Defensive improvements key Oklahoma hoops’ rout of Ball State

The fact that Ball State didn't score as many points as Omaha, doesn't alter the fact Ball State missed about 6-10 shots in the paint last night. We are still not doing a very good job of blocking out. It's early and we have a lot of new pieces so there's still plenty of time to get things worked out.

Ball State coach felt our full court pressure hurt them and prevented them from really getting into their offense.

I hope we continue to do that. We have 11 (12 with Doolittle) who can play at this level. I am including Polla because he clearly is becoming more assertive and more comfortable with using his size. Not only does the pressure help our defense but also jump starts our offense. By the end of the game there should be some very tired legs on the other team.

A team like North Carolina may carve up our pressure defense now but if we keep working on it we could be able to even handle the elites by tournament time.

A pressure defense is not as much about steals as about causing the other team to rush their offense and miss shots they normally hit. You are going to get burned occasionally but on balance a talented pressure defense team will come out ahead.

The pressure like NC said... It dictates tempo, they want to play fast and feel they can play fast better than their opponents. Yes that does mean we will give up a little more scoring but as youve seen so far... We are scoring a bunch!

2 games in. Team looks good and is going to get better. We are going to give many good teams trouble. Enjoy it.

According to Kenpom, we are 14th out of 351 teams in adjusted defensive efficiency....that's pretty damn good thus far. What makes this stat a little deceptive is that we also play at an incredibly fast pace (adjusted tempo is 19th)....thus the other team gets more possessions on average.

Boom. There you go. So if continue to score in the 80-100 range we may give up 70-85 and still be a really good team!

Fans want exciting basketball... They are about to get it for the remainder of LK career here!
