Coach Doug Gottlieb

His whole family is in the coaching profession. While the head coach oversees practice, most of the offensive/defensive drills and schematics are ran by the assistants. Head coaches are CEO's not VPs, they determine the general direction of a program without getting too mucked up in the weeds.
Not saying he would do an amazing job, but I would bet on him over some of the boneheads working in the collegiate ranks.

Perhaps you need to attend one of Kruger's open practices to learn how involved a head coach can be with day to day intricacies of practice. I suspect you would have a different perspective.

See the portion I responded too and it will provide better context...Kruger isn't going to class to check on attendance, grades, putting up with general administrative duties. Assistants have specific jobs on scouting certain opponents, then provide details and analysis for the HC to make a decision, just like a CEO would. No different than a tech software CEO spending time with his lead CTO and finding out what exactly the product can and cannot do, recommendations to fix it, etc.

Of course Kruger is going to be in the practice and having a hands on impact, he only gets so much face time on the court with his team each week mandated by the NCAA. That is only 2-3 hours of his day, it's not like he is making each player's strength & conditioning program.

Doubt his ego is bigger than Calipari, Pitino, Boeheim, Miller, Crean, etc.

Agreed. But comparing Doug to some of the best coaches in the country who have nothing to prove is not what I would call a valid argument.

Gottlieb would need good assistants who can help him through the learning years. Calipari, Pitino, Boeheim, Miller and Crean are smart enough to hire good assistants, because it makes their job easier. But it's not as if they have to do it to be successful.

Maybe he could get Capel to help him out.

Every program needs good assistants to be successful. Doubt Gottlieb would let his ego get in the way of that, his brother is an assistant at Cal and his father has put countless players at the collegiate level, mostly through dealing with assistants. Knowing you need to hire quality people and doing just that, though, are two different things.

Maybe he could get Capel to help him out.

Maybe so. Capel didn't surround himself with the best assistants available to him, plus he made the mistake of not taking the advice of the good ones he did hire, and it cost him. Hopefully he learned from the experience.

I think Doug could do a very good job but it's so unlikely he gets that job. I really hope Ford stays 3 more years.

Proven track record as a head coach doesn't always mean much. Its more the right coach that fits the right job. I could see Doug dealing with Stoolwater better than Calapari could.

I know it makes me a bad person, but as soon as I saw the UNC court rush after they beat Dook last night, I remarked to my husband that I hope Capel got ran over by a few overzealous Heels... not injure him, just twist the knife a little bit deeper in the sting of defeat, yknow? :D

Dickie V didn't think too highly of UNC fans rushing the court.

I liked it myself. One reason I watch Duke games: To see them get beat. Rushing the court to rub it in is icing on the cake for me!

It made me think back to when OU rushed the field after being Nebbish in 2000 football. A program like OU football shouldn't rush the field, right? Well, they had a lot of years of suffering and finally had reason to celebrate, so it was warranted.

btw... those two really, really hate each other. i dropped by a duke board to see the fallout and they had a lot of mean UNC farks up :)

the problem is that duke's record is like one game better than UNC. it wasn't that big of an upset

Guess I'm in the minority, but I like Duke and Coach K a lot more than I like a lot of the other top tier programs and coaches.
