Was reading an article about the Melo trade and all that junk and ran across this table showing off estimated wins a player adds.

This is the criteria for value
It’s actually pretty easy to build an equivalency between salary and value on the court. Collectively, the 30 N.B.A. teams will spend a hair over $2 billion on player salary this year. For this, they will “purchase” 1,230 wins — that is, 41 wins per team, or half of the games in an 82-game season. That means that the price of a win is about $1.63 million dollars.

They used Hollinger from ESPN's for the estimated win importance value.

Around 5 million because of the rookie pay scale.

Another reason unions suck. Guys on that team making more than they deserve and Blake actually underpaid for what he's done for that team.

OK, OK, I'll get off my soapbox now...

I could name a lot of ways unions have benefited not only NBA players, but every worker in America (one need only look at conditions before unions existed), but perhaps it'd be better if we kept politics off this basketball board.

Why on Earth would you give an unproven rookie $27mm out of a draft? That's crazy...and to further back up that point, he missed all of last year with an injury! The NFL rookie pay scale is a joke, love me some Sammy B, but there is no way an unproven player should be making $50mm guaranteed before throwing a pass.

Blake will get his very soon, doubt he's too worried about it.

I agree, they HAD their place...all I'll say is, IMO, good, hard workers would make MORE money if not for unions, because businesses wouldn't be wasting cash on deadbeat workers. It's working well for everyone else, not sure why people wanting anyone negotiating on their behalf when they can easily to it themselves.

It's worked well for me and I know if some guy doing less than me was making the same as me....

This, the rookie pay scale is good for the NBA. It could be argued that it could be a little higher but I'd rather have the payscale then have Stafford and Bradford be the highest paid QBs like the NFL.

You realize they are getting that because of the union...right? While I agree some are overpaid, MANY are not simply because of the immense amount of cash they bring in.

Blake and Sam are GREAT examples. Do you think either ownership group would gladly pay them more, now that they know what they know.

I'm not arguing for rookies making more compared to their like positions around the league, but lets face it, there aren't many that deserve the money they are making.

Regardless of your side on that issue, it'd be nice if they got what the market allowed instead of some agent or union skewing it all by making some 3rd stringer make money they don't deserve...

He needs (if he hasn't) to donate some of that to a charity. That's too much money to be playing basketball.

If you want players to get paid fair market value, perhaps management should eliminate the salary cap. Pretty rich to lay all of this at the feet of the players union.

I'm sure they would if they could pay the rest of the players on THEIR merit and not Kobe/LeBron/Blake's.

I'm sorry I got off on this. I realize MANY unions are great for their hard-working members and I don't mean to offend THOSE people.

after what I have witnessed in Wisconsin since the end of January you'd hafta be an IDIOT to take management's side over unions right now. the NBA, NFL etc... need to watch and learn as well.

Would you rather be privately employed for a REASONABLE rate for the job you actually perform or an unemployed union worker? I'm of the belief, in today's US with all the safety regulations and the competitiveness of the job force, MOST people would prosper from what is being attempted in Wisconsin.

Seriously, can we get back to talking about the awesomeness of Blake and how as a rookie some random chart in a New York times blog post claims he's the 7th most valuable player in the NBA instead of bickering over politics? Isn't this a basketball board and not a political board?

I apologize...

...and your ideas would fail to comport with reality. It may be your "belief", but that doesn't mean things actually work that way (and they don't). It's akin to the reason that no one will go to jail for the financial disaster our country just suffered.

No need to apologize, I just find it amazing how quickly subjects can change on the internet and I know that many people on this board have strong opinions on politics and no reason to turn this into one of those debates.

sorry...I am pumped up. We defeated Sally Kerns newest attempt to teach creationism as a science in Oklahoma today (in committee) and now I am roaring for another fight.

here: BLAKE GRIFFIN RULES! Every owner otter send him a thank you card and a check.
