Combined Football & Basketball Success: Top-25 Schools

The top 3 makes sense IMO. Texas was a surprise at 4 since their basketball hasn't really had over-the top success. Obviously football is what got us to #3, but a final four and two elite 8 appearances also helps.

Yes and no. Football has been better for Bama over that time, but they are what, #12? Our basketball program has been steady, save a few of the Capel years. Simply making the tourney, even with limited success, adds up those points.

Like I've said many times, OU men's basketball is the most unknown successful program in the nation, and especially in Oklahoma. I'll bet many in Oklahoma don't even know that OU has big series leads on pretty much everyone in the Big 12, except obviously for Kansas (and, OU does lead K-State by several games, too).

And of course, the Bedlam record (131-95, in OU's favor) is the most un-reported stat there is.

I remember a few years ago getting into an arguement with my older brother who went to OU about OU leading the bedlam series in basketball. He went to OU and thought I was wrong.

Very true and thankfully, your campaign to make people aware is good! I'm sure the media (OKC and Tulsa) read these and other boards so maybe they will become enlightened although I won't hold my breath!!!

Now, if you would just recognize the women, they have been to three final fours in this century. No other team in the top five has been in one. With the women, OU is #1.

Back in 2003 (or so), I remember a direct quote from Dick Vitale regarding college coaches: "Bob Stoops, Kelvin Sampson and Sherri Coale. The best trifecta in America, baby!"

As for the rankings, I would have done some subtracting of points when a team does not make the postseason. That's a better indication of a true football/basketball combo school. Kansas really has no business being #8 or even in the top 25 for that matter. Yes, they had one good football season in the past 15 years, but they are the perennial doormat of the conference. Duke being #9 and Kentucky #12 are also a joke. Those three schools are ecstatic if they can get to 6 wins in a season...though all three usually come up short.

My younger brother started going to Bedlam games even before he became an OU student (when I was an OU underclassman). He has a pretty good grasp of the basketball rivalry.

I never argued with anyone out here about it, but some people in our local (Albuquerque/Santa Fe) OU Club were talking about Bedlam and automatically assumed that OSU had the better record against us. Of course, I wasn't about to let that comment stand. I was nice about it, and they were actually glad to know that OU led the series by 34 games at the time.

I do know that one of the recent hires by 107.7 FM in OKC was a guy who worked out here for several years in Albuquerque. He is an OU grad but always tried to act like he wasn't a "Sooner homer," and I even heard him say that OU was a middle-of-the-pack Big 12 hoops program. I couldn't even believe it. Part of that was that the guy hated Kelvin, but that's still absurd.

OU has also had some good baseball teams, has perhaps the best softball program in the nation, and elite gymnastics. OU is a much more than just a football school.

But, they were ranking according to two sports, football and basketball---simply ignoring the fact that one of the sports has women.

I agree. When Duke and KU are in the top 10 for combined sports something is wrong. I would personally argue OSU does a better job at combined sports than either of those schools and OSU does not have anywhere near the basketball success of either of those schools.

(I know Duke had a good football season last year)

I mentioned the guy who 107.7-FM in OKC hired away from the Albuquerque "Sports Animal." He also once said on the air out here, without citing the numbers, that OSU dominated Bedlam in men's basketball. I had a good enough relationship with him that I e-mailed him the link that showed that OU was actually up by 34 games at the time. He did acknowledge that I'd been right, but he based his "logic" on the fact that OU didn't do that great against the Aggies when he was at OU (circa 1993-95).

It made me appreciate my own OU days a bit more - OU was 7-2 in Bedlam hoops from the '77 season until '80. And one of those was a one-pointer, sandwiched between two OU double-digit routs that year (one in Norman, the other in the long-defunct "Big 8 Holiday Tournament" in KC).

...and you would be right about OSU over Kansas. The first thing I thought of to make this article legit was to subtract 10 points for every losing season (in either sport) since 2000. The one exception is if a team goes to a bowl with a 6-6 record and loses. Using those numbers, Kansas drops all the way to 64 points while OSU only drops to 76. That makes sense since the Pokes are at least "competitive" in both sports...and OU would still be comfortably in the top 5 where they belong.

When I was at OU (late 70's until spring semester of '80), the "big four" spectator sports were football, men's basketball, wrestling and baseball. I remember in '79 that we got at least a share of three of the Big 8 titles in those four sports, and we might have won the '79 wrestling title in the conference tournament. I do know we won baseball and men's basketball outright, and tied Corn for the regular season football title (then won the Orange Bowl rematch). Those were good times.

I'm so proud over the years of what OU has done in spectator sports, not just football.
