not just that...but at some point many of these parents are trying to get their kids in a situation for some college looks...and if the HS coach is a cheesehead then they may want some other alternative.
It makes a HUGE difference when that is what you do for a living. I AM a high school coach and if you spend a lot of time developing a kid, checking on his grades, tutoring and advising him and someone else comes in making promises to a kid to get him to come to his school (and yes, sometimes they have a better situation but it is often BECAUSE they cheat and recruit other people's kids)...then it makes a big difference.
I had a future DI post player recently....he left my program to go to a private school. I talked to him before he left and pointed out that he was probably going to be a role player at this new school whereas we showcased him (we ran most of our plays through the kid). I talked to college coaches non-stop about him, etc. Well, he went to the new school and averaged about 6-7 ppg (down from 17 ppg he averaged at our place).
Shady, cheating slime ball coaches make a mockery of high school athletics. So, yes...it makes a difference to some of us.
Flip that to Oklahoma....how about Kelvin Sampson....He made OU look bad....then left. Left the program in a bad position. But it doesn't matter right? Image of the university and the program makes a difference to me.
I guess if you work behind a desk somewhere, are a college student typing from your dorm room, or you work in an office....then non of it means squat to you.
I think Frank Martin is shady. He has a shady background and he showed no remorse and took basically no responsibility for cheating, even after he made his school, his program and high school coaches look bad. He blamed it on the 'system'. That is a cop out. I am glad he is doing well now because I have no ill will toward him. I just have that nagging feeling that if he didn't care about rules before I doubt SERIOUSLY he cares much about them now.
