The Elephant in the Room is Named Brady

I’m officially coming out of long-term lurker status for this one! Great topic. I apologize for the wall of text.

First off, I feel like these long breaks between games haven’t done us any favors as a team. We have lacked some intensity and the whole team seems to be a bit off. With that said, Brady is not in the right shape to be a center for 25-30 min a game, he is not a good post defender, and when he’s missing shots he’s taking shots away from higher percentage shooters this year.

I think there are three things at play with regards to Brady’s physical shape: Brady didn’t train to be a full-time center this off season, Covid took more out of him than we realized, and the combination has really affected his ability to recover, defend, and shoot. His expected role on the team looked very different 3 months ago vs now. I know his legs are shot after being undersized and banging with centers all game. I’ve been there! It sucks. I also don’t think Lon has done him any favors either with shot selection. It seems like most of his 3’s come from above the break. I wish he would get more shots from the corner.

As far as his actual defense goes, he’s a liability. While Kur is far from perfect, Kur does a much better job forcing the opposing center to actually fight for the block and is probably the better option for pick and rolls (though not by much). What Kur does exponentially better though is alter shots in the paint. Kur allows our guards to be more aggressive on ball because if they get beat, he’s in better position back there to actually contest the shot. Brady is so concerned with his defensive responsibility (their big) that he isn’t putting himself in the right position to play good team defense. I feel for him because he’s been put in a tough spot, but that is now part of his job on the court.

Lastly, if Brady was shooting at his last year averages, he is worth the bad defense. But with him shooting the ball at about a 36ish % from the field and 25% from 3 in February (let me know if my math is wrong lol), his shots take away from higher percentage shooters like Mo, Harkless, Reaves, & Harmon.

I think we need to start Kur for defense which also allows our guards to shoot the ball more. I also want Lon to run some offensive sets for Brady to get Corner 3’s and miss-match post ups off the bench when he is in. Brady can truly elevate the team to a higher level.

I’ll always have the utmost respect for Brady because he has worked hard for this program and is a huge part of it for the last 4 years. But Lon needs to be the head coach and give him an opportunity to be impactful and find his role in the team off the bench. Or Brady breaks out of this slump in March? I 100% support this option as well!

First, I hope you don’t tease us with your words of wisdom and then disappear again. Six posts in the last twelve years is not nearly enough. This board needs posters like you!

I like your idea to start Kur. His presence on the floor alone makes him a threat to block or change shots. Personally, I would like to see Lon at least try to put Brady and Kur on the floor at the same time. That might take the pressure off of Brady to defend guys like Derek Culver and smaller but stronger fours who make him work so hard on defense he has nothing left. If a shooters legs are gone, he’s going to miss more shots.

Great posts, c-mac! Please don’t let them be the last!

The one thing about Kur starting is Kruger will not hesitate to substitute him early on if he sees him not performing up to expectations thus he plays for 4 or 5 minutes and it's off to the bench.

brady was bad last game no doubt about it ... he didn't shoot well vs ISU (but he actually played pretty well ..

he was very good the 4 games before that ..

This is a very astute observation. I feel Ike Brady has a longer leash than Kur (which is probably fair given Brady's impact on the team for 4 years). If Kur is a net negative, pull him and put Brady in.
I would prefer Kur start against big, interior oriented centers or forward (ie McCormack, Samuels, Bradford, Santos-Silva kinda? ) and let Brady start against the teams who don't seem to focus as much on low post scoring. Nobody is stopping Culver 1 on 1, but would prefer Kur get his fouls so Brady has fresh legs if need be. I get having continuity in our starting line up, but I believe our team is mature enough and intelligent enough to adapt game to game. Frankly they better be if we want to make tourney run.

I truly hope Brady finds his stroke because we need it badly, but it does feel like we are trying to force him into a role he's not built for. Frankly very few people in this world are build to play center and shoot 3's. It's a tough ask. Maybe he is an exception come March when it really matters!

Ada I'll do my best to post more. I can't believe I signed up 12 years ago. Yeesh that flew by.

There's been a lot of great points in this thread. Regardless of what the solution is, I think we all agree that Brady hitting shots will help this team tremendously.

Hopefully, his antidote will be playing the Cowboys. He is averaging 15.3 points against OSU and 51% from 3 (23-45). In home games against them, he is averaging 24.3 points and 54% (14-26).

Good stuff, C-mac. Post more! We take all opinions here.

I was not high on Vic out of high school because of the whole mess surrounding his senior "season", but he's the rebounding light at the end of the tunnel. I wish he'd see more floor time, especially when you consider how many rebounds he'd snag while picking up his five fouls.

I wonder if he's kin to abd?

Just watching Brady and looking at his numbers, I really think his health is the giant issue.

The best indicator of athleticism for someone like Brady is dunks and close fg%

Freshman: 23 dunks, 68% close fg% (+4.6 OBPM)
Sophomore: 25 dunks, 65% close fg% (+4.7 OBPM)
Junior: 17 dunks, 65% close fg% (+6.2 OBPM)
Senior: 3 dunks, 57% close fg% (+2.5 OBPM)

He's just not right physically. :-(

best +/- in the osu game was brady ... +8

worst was kur -16

supposedly...read it here...lol. He actually had a separated lung..because of a hard hit under the bucket..(I think first TT game?) instead of covid...but who knows.

Thanks, Boulder. I thought Brady looked a lot better on Saturday. Hopefully he can keep stacking positive results to get out of his slump for good.

Brady played well in Stillwater and it wasn’t just his shooting... I thought he was more active and tough than he’s been in months. He put forth a really great effort and it was nice to see. Would have loved to see that last three fall, but he even with that miss he was our best player on Monday night. Even though we’ve proven capable of winning without him contributing, I think we are past that point now. Clock has struck midnight for this team. Now, our only hope is for our best players to play like it.

I’ve been as critical of Manek as anyone. I even compared him to Bookie Radley-Hiles which is the ultimate insult for an OU athlete. That said, he was very good last night. He’s only got a handful of games left at OU. Let’s hope he plays like that in every single one.

Brady Manek was active on both ends of the floor last night, playing like he was a team leader and one of if not our best player. I’ll take 20 points on 4-9 shooting from three, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, a block and 2 steals in every game and be thrilled with the results!

This was the Brady Manek we were all hoping to see!

Unfortunately, something tells me Brady comes out of a funk and another player will enter it.

You may be right. That seems to be a pattern in the last few games. Not that long ago this team was firing on all cylinders. KSU changed that by taking us out of our game and muddying it up to take away our mojo. Nothing has been the same since that game, and maybe we were never as good as we wanted to believe. We were winning with more heart and hustle than skill.

Another pattern we can’t deny. This decline at the end of the season! To me, that is more troubling than anything else.

KSU provided the blue print and osu copied it with better athletes. Get up on us in the perimeter and take away our 3 man weave. Then osu went zone and we were still trying to set screens on offense. It's like at times we only have one offensive set and if that gets shut down we have no idea what to do.

We weren't as good as our ranking indicated. We caught lightning in a bottle for a few weeks but our issues have really been exposed the last few games.
