Capel Adds Newell, Ahmed to OU Recruiting Class

Under the circumstances, I think this is a very good class on paper. Now, they need to prove that on the court.

How many years of eligibility will we have ahmed? Sorry if i missed it

w0lfe,
Canaris Basketball Academy looks like a prep school equivalent.
So he should have 4.

From the article:

The signing of Newell and Ahmed brings OU's 2010 class of newcomers to eight members. The pair joins fellow incoming freshmen Cameron Clark, Tyler Neal and T.J. Taylor, junior college transfers Nick Thompson and C.J. Washington, and University of New Orleans transfer Carl Blair.

Thanks atl and bok :clap It will be fun the first game to see all the new faces

Totally agree, Norm. I'm very excited about the two PGs Jeff has signed. They both appear to be the type of players we need to provide quality and depth at that position. And this big kid (Ahmed) could turn out to be a huge get. Like you implied, only time will tell.

Welcome aboard, Messrs. Newell and Ahmed! I'm looking forward to seeing how all these exciting new pieces of the Sooner puzzle fit together.

At 6'10" 215lbs, Ahmed is almost the antithesis of Gallon.

He needs weight fast if he wants to play this year.

Hopefully, he can get to Norman soon and start building strength.

So how much weight does the kid need to gain in order to play Div. 1 basketball?

When you consider that Longar was 230ish his senior year and considered too skinny, I thing he needs to be atleast that weight. Especially when you consider that last year Ryan Wright was 240 and Cole Aldrich was 245. Thirty pounds of bodyweight makes a huge difference.

At 6'10" he needs to be in the 235-250 range to fully muscle people around down low. Look for him to be around 220-225 when season ends and to be around 235 next year. imo

wow! i cant believe i am THIS is excited about OU hoops at the moment. maybe i'm blinded by optimism, but Capel really pulled off some decent players. and i think most importantly, players who want to be here. from Ahmed to Newell to the North Texas boys.

dare i say this looks like a Sampson class?! an Okie, a couple of Texans who we think flew under the radar a bit, couple of JUCO transfers, D-1 transfer and a foreign player.

gotta love it.

now it's up to Capel to instill a diligent, ethical modus operandi in the OU program. it begins with the first practice, his assistants and his demeanor. i would hope he could get some pointers from Coach K and his old man. maybe he could even borrow Schmitty from Stoops!

That's probably right, being a 19 yr. old youngster he has plenty of time to build muscle weight and be helpful by his sophomore year if not next. We shall see how hard of a worker he will be.

Its weird that random fans give 100% of the credit for developing big men to Cline, when both Griffins and Longar all credited Capel just as much or more for their development. As I have said many times before, Capel has made enough mistakes as it is. No need to take all credit away for what he has done well.

:clap

Thank you bok. Blake has said it on more than one occasion that he credited Capel for his improvement from his Freshman to Sophomore years. Also as you pointed out Taylor and LL both did as well, Blake's was just more public.

That's not necessarily true and I bet he is heavier than 215. If he can get here early enough in the summer I can see him putting on 10 pounds of muscle. He's gonna play regardless, we need his height.

Said Orellana, "In Abdi Ahmed, Oklahoma is getting a post player who is capable of shooting the ball to 19 feet and has a very good back-to-the-basket game. He is a tremendously hard worker who plays the game the right way. He is a player whose best days of basketball are ahead of him.

Abdi Ahmed from the Canary Islands? You have to be kidding me! May I ask which basketball powerhouses we beat for his services?
