Casey Arent commits to OU

Arent did spend a year as a grayshirt. That basically means he doesn't enroll in classes full time and isn't on athletic scholarship, which doesn't start his five-year NCAA eligibility clock. Grayshirts have some access to practice/training facilities, but aren't technically on the team. His grayshirt year was during the 2008-09 season. He then played as a freshman and sophomore at the junior college level.

The grayshirt year basically has zero impact on how much time he has left now. All it really means is he had an extra year in the weight room to help bulk up, which he did quite nicely. But he still only has two seasons to play. The only possible way this could impact his career at OU is if he needs to redshirt. The grayshirt year retained that possibility... but if he needs to take a redshirt year now it was kind of pointless to bring him in.

I dont understand this take.... Not every kid can come in here and play, whats wrong with him redshirting? If he can contribute the next two years, whats wrong with that?

Unless you think we are automatically going to get another 6'10 guy next year that can play...

We need him now. Osby and Fitz are both 6-8. We get M'Baye the next season. If he can play and I don't think we would have offered him if Kruger had concerns about that, he will make a major difference inside in 11-12.

Kruger has time to recruit some good guys to take care of later years.

Arent has said he's prepared to play right away. Looks like Coach Kruger swayed him.

Nice.

A post depth chart of Osby, Fitz, Washington, and Arent should be adequate. Then we swap out M'Baye for Washington next year.

I agree we need a post like Arent right now. But some in other threads saying he'll start over Fitzgerald, I would say hold on.

Fitzgerald is only a Junior now and he was our 2nd best scorer last year. He might lead this team in scoring. It just depends on how good Osby is at scoring and if Pledger is consistent. But with Fitzgerald we have 3 or 4 guys that can really score. Osby should score around 14 a game. Pledger should score around 12-14 a game. Last year Fitz scored about 13 a game. He could be the best post scorer we have. It's possible to have 3 guys score 15 a game in the lineup. And then Clark has the potential to score too. Saying Arent is starting over Fitzgerald is crazy at this point. We need all the points we can get from the starting lineup. We could see maybe Clark go to the bench so we could have scoring off the bench and have Arent starting with Osby and Fitz as 3/4.

Being that Fitz can't stay out of foul trouble I bet OU can use both guys.

Fitz will start at center next year.

We are still recruiting a high school big man for next year.

Arent, I assume will not start over Fitz or Osby...

Probably not but he can come in and hopefully give 20 solid minutes a game. If Fitz is getting killed, Kruger has the ability to sit him. Capel did not have the ability to sit Fitz this season. He was the only guy that could score in the paint. Hopefully that is not going to be a problem this year.

Additionally, If Osby can play a few minutes a game (say 10) on the wing, OU can actually go big at times with Osby, Fitz and Arent in the game at the same time. That really wasn't possible last year.

What's wrong with it is it's unlikely that he'll ever contribute if right now he's so far away from it that he needs to sit out the year.

Don't usually want to redshirt juco players. They are generally tested at a higher level and if they can't contribute in their first year then just go ahead and take a high school kid for a project player.
