Bruce Weber?: Tulsa World

kinda like they aren't completely happy with a coach who took them to the championship game.

Weber has never been fully embraced by the illini because of the success Bill Self had. Bill Self is a tough act to follow, highest win% at Tulsa, Illinois, & Kansas.

I really don't understand how you could support Capel so ardently and dismiss a coach like Weber. Can you provide a rational explanation?

Our coach took us to the championship game. Winner of the UNC/OU was going to be NCs.

Tubby Smith won a NC at Kentucky with Pitino's players, and Kentucky is smart enough to know that he can't get it done with his own.

I support Capel b/c last year he lost Willie Warren for most of the season...to go along with not returning 3 starters from the season before. With Warren, during his last game, we beat Texas(ranked 10th in the country at the time) and then we lose the rest when he's out for the year. I understand that he lost 3 guys to the D-league and he had to start over b/c he only returned 3 players. Thats why I support him.

Capels gone, but I don't need stats to know that if Warren doesn't get hurt we make the tournament and if TMG, Warren, and Gallon was on this years roster...we would win or come close to winning the big 12.

Weber has a 15-10 postseason record (NIT and NCAA) with 2 Sweet 16's and a 2nd place finish. He's only presided over 1 conference losing record between SIU and UofI. He has a 0.679 career winning percentage.

Sounds perfectly acceptable for a program that just went 13-18 and 14-18 in subsequent years, and won a combined total of 9 conference games.

Take a look at the talent that comes out of Illinois and then compare it to the talent in Oklahoma...an Illinois coach should be doing better.

But Capel was doing just fine????

I get it...Capels gone...I'm ready for us to get a coach and get on the recruiting trail. But that doesn't mean I have to be happy with some of these suggestions floating around.

I don't want a coach who record keeps getting worse...like Buzz and Weber.

Do you think that Capel was just too good for us? Fact is he recruited players that were POS's because he didn't do a good job of doing back ground stuff. He would rather go to the big AAU events trying to look like he was recruiting guys he had no shot at getting than really looking into the guys he was getting in. Capel caused his own undoing not being unlucky because players didn't turn out. TMG, Tiny and Willie weren't going to magically be better people.

Ugh. Just Ugh. I'd rather take a chance again on an up-and-comer rather than go with Weber.

If true, it gives Joe the chance to say he hired an tenured coach form a decent major conference but not much else. If he thinks Weber is the answer then I am seriously beginning to doubt his MO in searches now. If it's Weber then he screwed up somewhere.

Even though there may be some smoke here I just can't believe this is legit. OU athletics has a good rep and we are respectable to excellent in all our varsity sports. I can't believe we can't attract someone better than Weber.

Weber's "no real story" quote has me worried.

Please no.

I personally would support this hire.

We are getting a guy thats had major success at a high-major. Take of the crimson glasses and look at the shape of the program. Taking a guy who has won 20 games 9/10 seasons in a solid conference would be a great hire.

He has ties to Chicago so there is a great chance he could recruit there in the future... Add that to the Texas and Oklahoma HS basketball talent and I believe he could put together solid classes over the next several years.

Weber is way better then any other option we have left.

This may not end up happening, but one thing is for certain: this is not just another BS rumor. For one, there ain't no way in hail that Weber is getting a pay raise, so this was not something that was just leaked by one of Weber's people as a bargaining chip. Regardless of what Weber says, there is or was something going on.

I concur

They are going to marquette to play for a real coach and not some garbage coach in weber...no one wants to go to norman anyway
