Capel's interview with Hale up on OU Insider

The ironic thing is when I was living in STL, the Talk was all Brad Beal. Now this dude has passed him up.

i don't know that mclemore has passed beal up. everyone still loves beal.

stl has another player, bj young that is also really making noise. crazy to get 3 guys that good at the same position in the same city in the same class. especially st louis, which doesn't produce a lot of great players, for whatever reason.

Some of the Athlete's First guys have some clips of where he threw down some big dunks on them. The ironic thing is when I was living in STL, the Talk was all Brad Beal. Now this dude has passed him up.

I wouldn't say he's passed him. Beal is still ranked higher and a stud. I just think McElmore is the buzz now because of his fast rise where as Beal has been on the national scene since middle school. Kind of like that new girl at school.

Everyone seems to be getting a little defensive about this. As skyvue said, Capel was talking about misinformation, not simple negativity. Message boards, generally, lack the credibility to be damaging. Capel is referring to national and local media reporting rumors as fact. If I was a recruit and someone handed me the national story about how OU should get the death penalty, I would think twice about going there. Some posters here, and elsewhere, may have been accomplices by spreading these stories, but the news agencies that practice irresponsible reporting should be held responsible.

When someone feels the need to throw out all of his "OU ties" to make the article look like it isn't going to be a hatchet job, rest assured, a hatchet job is coming. Based on what ANYBODY knows to date, discussion of the death penalty [or even major sanctions] borders on the absurd.

As far as this board, last season sucked for multiple reasons...but there were/are a few that took a crap season and decided that our Coach and program were the perfect toilet paper. Still a few that CLEARLY want to see the program fail and our coach hung from the nearest tree. To take what we know know and spout off about "major sanctions" is absurd from the average message board turd, it is willful misconduct from a "journalist".

I respect your opinion, but don't agree with it at all.

OU didn't lose any recruit because of any message board. That's BS. The media printed ALL OVER THE NATION about the Tiny Gallon issue and possible probation, and Capel's problems with Willie Warren was not written by OU fans.

It was printed on NATIONAL MEDIA venues because it was newsworthy.

I read it everywhere. I heard it on the radio everywhere. I saw it on ESPN.

Coaches will take that press and share it with recruits, no doubt. So, OU needs to STOP DOING IT!

The fans are not doing it. To blame the fans is DUMBER THAN DUMB!

Dude, you are so dumb you started a random thread about self-sanctions based on no SOLID information of violations. NONE! You are the EXACT guy that Capel was talking about...an idiot.

I do have something to admit:

it is my fault that OU didn't land Terrence Jones

I don't need think there is a need to call people names.

I agree the death penalty talk that a few people threw out there is stupid and absurd. I don't think however someone asking about self sanctions is dumb. I think most of us are expecting some kind of punishment. I don't think it will be major but the fact that OU was already on probation is what worries me the most.

Self sanctions are an admission of guilt...

If Capel is blaming me for having to release an assistant coach and having the NCAA and OU investigate the Tiny Gallon issue, then so be it.

I stand by my position to self-report, which they have, and self-penalize, which they will if the NCAA believes a violation has occurred, knowing the NCAA is involved right now.

An assistant coach leaving OU over the issue is a major concern, but the right decision. That's proactive.

Self sanctions are an admission of guilt...

Well, OU and the NCAA are collectively investigating the issue, and one assistant coach is out along with Tiny out of the picture, so to assume there isn't smoke is a your choice.

An OU assistant wouldn't have left OU, if something wasn't a concern to OU compliance department and the AD.

OU is handling as they should.

I never said anything about the death penalty as OU is proactively investigating this issue with the NCAA, which is self-reporting, and any conclusion of improper contact or handling of the Tiny Gallon issue by an OU assistant coach will be self-sanctioned by OU.

I just hope they are able to conclude their investigation early enough to apply any penalties to the 2010-2011 basketball season and get this issue behind us.

Absolutely agree. Jeff Capel needs to look in the mirror and he will find his answers.

Beal's not the athlete McElmore is. It's easier for an Athlete to become a great shooter than it is for a shooter to become a great athlete.

Basically, Capel said the same stuff he's been saying about last season and he also ranted about people on the message boards and the media not getting the story right. Said they had two recruits coming but lost one of them because people were sending negative articles to him about the program, which he's said before.

Lol @ Capel.

This reminds me of when Jeff was talking about all the "rumors" about players leaving, receiving money, being cancers, etc. Where was the rumor? All the suspected players left, one took money, another met with the guy who gave the other guy money, the top paid assistant bolted because he helped the player get money, TMG told Capel he was leaving by Christmas.

All the "speculation" that was going around on this board was printed in the national and local media and pretty much all of it was true. There were no rumors, no misinformation, etc. Worst case scenario for OU happened and Jeff is trying to put a positive spin on it before penalties come.

You had a crooked team, Jeff. Don't blame the fans or the media when you guys were crooked.

Sometimes, the truth hurts.

I am sorry, I missed the interview...did Capel truly blame the fans for loosing recruits?? Someone fill me in please.....

If he is really blaming the fans then that is just funny and silly. Sounds like a bunch of excuses if you ask me. Did he blame himself for loosing control of last years team, which in return probably lost us several top recruits?? Or maybe the fact the he was unable to correctly coach three burger boys on one team??

This is why you don't even bring up negative stuff about the media, fans or internet message boards. Just adds fuel to the fire and more threads like this.

Bottom line is if recruits are being lost it's because the other coaches OU is recruiting against are saying "why would you go to OU with all the turmoil and possible NCAA sanctions". We all know that is what they are saying. That's what all coaches would say. You can't blame the fans or media for that.

Capel fan speaking...and I agree with the above.

In addition, if a recruit is worried about fan's opinions that much, then I probably don't want him. We will praise you when you do well and work hard, but if you're out there taking money, causing distractions in the locker room and not being a team player, yeah, we're going to criticize you. Get over it.

Laughed at the story about the kid from Wisconsin, comical that he thinks the environment at Marquette will be any different than in Madison.

Honestly come on. Im as big a Capel guy as anyone (ok cept you Faithful) but with the crap that went down this past year you shut your mouth, say things spiraled out of control and that we re back on the right track now. Blaming the media or message boards is a cop out and is getting old at this point. Really old.
