Game 10 - OKC AT PAYCOM #13 OKLAHOMA (9-0) vs. OKLAHOMA STATE (6-2) 7pm CST on ESPNU

did anyone else hear the announcer Tim Welsh say that Kobe and Duke are the 2 most efficient guards out of the portal so far? Anyone know what efficiency metrics he was referring to?

I heard the comment you are referring to but can’t remember if he said the two most efficient or two of the most efficient. Either way, I wonder if he was referring to actual metrics or just giving his opinion. I checked Evan Miya and those guys are ranked in the 240-260 range nationally. Fears is 87, for comparison. Would definitely be curious to hear if anyone else is aware of where they rank in other publicly available metrics.

Great ears and question! Best I can find is at EvanMiya using BPR.

I just listened to a discussion between three national writers that made me think back to the thread about whether teams need a GM. All three emphatically said yes. In addition to scheduling and NIL, they said the biggest role for the GM during the season is to spend tons of time evaluating almost every player in the country for portal purposes. Their point is that coaches don’t have the time to do that during the season, and that since most kids make their transfer decisions very quickly after the season, someone needs to do all the homework during the season. Not only do they need to evaluate the on-court stuff, but do background checks to find out if kids would be good fits for their program.

They said they spoke with one high major GM who said he starts the season with a list of about 2,500 players and gradually narrows it down to the kids who they legitimately would target if they enter the portal.

To me that a dobo job turns into a gm.

I’m all
For that.

Another big win for the conference tonight, Florida neutral site, Q-1 over UNC. South Carolina just gagged away a win in the last minute of regulation and is in OT against Clemson. Will never understand why teams don’t always foul up three with a few seconds left.

South Carolina pulled it out. The lowest NET team in the conference beating a ranked team.

Meanwhile, Drake … what a story. On the other side, KSU is more or less playing itself out of tournament contention barring an incredible turnaround in conference play. The Big 12 isn’t off to nearly the start everyone expected.

@StoopsBros and I have offered to be co-GMs during the portal season. We will see if OU Athletics reads the Hoops board...

Joking aside, it is a great idea and absolutely necessary. Will be interesting to see how it changes basketball. A coach can coach more, so it may lead to better talent evaluation, Coach/GM hires may flip in priority? GMs may be more valued in a few years.

Theo Epstein and Billy Beane come to mind.

We may need revisit those portal threads. Guessing they won’t be kind to some

Very true. I def had some hits and misses, I think. Being down on Elvis, but still not completely wrong there.

Achor Achor, wasn't planning on him getting kicked off a team. However, his numbers were solid-ish prior.
Dell'Orso, has been a solid player for Arizona and we should have taken him immediately.

I think we all know Fears has saved our season and we got lucky as hell there.

Here is the breakdown of guys we could/should have gotten and our current roster with my scoring system:

A few things to note:

-Hindsight, this is us trying to evaluate talent and levels of production in what may or may not fit with the Sooners plan.
-Fears is our biggest recruit, especially in the Moser era, hands down. Getting him saved his job and maybe our future.
-Dell'Orso was very under-rated and I wish we had him on our roster.
-Pedulla lived up to the hype, but not at the cost of not getting Fears.
-Overton is easily still a take bc of the years he had left to play.
-Garrison has been a big letdown, considering he is equal to Northweather's value. That being said, he gets way more playing time here and his numbers would be up.
-Kadary Richmond, was over-priced, but would still help this roster.
-Glenn Taylor Jr. getting hit to hard with my scoring.
-We still have Jones and Nwankwo which is scary to think...
-Wague's PER is nuts, but small spurts will do that. (he is over-valued here)

All that being said, Pedulla maybe helps in the portal if you grab him early to solidify the roster and grab Overton/Garrison.
But would I trade Pedulla for Fears? No.
Would I trade Dell'Orso for Goodine/Miles, yes.
Overton for them as well, yes.
Still, I am happy with our roster construction and think our portal turned out better than anticipated thanks to Fears.

Boulder, it is literally and factually historic how good the SEC has been in the non-conference (at least that is what some talking heads were saying on TV). Conference play is going to be a blood bath every night.

I hate the back-and-forth against you.

You bring good points.

BUT....you dig your heels in when messing up and argument.

Why die on a hill? You messed up, no big deal.

Admit....oh, yeah, that's right. It probably was like a home court advantage being held in NORTH CAROLINA.

No biggie. You get the 🤡 responses because you dig your heels into a bad argument.

Just my opinion.
