Breakdown of UVA/UMBC game

This is so good. The other day there was a conversation here about how we need more bigs and how in college you need multiple bigs to post up and score in the low post. I posted an article from 538 on Dan D'Antoni -- the Marshall coach who runs a lot of stuff very similar to what UMBC runs -- and commented that we don't need more bigs. We need guards and shooters because the game today -- the video keeps referring to it as "modern offenses" -- is guard-dominated and emphasizes the pick-and-roll. This is exactly what UMBC did against Virginia.

OU does some of this stuff and can do it next year as well if we have excellent ball movement. What this team lacked late in the season was excellent ball movement and I think that's one big reason why the team didn't shoot as well later in the year as they did early in the year.

Here's another link to that 538 article. It correlates well with the video.

Young created a ton of chances for the bigs who set the high ball screen and for the shooters on the wings. Early in the year, these chances were converted at a nice rate (in particular at the 3 point line when the team was shooting a tick over 40% from the 3 point range), but later in the season the conversion rate waned. This frustrated Young, which definitely showed. Also, defenses changed how they attacked Young and this action. Having said that, one thing that Young performed poorly on in the season, especially the second half was finishing at the rim. His FG% at the rim was way too low and that affected the team significantly. It also didn't help that when he did pass to the bigs/cutting wings in the lane off dribble penetration, they failed to catch the ball or missed way too many bunnies.

The defense was mediocre throughout the season, but ultimately this season flopped because the team quit converting offensively.

As for ball movement, I do agree that OU didn't do a great job on secondary action, but where it really waned was in tertiary action. Early in the year they really never went that far in the offense because they didn't need to because they were converting so early in the shot clock. There is a reason OU was averaging a high points per game. Their pace and efficiency were high. Unfortunately, the efficiency went down as the season progressed.

I agree 100%. They'd run the pick-and-pop and Manek would immediately shoot instead of looking for the next man. Or Trae would dribble drive and kick to the shooter on the perimeter who too often just shot it instead of continuing the action. There's always someone open on stuff like that but it's not always the 1st guy who catches the pass. We needed to keep the ball moving more.

Also, Trae often dribbled too much when hit with the hedge off the P-&-R or the double team and we'd feel pressed to shoot too quickly. More ball movement is what the team needed.

An issue is that none of the other wing players are good dribblers or passers, especially dribblers. Get the ball to McGusty and you know the ball was stopping. James tried to take it inside but it seemed like 50% of the time he either lost the ball, had his shot blocked, or had it stolen. Teams recognized that they didn't have to guard Odomes at all on the perimeter, which also bogged down he offense. Manek hit the freshman wall and he also felt if he touched the ball he had to shoot it. Doolittle couldn't hit the broad side of a barn as well. But, for some reason all of this is Young's fault according to many on this board.

Unfortunately, the game plan for defending OU was laid out for all to see and OU didn't adjust. Have to blame Kruger for that and the players a bit. But, there are some deficiencies that the players that have that even Kruger couldn't overcome (poor recruiting could be pinned on this as well).
