Coaching or Recruiting?

I posted this at the end of the OU-Baylor thread , but decided to start a new topic with it. Baylor lost everyone but Sims from last year. They are 9-1 in the conference and 19-3 overall, with the 2 non conference losses to UCONN and in 4 OTs to Kentucky. We have everyone back from last year except JoAnna. We are 5-5 in conference and 14-9 overall. Is Mulkey a better coach, a better recruiter, or is there another reason?

I would answer the question this way...I think Kim has a better staff which contributes to better recruiting and better coaching decisions. JMHO

Recruiting ! I sure hope We have a good 2016 and 2017 class,
Cause it is loaded with Talent And Athleticism

I lean more towards the coaching aspect in that a great recruit helps but if they don't listen and learn anything then they are worthless. They have to buy into the system and adapt. Great coaching can bring out talent in players even if they were not highly recruited (Nina Davis). Motivation is a powerful tool.

You can have all the talent in the world, but if you can't coach or harness it might as well let the kids call the plays.

We were in the Sweet Sixteen last year and we lost only one significant contributor. I find it hard to believe that talent level is the problem.

Kim is the second winningest active coach trailing only Geno. Her winning percentage is .822 while Sherri is currently at .679.

It's possible Whitney's bench player coach leadership role was under estimated last year.
McFarland was obviously a bigger "glue" piece than anyone realized.

It is obvious that the talent is there. We lost Joanna who at this time last year was the focus of half the complaints on this board. Griffin and Vegas were All-Americans of one type or another. Morgan is a nice player, although not athletic enough to compete with the point guards of the top teams. Her forte had been judgement, until this year.

I think these are talented players with good character, the type that you want on your team. Unfortunately, there is not that girl, like Maddie, who likes to play a bit rough, the bring it on type. There is not that leader who would get in Sims' face and let her know that she was in for a night. If anything, T'Ona is more of a leader-type than Morgan.

We may have a future leader among our freshmen. Might Gioya or T'Ona be that player? How about Ortiz? We keep forgetting that Penzo was the leader of her Puerto Rican team, at 16, and she made the same All-Star team that Lauren Cox did. Is she the leader that we need?

I've been frustrated in recent years with our football team. We have talent. We have had a lot of very high draft choices by the NFL, three of the top ten. But, we didn't win it all. I felt that it was because of the lack of a true leader, the type of player who wants the ball with thirty seconds left to win the game.

I think we have made it very clear that we don't have that leader. We have lost three overtime games in which a leader who could handle the ball would have never let it get to OT. We had the ball and the lead, even against Marist. We didn't have the player who demanded the ball and the win. After the OSU game, I thought it might be Sharane. But, it didn't look that way last night.

I don't think Baylor is that good. Sims can play, especially if you aren't allowed to defend her. She may end up with a higher scoring average than shooting percentage. Davis is one I would like to have. But, is there someone else that has really stood out? I like OSU's personnel better. But, Sims is that tough kid, as is Davis. They want to play.

Kim? I don't care what she wins. IF OU were to hire Kim, I would become a Notre Dame fan. I don't think she should be permitted in amateur ball.

Syb,

You really make some fine points. I think, however, Morgan has improved her play this year as a decision maker (think fewere turnovers and stupid passes). I lament, though, how she has consistently reduced her number of shots, not only this year but since she was a sophomore.

I am not completely clear on whether you are saying we don't have the players who are floor leaders, that Sherri has had some substandard recruiting years or if there is another position you are taking. You think the talent is there...but...what?

Perhaps you have many opinions that mingle together.

That's what I have. I think Sherri has had some poor analysis of player potential, and, as a result, has had some poor recruiting classes. I think she is a good coach and can coach the crap out of guards.

But I think she and the staff have trouble recruiting and growing bigs. If you think about it, Griffin has grown more than any big since, Ashley. Courtney grew zero, IMO. Abi never had the chance. Cloman, Zander, Jeffcoat -- all busts. Verdict is definitely still out on Kay-Kay.

I lean toward the thinking that our poor recruiting has led us to this point.

I believe Sherri has a narrow mold for a player she will accept and she's simply not willing to go outside of that. When she has, that person hasn't lasted long.

She wants a person of religious, strong moral character. Girls who might not be the best player (although she will certainly take those, if she can get them), but who are willing to go to Bible study every week, will go to class, walk pretty much the straight and narrow, and not make her or the program look bad. Then ability and being a stellar basketball player comes into play.

The times she has let a girl go after one or more chances, it's because they strayed from that rigid criteria.

Now, don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with any of that. I applaud her searching out those types of girls. But that simply isn't women's basketball any longer. You cannot limit yourself and program like that and expect to win the Big Dance.

I also think Sherri is tougher, more unforgiving and demanding than many folks realize. She's a wonderful person, but like any coach, there's a drill sergeant in there that emerges when no one else can see. That may be a part o what is going on.

Wouldn't trade her as a coach, though, except for McGraw or Vandaveer.

But I think most of this tumultuous season is squarely on her shoulders.

I also think she may conduct a thorough self, staff and squad review, maybe more tough than in recent years, after this season is over. I don't have any proof of that other than I think it won't take her as long as it did Stoops to realize a couple of wheels are off track and things need to change.

I think Sherri has known who the team leader for this year's team would be when she offered her as a freshman in high school. After almost losing to Australia this summer, she said she wished that she had Morgan Hook as her point guard to help protect the lead. I think Morgan has tried.

For some reason, it hasn't been working. The team is not playing like they have leaders. It isn't a matter of how effective the leadership is, or why. It simply isn't working, and I think that is an absolute shock to Sherri, just as it is to me.

Yet, we often struggle until the end of the season. Somehow, you just have to look at the fact that this team lost one player and think it will come together. Vegas has to begin hitting shots. Morgan has to begin playing like Morgan. Williams will finally learn to be aggressive without reaching out to block someone's wrist instead of the ball. It is there. So, let's just say that we don't exhibit a team with leadership------yet.

many have said Sherri recruits the person vs the player so, I'm sure that's why for every Aaryn we get there will be a Lyndsey Colman..

It pains me to say that Sherri doesn't do a lot with developing players. I agree Courtney was the same player for 4 years, Amanda couldn't shoot coming in to Norman and couldn't shoot going out. Campbell seems to be going thru the samething, she still doesn't have a consistent outside shot. I have been impressed with the Footwork of Kay-kay who has been working with pam decosta the new post coach who had something to do with the great jr year Griffin had.
