Sooners Lead Academic All-Big 12 First Team

Whitney Hand's 4.0 GPA leads all conference student-athletes.

Feb. 12, 2013

NORMAN, Okla. -- Five University of Oklahoma women's basketball players were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Sophomore Sharane Campbell (zoology), junior Nicole Griffin (multidisciplinary studies), senior Joanna McFarland (chemistry and biochemistry) and graduates Whitney Hand (human relations), Jasmine Hartman (human relations) represented the Sooners on the 35-member academic team.

Hand was one of just two Big 12 student-athletes nominated with a 4.00 grade point average. Hand, a two-time Capital One Academic All-District honoree, and McFarland earned first team selections for the third time in their careers.

A total of 26 student-athletes earned first team recognition, while nine individuals comprised the second team. West Virginia led all teams with six total honorees, while Oklahoma paced the first team with five members.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.

The 22nd-ranked Sooners host No. 24 Iowa State Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. for their annual Pack the Place Pink game promoting women's cancers awareness and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund's Play4Kay initiative.

So five of seven eligible Sooners made the first team. The two that didn't were Morgan and Aaryn - work harder, girls!

I'm petty enough to want to see how Baylor did. They had two:
Sune Agbuke and Makenzie Robertson.

Well, I guess since Makenzie was of the right age to be on Griner's AAU team AND she made the Academic All-Big 12, her scholarship WAS worth it! :ez-roll:

Sherri said yesterday the team GPA was just a hair below a 3.0. I believe she said 2.98.

Baylor points: 1875
Robertson and Agbuke (59+24=83)

Baylor minutes: 4600
Robertson and Agbuke (247 + 108=355)

I'm sure her Magna history fumed at that tiny detail too :D

Seriously though, grades are not important, preparing for future success is, and since I haven't heard any horror stories about our alums going crazy (quite the contrary, with some military vets and even our NFL Network rep) we must be doing lots right.

From the start this has been a hallmark of her teams. First and foremost the guys are going to college to get an education. Kudos to everyone.
