. Seems like everyone gave him the award a couple weeks ago.

With that said, starting 0-2 in conference and rebounding like they did is impressive. Is it as impressive as being consistent as Kruger's teams was? Each side has a legit argument.

Honestly though, in the grand scheme of things, I doubt either is really too concerned about who won. They've had enough accolades in their career to worry about this.

I think this is about as close to the reason why Barnes was named COY, in leu of Kruger, than any listed here in this thread.

It's easier to move up 5 spots when you are picked 8th than it is to move 3 spots when you are picked 5th.

Fortunately Kruger's selection as AP COY provides Lon the recognition is aptly deserves and we no longer have to concern ourselves with Barnes selection by the coaches.
