CJ Cole

Weird.. me thinks something went interestingly with med school.. or maybe he wants a masters degree first.

Dude is your typical walk on. Id rather have mankins than cole talentwise, but cole is a practice post body

Why can't he be a first year med school student playing on the basketball team? I know they have some early afternoon classes. The med school is in OKC but its not that far from Lloyd Noble. I'm guessing Lon wanted his maturity and leadership in the locker room.... and practice court.

Athletes can't take academic scholarships.

They can get pell grants and such

this is not quite correct ... .they can get a full academic scholarship .. but they still take up one of the 13 athletic scholarship spots ..

this is also the case in a few other circumstances ...

ie a baseball scholarship (no matter the %) player that wants to play football also can't practice or be any part of the football team the first year on campus or they count as one of the 85 scholarship players even though they are not on football scholarship ...

hope this makes sense ....

one reason this matters is it effects where the scholarship money comes from ..

the school academic or from the athletic dept. (which actually writes a check to the school for each athlete's tuition)

It's almost like CJ is coming back as a graduate assistant. With 2 open scholarships I don't have a problem with it, plus CJ gets his first year of med school paid for. LK brings in a mature kid with good work habits on and off the court. Win-Win.

there is 0% chance he is in med school while playing bball at OU

Cause he would fail out of med school if he tried to play basketball while doing it.

It wouldn't be wise for Cole to start medical school while playing another year for OU, in particular if he wants a top notch residency. He can simply defer his acceptance until next year.

Med takes 30 hours a semester on your transcript. Actual time is much more. There is absolutely no chance to do both. I can't imagine a meaningful minute this season but LK must want the leadership on the team.

Maybe CJ is finishing a double-major this year and enjoying life as a student for 365 more days before getting down to business with Med school?

Medical school will always be there. This is his last chance to play for OU.

Maybe he didn't get into med school, or the med school he wanted?

Can't imagine it was all lined up for him as planned, and he decided to return for hoops.

He was accepted to many many med schools. LK called him and asked him to help out another year. Hence why he already participated in senior night.

He got married and was ready to start his next chapter until the phone rang. Everyone from the team was there expect buddy and isiah (draft stuff).

I'm all for living it up in the moment but delaying your future to be just a walk on is very interesting

Wow, we must need some leadership badly!!

It's a team game! Likeable smart hardworking 5th year seniors who know the ropes and high character.

Those are always needed badly esp for a 12th man!

I agree.... I hope he contributes and is a great mentor.

I remember some chatter that the team chemistry collapsed in 2009-2010 with no Taylor Griffin in the locker room. You need guys like that.

I am pretty sure Evan Gatewood (mid 80s football player- linebacker) played his final year while gong to law school. So I think a guy could do it but it would be challenging. Classes are in OKC and the work load is pretty difficult.

Exactly. It is also just silly to act like CJ can't play basketball. CJ is an excellent basketball player. He just isn't an excellent basketball player in the tiny universe of major conference scholarship players.
