Coach Capel

FWIW, as an OSU fan I would much rather face a Capel team than a Sampson coached team. I never liked Sampson, but he did get the most out of his teams. How many of Sampson's team didn't even make the NIT?

He miss the Post Season 5 of his 7 years at Washington State. After that every team he coached at OU and Indiana made at least the NIT

That was my point. Sampson was solid at OU. You can't really say that about Capel.

oh i know that was your point, i just looked up the stat for you since it seemed to me you were interested in it.

Capel is building from scratch right now. It usually takes about 3-4 years to build a program from nothing.

I guess the natural question is should a coach be "starting from scratch" or "building a program from nothing" during his fifth season at the school?

It seems to me that's about the year when a coach should really be taking off... he would have a full team of his own recruits with everyone running the same system for the entire time they had been there.

The very fact that he's needing to "start from scratch" in his fifth year is more of an indictment than anything else.

Exactly, you can throw away the blame of Tubbs first year as building from scratch because he basically really was. He got lucky to have Tisdale come in early on and turned the program around. But Blake Griffin was one of the best ever at OU and he basically did nothing to expand from that. Billy always had a style that attracted players.

Let's face it the problem with OU now is we really don't have a style. We don't have a thing to pin on that will work. Under Billy it was running as much as we could. Using defense to turn into offense. With Kelvin we always had hard nosed defense and solid rebounding. This has created much discussion the past few weeks but what is our style? We haven't really had one.

my issue with this thread is there are about 57294860 threads says "capel" "Coach Capel" or something. cant we merge em or just all post on the same thread? sheesh. btw i love capel! :)

And don't forget that Billy had success before Tisdale arrived. We went 9-18 in '81, but posted a 20-win season in '82 that was topped off with a trip to the NIT semifinals. THEN Wayman showed up.

1982 was also the scene of the infamous "Irvine" game....supposedly the most raucous of all OU BBall crowds.

Was that the game with Ethan Aroni? If so, I was there (it was just a few weeks before I moved to NYC).

Very well said. Starting over in your 5 th year is unacceptable.
