East Central’s girls had motivation and fire in their eyes, but Booker T. Washington’s girls had a decided edge in experience.

That was enough to carry the 5A No. 3 Hornets to a 61-53, come-from-behind basketball win Tuesday over the fifth-ranked, archrival Cardinals in Green Country Conference basketball play in Nathan E. Harris Field House.

The rebuilding-but-improving Cards raced to leads of up to 11 points before B.T. Washington’s veterans took over.

Rhys Anderson, Camryn Fennell, Armani Reed and Khalan Richardson combined for 55 of their team’s points as the Hornets improved to 14-4 overall and took sole possession of first place in the league with an 8-0 mark.

East Central (11-7, 7-1) gets another chance when the teams meet at 5 p.m. Feb. 10 in the High School Hoops Classic at the BOK Center.

B.T. Washington beat the Cards twice last year to interrupt their string of three straight Green Country titles.

“That’s the first time it’s happened in a while and they wanted revenge,” first-year Hornets coach Rabe Leyva said.

East Central’s Jurnee Elliott scored 10 of her team-high 13 points in the first half and the Cards’ lead crested at 22-11 early in the second quarter. From there, the Hornets’ veterans started taking over.

Fennell hit a 3-pointer, Anderson kicked in five of her 22 points and Reed ended the half in a defensive flurry. She had a steal and layup, followed by another steal that set her up to make one of two foul shots. Suddenly, the Hornets’ deficit was down to 29-27.

Richardson scored five points in a 7-0 run to end the third quarter and the Hornets were ahead to stay.
