OU regents praise coach's integrity after 'tough call'

The Associated Press

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - John Blake's three-year run as Oklahoma's football coach ended Sunday when he was fired by the university's Board of Regents.

The Sooners won three of their final four games to finish 5-6 this season, but Blake's record of 12-22 represented the worst three-year stretch in school history. He had two years remaining on his contract.

"It takes longer to build a brick house than one made of sticks," said regents chairman Melvin Hall, who sought to keep Blake. "This was `Just win baby. That's it.' "

The regents voted 4-2 to remove Blake and begin an immediate search for the team's fourth coach since 1994.

"This is a wrenching decision for all of us," university president David Boren said after the board returned from a four-hour executive session.

Boren said afterward that the regents had to decide whether Blake was the right person to lead the program back to national prominence with the right kind of values.

"It goes without saying we have great confidence in his values," he said. "We had to make the decision based upon both factors and we simply made that tough call, that it was time for a change."

Blake, 37, did not attend the meeting and was not immediately available for comment.

I wonder who the two idiots were that voted to keep Blake?

I'm trying to figure out what this has to do with the basketball program. It certainly can't be a comparison of Blake to Capel because there isn't one. One of those guys could win with talent and the other couldn't. One of those guys has class and the other didn't.

Fixed it. :D

INTELLIGENT people don't try to make the comparison.

If those 2 people are still on the Board of Regents, Jeff has nothing to worry about.

Just win baby! lol

Wrenching! 12-22 and it took them four hours to make a wrenching decision. And people wonder why the basketball program is in the dumper.

:clap

In the future, I will not question DB's decisions. The man is a genius. In David I trust.

What exactly is the point here. I guess I dont get it.
