Downward trend

Three years ago I was all over Sherri for poor recruiting and being unable to sign the really big dogs.

She still can't close on a top 10, but the recruiting finally began taking an up-tick last year and may continue to if she's still around in 2017.

I liked the last class pretty well. The next 2-3 classes, if they all sign, could be as good as Sherri has had.

But 2017 is a long way off and what happens if we go completely in the dump this rest of this year and next.

My guess is 2015-17 won't be looking so great because those kids will probably sign elsewhere.

So no one can argue the original message but they attack the messenger.

Also if Sherri hates recruiting so much she should stop cashing the $90,000 monthly paychecks.

Romulus - of course we've had a downwards trend. I'm not denying that. It's the consistently and constantly pointing it out that gets a little old. When you coach somewhere as long as Coale has, you tend to have a few down years. And the moderator of this board is constantly taking subtle shots at our players & coaching staff. Some of us, not all of us, are tired of it. I decided to speak up. Just like I did when GOB was going through his routine on the old insider board.

Just look at the # of Final Fours with different personnel and different coaches and look at how many we'd been to before she got here. She knows what she is doing, and we will get back to where we need to be. Obviously not going to be this year. Duh. That's obvious. I get it. Everyone who watches our team gets it. That doesn't mean we're going to be in the same position in a couple of years.

If your argument is that Sherri Coale isn't Gino, then fine. You win. Congrats. She's not built that kind of program.

If you have a problem with her compensation, complain to Joe Castiglione.

The same people were making the same ignorant comments when we had the rough spell before the Paris twins came along. And then we went to a Final Four. And of course, people said it was all the Paris twins. Well, then she went to a Final Four and a couple more Sweet 16s without the Paris twins in the next few years.

We'll be back. And she'll silence all of the ignorance again.

You are correct! :)

I haven't really participated on this thread, because I don't really see a down ward trend. From 2009 to 2013 we actually were stagnant, but still all 20 plus win seasons. 2014 I thought we under achieved with a veteran team. We had 11 wins in conference except for one year and last year. Looking at our team now and the commits on the board, I see an upward trend. Regardless of this teams ending record this year, I think as a young team they will over achieve and make a lot of us eat our words, including me. Just sayin'.

On 24th of December OU was 5-5. Since then they have gone 13-4. What changed? Did Sherri suddenly start recruiting better and did she bring in those recruits in the last 2 months? Did she suddenly start teaching the fundamentals and developing players; something some on here think she's never been able to do?

Bay posted a couple of videos; one unedited showing Sherri and three composed young ladies in a press conference after a ball game and asked us to compare it to a production piece on Geno full of edits to make the subject as interesting as possible. The thing is, Sharane said in the OU video that she was having fun and loved playing, certainly doesn't sound like a player who is counting the days until she can get out of a "bad situation".

Last year's team was an anomaly; no one knows why although I have my suspicions. All other other teams seemed to have had good chemistry; this year's team has the best I've ever see. Sherri's two best teams unfortunately coincided with Geno's best team and under performed versus Louisville. There have been many teams that have over performed, especially since Sherri can't recruit; at all (according to some).

Much has been said about Sherri's lack of recruiting top players and her publicly stating she doesn't like to recruit. Sherri's biggest fault as a head coach is she cares too much. This is strictly my opinion; I've never met her; but she wants whats best for a person, even if that means the young lady chooses another program. Again, IMO, she recruits character first, basketball IQ second and skills third. Sometimes character and skills coincide (see Whitney Hand, Courtney Paris, Stacey Dales) and sometimes they don't (see Caton Hill and Joanna McFarland). We seem to be in a bubble where good character and skills are coinciding with the top players and so Sherri is getting her share of those top players. In the "lean years" where the top players don't have the character Sherri is looking for, OU won't have good recruiting in the eyes of many.

Sherri will never be Geno. Sherri will never be Pat. Sherri will never be Kim. OU will never have a Connecticut like program that is favored to win the championship every year. Sherri has built a program that is well respected, will be tough year in and year out and if the cards all fall in place will make it to the final four. She may never win a national championship, but she does build champions.

Nice.

Great post! If you compare Geno/UConn to any other women's coach/program, you could come to the same conclusion. Sherri is doing fine and has more quality depth than she ever has. Those that strongly dislike Sherri (and we've seen despite what is written on a forum) will find any nugget of negativity that they want to find and twist it any way they want. No one wants to win more than Sherri but she's going to do it her way. This is collegiate women's basketball not the WNBA (where only about .9% of players in college get to the WNBA). They really are supposed to receive an education in addition to playing basketball. Outside of football, men's basketball and probably baseball, very few student athletes, if any, will compete after their collegiate playing days have ended.

This very young team is playing like many of Sherri's past teams and I'm very excited about the future. I think Maddie and Vivi will be much improved next year as their injuries will have close to fully healed. These freshman and sophomores will be more seasoned and we're bringing in an outstanding player down low who will provide even more size and depth.

Sherri's not perfect in any way shape or form nor have I ever seen a poster say that she was. But she's one of the best and that can't be denied!

Much brouhaha in this thread, but 15 straight NCAA tourney bids, soon to be 16, don't come by accident. There are only three other programs in the country that have a longer streak of appearances.

Much of that is due to who Sherri is as a person. I love her to death.

She is why I became an OU women's basketball fan. She's as real as a person can be, what you see is what you get.
