Calvin Newell

Has an offer from Baylor and West Virginia among others per Scout. Here's some video:

Got any more info or anything to share as scout doesn't mentioned OU at all?

I don't see OU as a school of interest. He is considering us now or just wishful thinking?

He looks pretty athletic

Depending on how things playout with a number of recruits we could be one of the better athletic schools in the conference next year

Well he's here this weekend so I would consider that some interest. I guess Capel really does always pull out someone from nowhere.

You think Fitz, Pledger and Cade will be some of the most athletic in the conference or expecting the freshman to be the guys who play above the rim?

some more info on Newell

In need of more scoring from its backcourt, the West Virginia basketball staff has been hitting the road all season in search of junior and senior candidates to compliment incoming 2010 guard Noah Cottrill. One prospect they have become seriously involved with is Calvin Newell of Evelyn Mack Academy in Charlotte, NC

Newell is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior who enrolled at Evelyn Mack after averaging 33 points per game as a senior at Strath Haven High in Wallingford, Pa., last summer for a post-graduate year. In addition to working towards qualifying academically, he was seeking better exposure to recruiters.

So far, so good: His stock has exploded since then, as he’s averaged 20 points per game and collected scholarship offers from Baylor, Arizona, Providence, Uconn, Florida, Rutgers and Penn State.

West Virginia has reportedly offered as well.

“I know they’re recruiting him and they came down to see him [recently]. I can’t verify the scholarship offer but that may have been something they said to him. They’ve talked to me a number of times about him,” said Evelyn Mack coach William Sperow. “Coach Huggins has been here to see him. They watched in in a major tournament in Connecticut and then came to see him in another tournament in Rhode Island.”

Newell is regarded as a dynamic scoring point guard. In consecutive games he posted 28 points on 11 of 13 shooting against South Kent and guard Russell Smith (Louisville) and 37 points on 13 of 20 shooting against The Winchendon School and guard Anthony Ireland (Loyola Marymount).

“He can play the two but a scoring point guard is what he is. He can really shoot the ball, he’s quick and athletic, above the rim. He’s got a really strong body,” Sperow said, adding that he expects Newell will qualify, though he’s still working on improving his SAT score.

As for his recruitment, Sperow’s phone has been ringing off of the hook. Newell has already taken an official visit to Niagara and will trip to Baylor this weekend. He’ll then return and map out the rest of his visits.

“He’ll set up a couple of visits after that. I know he’s supposed to go to Morgantown at some point,” Sperow said. “I wouldn’t say it’s wide open, but he’s still listening to everyone. Baylor has been there the longest. I know he likes the guys at West Virginia.

“Like any kid, he’s looking for a place that feels comfortable. I think after he goes on these visits he’ll know what he wants to do.”

ESPN Evaluation (89 Rating): November, 2009 Newell put on an offensive show this weekend, going for 28 and 37 in his two games (National Prep Showcase). He is a scoring point, always looking to attack the defense and equally dangerous with his dribble penetration or perimeter jumper. He's a super gutsy playmaker who relishes having the ball in pressure situations and knows how to get his own shot at the end of the shot clock. Newell has all the physical tools to be a solid defender but will need to learn to play without the ball and better balance his scoring and distributing responsibilities to run a team at the college level.

I guess I meant to say one of the most athletic classes overall in the big 12...but possibly team wise to...cade is cade, he is a hard nosed kid and will not be crazy athletic

But I believe pledger and fitz will suprise people next year with their change in athletic ability
This kid on this thread looks athletic, cam is a stupid athletic, taylor is a very good athlete...then if we get a jones or ross that adds to it

Wow, kids like him are still out there. A pg of his caliber will really raise the ceiling of next years team.

from niagara and smu to connecticut and west virginia.

don't see that very often.

Here are several briefs I found on Newell, including a report where he put up 37 points at the National Prep Showcase last fall. As you can see by the one at the end, he is attracting a lot more attention from schools across the country now:

Evelyn Mack Academy

Calvin Newell (2010, 6-1 PG/SG)
Calvin put on a show against Winchendon, in what was probably the top performance of the National Prep Showcase. He dropped 37 points, had 4 steals and handed out 5 assists while only turning the ball over once. He was even good from the free throw line where he hit 6 of his 7 attempts. Calvin scored taking the ball to the hoop, stopping and popping for a mid range jumper and also on a put back after grabbing an offensive rebound. Where he really did his damage though was from behind the 3 point line. Calvin hit 5 of his 9 attempts and these were not easy shots. He usually had a hand in his face or he shot from very deep. One of these makes he fired up from 5 or 6 feet beyond the arc to beat the shot clock.

At 1 point later in the second half Calvin just started to take over the entire game. He played physical D on Anthony Ireland who was trying to bring the ball up the court, but Calvin picked his pocket on more than 1 occasion which resulted in a couple of open layups and a two handed slam. This really frustrated Ireland and really just took him out of his game. Calvin pretty much put his team on his back and almost carried them to a victory but Evelyn Mack Academy just came up a bit short. In this 1 game performance Calvin looked like the best player at the showcase and that is saying something with the amazing amount of talent that was at this event.

Calvin Newell (2009, 6-0 SG)
Calvin didn't get to play a full high school season after transferring, but luckily he can continue to showcase his game during this AAU season. He did just that in this one. He showed the ability to shoot from the perimeter as he hit on a pair of three pointers. He's a pretty solid ball handler who can get into the lane. He had a steal and lay-in on one play. Calvin also dished off an assist after a rebound. He put together a nice outing.

On the outside, Calvin hit a pull up three pointer. He had several other nice plays, including a pass inside. He attacked some off the dribble and either drew a foul or kicked the ball out for an assist. Calvin did pick off several passes on the defensive end too.

New offers for Calvin Newell
Thursday, 28 January 2010

The first time we saw Calvin Newell was back in the summer of 2008, which was the AAU season after his senior year. We got to see him play twice that summer and he played very well on both occasions.

While he showed some of what he could do in those games we did not realize how dominant of a player Calvin could be until after we saw him at the National Prep Showcase back in November. He played for the Evelyn Mack Academy out of North Carolina, where he is now attending prep school.

At the National Prep showcase Calvin showed he could attack off the dribble and either take it all the way to the hoop or stop and pop for a mid range jump shot. Where he really killed his opponents though was from behind the arc. He buried five 3 pointers in the game, some of which were well defended or launched up from beyond NBA range. When his team was down he even ratcheted his defense up a level and just took over the game on both ends of the court.

After this spectacular performance we wanted to contact Calvin to find out what schools he is looking at presently.

Calvin let us know that he is currently considering offers from Baylor, UConn, West Virginia, Drexel, Louisiana-Lafayette and Marshall.

It seems like the major schools are leading for his services at the moment though, as he listed Baylor, West Virginia and UConn as the schools at the top of his list.

Before this latest update we previously had Calvin listed with interest from Penn State, Massachusetts and Texas Tech, with offers from Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Siena and St. Francis (PA).

Calvin seems to already have quite a few quality options, but I would not be surprised to see more schools try to get involved with him. We will keep you updated if anything changes with Calvin’s recruitment.

This would be an amazing get for us this late in the game. That being said, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Imagine a class finished off by this guy, the Terrances, and a juco big, best class for Capel??

Well he's here this weekend so I would consider that some interest. I guess Capel really does always pull out someone from nowhere.

I wondered who the mystery recruit was that was here this weekend, thanks for sharing.

a glimmer of hope! Just getting a new guy of this status on campus makes me very happy.

If he is really good, he probably won't consider OU right now. The coaches around the country are dissing OU.
