dang...every time I watch KState play I like Frank more and more

thx sys ... I tend to agree with this version a lot more. Not only because it's more friendly to Frank - but because you CANNOT compare HS recruiting to college infractions. It's not even close to being the same dynamic. I can come up with a dozen reasons why HS recruiting is actually better for the players by far.

Yep, I could care less where kids go to HS to play ball as long as they aren't getting paid or special treatment to get there. If a parent wants to drive their kid 30 miles every day to a different school why should it matter?

not just that...but at some point many of these parents are trying to get their kids in a situation for some college looks...and if the HS coach is a cheesehead then they may want some other alternative.

It makes a HUGE difference when that is what you do for a living. I AM a high school coach and if you spend a lot of time developing a kid, checking on his grades, tutoring and advising him and someone else comes in making promises to a kid to get him to come to his school (and yes, sometimes they have a better situation but it is often BECAUSE they cheat and recruit other people's kids)...then it makes a big difference.

I had a future DI post player recently....he left my program to go to a private school. I talked to him before he left and pointed out that he was probably going to be a role player at this new school whereas we showcased him (we ran most of our plays through the kid). I talked to college coaches non-stop about him, etc. Well, he went to the new school and averaged about 6-7 ppg (down from 17 ppg he averaged at our place).

Shady, cheating slime ball coaches make a mockery of high school athletics. So, yes...it makes a difference to some of us.

Flip that to Oklahoma....how about Kelvin Sampson....He made OU look bad....then left. Left the program in a bad position. But it doesn't matter right? Image of the university and the program makes a difference to me.

I guess if you work behind a desk somewhere, are a college student typing from your dorm room, or you work in an office....then non of it means squat to you.

I think Frank Martin is shady. He has a shady background and he showed no remorse and took basically no responsibility for cheating, even after he made his school, his program and high school coaches look bad. He blamed it on the 'system'. That is a cop out. I am glad he is doing well now because I have no ill will toward him. I just have that nagging feeling that if he didn't care about rules before I doubt SERIOUSLY he cares much about them now.

well, when you're trying to get your basketball/baseball-playing son a few looks and you live in a football state then you often BEG for a coach who actually cares about your sport to recruit him. I've been on the side of this one many times...not to mention my dad would have never received his scholarship if he hadn't been recruited by a "local power" in the hills back in the day.

2 sides to every story my friend.

I'm not saying anything negative about you coolm or saying you're wrong and I am right...but I AM saying that part of the problem in high school athletics (and maybe society in general) is that people ACCEPT this attitude and the unethical behavior of some guys as "helping kids" when MANY (Im not saying ALL) of these guys are basically using kids to improve their own image and careers. There are WAYYYY too many QUALITY coaches and programs who are getting stepped on by these snakes.

If a player can play...recruiters will find them. I, as a coach, feel like it is my duty to make calls for kids, send emails out to colleges, etc. I know not all coaches are like that...it is just a shame that people feel like they NEED to go play for some of these shady guys to get a scholarship.

That is all I'm sayin'

Martin has done a great job at KSU, better than most predicted.

I laugh at his use of the "F' bomb in the huddle when he talks to his players, it cracks me up. His players seem to love him and play hard for him and that's a big part of the battle with today's kids.
