If you have guys have access to OU Insider you should go read Hale's two part interview with JC. Interesting stuff in there about last season and the guys coming in (and guys we missed on). Sorry, not trying to tease just not sure how much I can say about it.

I heard the interview on the radio so here's what I can remember from it.

Basically, Capel said the same stuff he's been saying about last season and he also ranted about people on the message boards and the media not getting the story right. Said they had two recruits coming but lost one of them because people were sending negative articles to him about the program, which he's said before.

Said the guys are working hard etc. The one interesting thing he said about the players that stood out to me was that Carl Blair was the most ready to play or something like that.

Good to hear regarding Blair. We are going to need him to be ready for sure if we want to improve record-wise.

So, let's keep in mind, before we kneejerk about how we hate Capel and he needs to be fired and we're getting the death penalty and we'll suck for years, that someone from another program will possibly print that out and give it to a recruit. They'll tell the recruit, "Here is a snapshot of fan sentiment about the program you're thinking of attending." Then your prophecy of failure has a better chance of coming true!

I was telling the wife this morning, 2-3 years ago I thought we had a great place to discuss our sport, but it seems 60/40 at least in favor of this being a place for people with marginal knowledge of a situation to vent negatively about the program. While I understand the need to do this, remember the more extreme and negative and not thought out your opinions are, the better chance someone might use it to influence potential recruits/assistant coaches.

At least maybe keep it to as few threads as possible so people don't think that all we do is negatively rant and rave about how much we don't like our team.

Great post, I blame several fans on here for at least one recruit we lost.

Lol, 2-3 years ago we had the griffin boys, capel was coming off s poor season with a very good season, Boone had anything to complain about

now we have coaches leaving, NCAA infractions, average recruiting class... There is plenty of ammo. Comparing 2-3 years ago to today is not a good comparison

When constant complaints lead to recruiting issues, it doesn't matter when it happens. Capel pretty much called those people, both on here in the media, stupid.

I get your point about the comparison, and I agree, it's a rougher climate now. My point is that if we spend most of our time complaining and whining about how disgusted we are with everything it is not helping. In fact, we are making our team worse (by denying ourselves recruits and coaches) if we do it so much it becomes the majority of the threads on the board. Lazy so-called "journalists" steal it, print stories about how the fan base is infuriated and unhappy, then people print off posts and cut out "news" articles and show that stuff to a prospective recruit.

If that's what you want to happen, I wouldn't call it being a fan. And I've had enough crap about how this is a place for opinions and you have a right to put up 35 posts about how alignment sucks or our team is gonna suck. Save that crap for your OSU friends. They'll love to talk about it with you.

:clap A lot of us, myself included, need to be more positive when discussing our program here. There is a place for the negative because lets face it, its not all sunshine and rainbows right now, but we do need to portray a positive feeling to our university so that our posts cant be used against us

As my mom used to say...

"If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all!"

:)

Calaway I agree with your sentiment but disagree it effects recruiting at all.
Some of the worst, most negative messages boards are KU, Kentucky's, UNC's, etc. Unfortunately it's how society and the media are today.

I'm just going off of the statement from our coach that said the message boards and media scared off at least one recruit. I also seem to recall someone mentioning it affected the assistant coaching search. He said it, not me, so I'm going to assume it's true.

Also I think it's a different situation. Those schools have kids coming that are dedicated to an elite program. Our situation is that we are trying to get heavily recruited kids, often just going off of a trust relationship with Capel, and not a name status thing. They will be easily swayed, since OU is one of two or three other schools they are considering.

I guess what I'm saying is that when we get as many banners as UNC and UK I won't be as worried about negative fan postings affecting recruiting.

Amen. You are correct. You can't compare KU's fans to OU's fans. KU's program is well beyond what a few idiots on a message board say. We need all the help we can get to land these kids. It's just the nature of being a top 25 all time basketball program at a football school.

So the suggestion is that we keep the basketball board on a more positive or at least contructive note?

Wow...that sounds strangely familiar to me. Not sure how. hmmm - maybe it will come to me.

I kinda take it personal that he was talking about people on message boards because there's only one message board in America where there is serious OU hoops talk. And this message board is a bunch of true OU fans in my opinion.

Yeah, this whole thread has mostly been discussed previously by some of us. Like it or not, just remember, that back when the world of OU basketball was falling down around us a few months ago, and a ton of threads on this board were kneejerk reactionary stuff (and also false rumors and so-called inside information), people were showing it to people like Marquise Carter.

Not saying it's good or bad or whatever, just saying Capel said it made a difference.

Just saying.

Also, before somebody says I'm saying it happened with Carter, I'm not, specifically. I have no concrete information that that happened. However, he comes to mind as a possible victim of negative recruiting.

I don't doubt that something to the effect of what Capel is alleging is happening. That said, if the level of trust a coach has built up with a recruit is such that he'll bolt when seeing the transcript of what some rando said on the internet, then perhaps it wasn't quite the sure thing the coach thought it was. And if this is such an effective recruiting tool, Oklahoma basketball needs to hire someone to do nothing but scour opponents boards, because they are worse than ours by a factor of a hundred and we can steal all kinds of recruits.

The last thing this board needs to do is become a de facto arm of the OU athletics PR department.
