From what I've read, Buzz didn't hire an agent when he signed his contract at Marquette and he even admitted to making a mistake in that aspect. I'll try to find the article that I read on his contract. If it's indeed $3.8 mill, I don't see how OU pays that.

Yes, it seems to me that would be uncommon. Remember that a buyout works both ways. If another school wants to hire your coach away, they have to pay the buyout. If you want to fire your coach, you have to pay the coach the buyout. If you're a university why in the world would you write the contract so that the buyout = the coach's annual salary x the remaining years on the deal? Good lord we would've owed Capel like $6 million!

Buyouts are typically considerably less than the annual salary. Take a look at this list of coaches and you'll see what I mean.

Rick Barnes doesn't even have a buyout in his contract. Turgeon makes $1.5 mil and has a buyout of $1 mil. Same thing for Jamie Dixon. Steve Alford's salary is at $1.1 million, his buyout is $400,000. Arizona is paying Sean Miller $2 million, his buyout is a mere $500,000.

Rosiak: Williams' buyout is that large in order to protect Marquette from losing its coach too easily, like what happened with Tom Crean.

Rosiak says he is very confident the Buzz Williams buyout is north of $3 million
