Charge Circle (Thank God)

Yes!

The charge circle seems like a total no-brainer rule change... just like the change a few years ago to move the 3-point arc out.

Do it!

They pretty much already had an imaginary one anyway. This just makes too much sense and should have been done a long time ago.

I know I'm in the minority, but I don't really care for the circle. If a dude's heal is barely on the line, is that really less of a good defensive play? I don't hate the circle, just don't think it's necessary.

I see your point, but let's face it...the speed of the game is such that these old geezers (refs) need SOMETHING to help them out. A guy camping under the basket and drawing charges is a HUGE pet peeve of mine...

If someone's toe is barely on the 3-point line, is that really less of a good shot?

It's about time they added this rule. There is nothing more abused in college basketball than the under the basket flop called for the home team by attention seeking officials.

Wasn't a bad shot but it wasn't good enough.

Any rule that makes it easier for an official to make the right call is good for the game.

I'm with those who feel that the charge/block circle is long overdue. :woot

This is fine with me, but I think NBA refs get too caught up in where the defender's feet are and don't realize he's moving or leaning to draw the charge...

That pretty much smashes (no pun intended) WTSooners case...

The entire game is made up of lines. What if you are on the free throw line? The 3pt line? The out of bounds line? I mean, you have to honor that.

Teams like Texas A&M and OSU (they are the worst from what I have seen) literally make a living taking charges with their heads in the net. They rotate around real quick and at times make it nearly impossible to even get a layup on them because they are just standing there under the rim waiting to take a charge.

Now they will actually have to play real defense and not just be waiting for the offensive player to run them over trying to make a layup.

Also, if you are within the charge circle its not a defensive play, its lazy. You allowed a guy to get all the way to the rim and got bailed out by a cheesy call.

I guess I'd rather see a guy take a charge "inside the circle", then watch defenders have to ole' the offensive player, allowing a layup. The NBA gets away with this b/c there are athletic shot blockers all over the place, that can still alter that layup. In the college game, that doesn't exist. I really think it'll either lead to a bunch of extra foul calls (blocking), or a bunch of easy layups. Neither of which is good for the game, IMO.

At the same time though i have to agree with ABD that a guy camping right under the front of the rim to take a charge is not good for the game either. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation

I keep hearing that, but I don't recall seeing it very often. Maybe my definition of "right under the rim", and other peoples', is different. I just know that I have ZERO problem with a guy taking a charge in the area that part of the arc will encompass.

Fouls are a gigantic problem in the college game... I mean, how many times do we see a charge and then a ticky-tack foul and all of a sudden you have a starter on the bench 3 minutes into the game?

Anything they can do to call less fouls in college basketball will be good for them, especially charging. They call charges way too much and smaller teams without shot blockers exploit the rule and take charges under the rim.

Right now you have college teams scoring in the 40's and 50's very regularly. Thats because the best players get in foul trouble, total fouls called gets out of control, they call charges all the time that will now be "and 1's", and there just isnt enough space out there.

I dont know how anyone could be really happy with the current product right now. Nobody is, and thats why they are making changes.

Blah. Not that big of deal. Not that many people takes charges under the rim anyways.
I would rather see them get rid of the idiotic one and done rule. Go back and let hs kids go straight to the pros if they want to. Didn't hurt the game then.

If you don't see it very often, then why do you think it's going to result in a ton of easy layups?

The only plays that result in "ole defense" will be the plays that were previously guys camping out under the basket hoping for a charge.

IMO it'll mostly result in guys actually trying to make a play on the ball and less worrying about taking a charge at the basket. Good for the game as far as I'm concerned.
