Carter having second thoughts?

Juco guy having to compete for a starting spot on a decent team (rankings mean jack crap in college basketball) and possibly ride the bench or be able to start from day 1 on a rebuilding team with the possibility of being a legend for turning a program around in your last eligible years. Obviously he just didn't want to go to OU.

There were no guarantees of playing time, but when you are a JC transfer, winning is an even more important factor then if you are coming out of high school. No offense to the OU program, but for the next two years, Gonzaga presents a much better chance for winning.

It's also important to note that Marquise is from the West Coast, and playing in the WCC

the MOST important thing to juco's on average is playing time not winning nessecarily and he would start here easily..

and the WCC whats that? JK.. i dont like gonzaga they are the boise state of basketball I hoped carter would pick ou because he would get instant PT and he'll play in a real conference (without the loyola marymounts and the portlands)..

Carter was clearly an OU lean 2 weeks ago. He was supposed to come in to visit this past weekend with an expected OU commitment. 2 days before this visit, out of nowhere, he commits to Gonzaga. 1 week later, after information that Capel at this point isnt going to be fired nor was interviewing for any other jobs, Carter is now considering OU again.

Someone was either feeding him negative information or there was a lack of communication with Carter that got him scared. Probably a combination of both.

You have hit the nail on the head with your entire post! Team members were even told Carter was coming to OU by Carter himself, then out of no where is when all of this recruiting stuff went on. Look, if you think dirty recruiting does not go on you're living in a fantasy world! Its just a part of the game, even at Gonzaga. Its probably not done by the coach, although some would, but most likely an assistant that puts that bug in his ear and then it takes its own form. All it took is for an assistant to tell Carter that hey WW is going pro, all these guys are leaving, next is Caple.

I wouldn't feel good about Carter until that LOI is signed and in my hands.

They probably sat him in a room and wouldnt let him leave until he committed...wouldnt surprise me, happens all the time...

Here is a little more from Carter in the Spokesman Review today

"“There were some second thoughts,” said Carter, a two-time NJCAA All-American point guard for Three Rivers Community College (Poplar Bluff, Mo.). “I was comfortable with my (original) decision, it’s just when you have family members closest to you putting things in your head about different schools and different situations … it made it hard on me. I just thought about where I’d fit best."

This just sounds like a kid who had a lot of things pulling him in different directions. Again, I know it sounds crazy, but maybe Gonzaga was just the better fit for him. Sorry if that doesn't fit into all of the negative recruiting and trapping him in a room theories.

Congrats on the commitment. Hope he turns out to be a good player for you.

His brother sure was for us! Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate Carterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Does anyone know what this is about?

According to the sticky thread about NCAA recruiting compliance, once the administrator of OUHoops.com made an impermissable contact with Marquise, and posted the PSA's reply, attributed, and inside quotation marks, Oklahoma University became ineligible to further recruit him or sign him to an LOI, according to the research of the Santa Clara University NCAA Compliance Officer, on whose statement that thread was based.

He may still decide to go somewhere other than Gonzaga, but it could not be to Oklahoma, could it?

It's that poster's interpretation of this. It's not that the Santa Clara compliance office investigated this specific case.

I don't know the veracity of any of this, but interviewing prospective athletes doesn't seem to be something unique to OUHoops.com among fan web sites.

edit: or what El Jefe said. What would be the distinction between an interview on ouhoops.com and ouinsider.com?

Well, Hale, for example, has media credentials (though, I'd hardly call him a real journalist). Seems that rule is somewhat murky.

I already e-mailed that nugget from that Gonzaga board to OUHoops on Tuesday. I'll let him tell you what he told me, but let's just say their intepretation of that rule is beyond ridiculous.
